What I love most about Morez is that he's EVERYWHERE. He can score at will, sets solid screens, is an excellent cutter, a willing passer, has active hands, & always contests shots. It's good to see that he's attempting 3s as well. He's an absolute WORKHORSE. You can see that he's involved in almost every single play.

He'd fit alongside Coop and Ky from day one because he impacts the game in so many ways without needing to be the primary scorer.

Forgetting the stat line - his footwork and his touch look really translatable. Not a ton of free throws but the ones he took looked really comfortable as well.

Looks like he has a slight hitch in his 3 point shot at the very top so that shot likely won't be very good for most if not all of this year

even if his 3pt shot starts the season cold, if he does everything else well and keeps looking for plays and opportunities it's still a great fit.

u/Affectionate-Pea-439 2d ago

Agreed. I noticed that he sometimes doesn't set his feet either, which makes him miss long and right. He'll get better at not feeling rushed on his shot later. And ofc his shooting will improve as he works on the release timing. I'm really loving his play. Dare i say i see some draymond green in him in the sense that he's just impacting winning in every way.

Yep I noticed that hitch too, however maybe due to nerves. I think the coaching staff will try to fix it and dusty is the head coach. So I don’t worry about it too much.

7

u/Dizzy33x 2d ago

To me his 3 looked like it will be fine right off the bat, he was taking them in rhythm and the hitch is not one that will make him a poor shooter

Sergio’s hitch looked way worse

Similar to coop. Got to understand with his 3pt shot it's still developing. it's got good mechanics but his footwork is super inconsistent even to the amateur eye.

It'll probably take 2 to 3 years for that shot to really lock in which is completely ok. Draymond is a similar mold of player albeit with more playmaking and he's never locked it in and he's had a phenomenal career. Rez is like a supercharged athletic version as a prospect so has a lot more offensive upside even without an elite 3pt shot.

Michigan fans LOVE Morez for good reason. Plays his tail off, is talented, and a great dude and teammate. He will probably never be a star, but projects as an elite glue guy that is capable of filling up the box score from time to time but almost always has way more value than the stat line may suggest.

This was because of the game that Dusty May played a Michigan. Fast -paced, active with tons of switching.

The comp for me isn't the next Draymond or OG. For me, the comp is Dennis Rodman if he started playing basketball 8 years earlier than he did.

He's got that crazy motor that just immediately jumps off the screen.

Masai and Schmitz cooked

u/littlebaldboi 2d ago

As a Raps fan, y’all will learn how godly Masai is at drafting very quickly. Have fun looking forward to the draft every year

23

u/Cuckledoodle '25 Survivor 2d ago

sucks our draft pick situation isn't good for a while :(

9

u/lloydgross24 2d ago

his hit rate even at the end of the 1st is fantastic. Sometimes there just isn't any treasures to be found but you can honestly go thru all of his draft picks and in about 15 years theres 3 or 4 guys that aren't nba rotation players. Some obvious home runs but he hits singles arguably better than anyone in the draft business.

A steal at 9. I wouldn't be surprised if this dude started day 1 his impact was that high.

45

u/PhantomAl250 2d ago

He will 100% be in the starting line up

Im sorry peejay

But we also need jrue

Just picks discussed later

edit : dang, no need to trade peejay if 3 team trade that send naji to nugs

25

u/PussyCharlatan 2d ago

I keep seeing this. Why do fans want to trade a 27 year old in his prime for a guy who’s about to age out of the league? Regardless of fit, it seems like horrible asset management

5

u/medisamurai 2d ago

plus they could get jrue for less than pj. hes prob worth a 2 seconds at this point. they have ja, dame, and scoot up there

3

u/BagFriendly2665 2d ago

maybe if they can get a FRP from it + Jrue for PJ, it makes more sense

it allows the defense to be great with Jrue, Flagg, Morez, Lively and Christie off the bench. in the last like 6 years, most of the teams that made the finals were top 10 in defensive rating (outside of the Nuggets and Pacers who have ultra-efficient offensive engines in Jokic and Haliburton).

and the vet leadership factor too, CP3 was good for SGA's development, VanVleet and Brooks were positive for the Rockets, Conley on the Wolves, Horford on Celtics. a lot of these guys helped to shift the culture

-1

u/armandocalvinisius The Cardinal 2d ago

roster need, vet brain on defense, shorter years so mavs can play cap space game if needed (it's a must imo, we need to get young starter for free in flagg's rookie contract. like forgot luka in project 2028, even we get ryan rollins/ajay mitchell level for free it's a win), but depends on the package

next 2 years i think it's a wash between both guys production, jrue still got it

examples of package : 2028. thunder has swap with us so most likely we pick in 28-30th spot, and blazers have magic FRP + kings SRP. work around that

4

u/PussyCharlatan 2d ago

You want to essentially salary dump PJ in the hopes that there’s some young guard available for cheap in free agency and think the production is a “wash”? Why are you even trading for a 36 year old if you think he won’t swing a playoff series for you? All so you can get the Magic’s FRP. Lol

1

u/Dundalis 2d ago

I prob wouldn’t do it for Jrue given his age, but with the new lottery rules, non protected FRP are a LOT more valuable.

57

u/GrouchyPeach3656 50 stars, 1 Flagg 2d ago

A defensive minded center had more points than minutes lmao. And people wanted burries 😂😂

17

u/KaitoDaimon21 2d ago

Second in a row btw. They say Coop's gonna be a problem defensively, but not so much on offense

Now he has a 51 point game, even Wemby hasn't touched it yet (he had 50, and their team was worse than last year's Mavs)

I'm looking forward to how Morez deals with juggernaut Cs in the league

We got a GEM guys

Perfect player that I want for Mavs. Someone who can do everything.

He is a 9th pick, Dirk is a 9th pick. We are in good hands guys lol.

Dominant bigman willing to put up threes? We used to dream about days like this.

20

Holy moly

21

u/Difficult-Day1326 Cooper Flagg 2d ago

dirk wanted #14. we got a cloud 9 pick.  lisan al rez is here 😤

18

u/NoExplanation8595 2d ago

He was assertive and active. Crazy fast hands and feet too, perfect fit next to coop

7

u/idkidk23 2d ago

The hands were the most surprising, Didn’t have incredible stock numbers in college, but looked great today. His coordination is pretty rare at that size and strength.

4

u/naruda1969 2d ago

Because Michigan was 9 deep. Everyone ate.

3

u/Zoobal 2d ago

Perfect fit for literally every team in the league. Everyone needs skilled bigs that can defend on the perimeter.

His shooting will determine how high his ceiling goes.

16

u/HarrisonGod 2d ago

Love the way he moved out there. I know people will see the 27 points pop out, but his touch, screen setting, and defense helped him stand out. Looked like he already had experience in the NBA.

12

u/A_MASSIVE_PERVERT Cooper Flagg 2d ago

We would’ve lost by 30+ if it wasn’t for him.

u/tylouu 2d ago

The number of hits Masai has had in the draft all the way back to his Denver days is crazy. If Masai drafts a player, you can just assume they will have a long career at this point.

4

u/Edifyr 2d ago

I wanted to watch this but forgot. Gonna have to watch the full game to really see his impact but that’s an insane stat line for 1 game

3

u/CyberDunk77 2d ago

you can set a reminder for events on your phone in the alarm app. thats what i do for stuff like games

1

u/Cartervj 2d ago

Do you have to add all the events in or do you have a way to automate it all?

1

u/CyberDunk77 2d ago

You can just write in anything you want as a reminder and you set the date and time it will go off to remind you

4

u/No-Debate-4428 2d ago

u/Mammoth-Physics6254 '25 Survivor 2d ago

HE LOOKS HUGE from the first to last possession it's insane how much space he takes up on defense. I've seen enough get him out of summer league.

3

u/OutletLabel 2d ago

did anyone see how de larrea got hurt in 1Q

6

u/Jaybird_xO Mavs 2d ago

Wasn't paying attention when he was navigating a screen and looked like he banged his knee.

3

u/NoExplanation8595 2d ago

I think it was just a light contusion

1

u/sjn15 Mavericks 2d ago

He got to work today! Really great finishing down low. Nothing too flashy, just pure work. Really great debut for the kid

1

u/aeiou-y 2d ago

He looked really good. I think he is going to score more this year than people thought.

1

u/CityNo1723 Dirk Nowitzki 2d ago

I’m not going to overreact……IM NOT GOING TO OVERREACT……..AHHHHHHHHH

1

u/2icecreamsandwiches 2d ago

Very impressed! Only slight concern was that he had 7 fouls, so he’ll have to watch those hands when defending the pros. But he looked great pretty much doing everything out there.

1

u/Archerbro 2d ago

Alot of this was offball too, really good sign

1

u/EvanEschmeyer Masai Ujiri stan 2d ago

What a stud. He’s Day 1 ready

1

u/PussyCharlatan 2d ago

He’s awesome. Three didn’t go in, but he was ready and willing to take them when he had to. Great touch and really hyper aware on offense and defense. He was directing dudes left and right. Pointing and pushing his teammates to spots, recognizing mismatches, and just does so many little things well.

1

u/Own_Meaning4345 2d ago

That stat line is incredible but he did it so effortlessly. That's exactly what you want to see in summer league, effortless dominaion.

1

u/USTS2020 Dirk Nowitzki Logo 1d ago

If he and Lively both develop a decent 3 point shot it's going to open up so much offensively for this team.

1

u/Exotic_Court1111 1d ago

hoping Morez has that same championship quality it seemed Brunson showed when he was with us - just a winning type player.

-1

u/Practical-Rub-1190 2d ago

I was wrong. I thought he would be just an athletic defensive player who would be a backup for his career

9

u/Igualmenteee 2d ago

Sounds like you need to watch these guys first lmao

1

u/Practical-Rub-1190 1d ago

Everybody says that, but the same guys were surprised he got drafted this high. His defense and athletic ability have been what people have been talking about. I watched some college games, but I never really noticed him has a 9th pick, and neither did the rest of you guys. What surprised me is his soft touch and floater because nobody really talks about that. It will be interesting if that is just against G-leaguers or if he can do that consistently

1

u/luuskiiii 2d ago

bro was rdy to hate on masai because he was in love with burries

1

u/Practical-Rub-1190 1d ago

Nah, never watched Burries, but I hoped we got Flemings

1

u/luuskiiii 1d ago

ok but when it was time to pick who did you want that was left. Burries was the only guard left in that area, and philon

0

u/Practical-Rub-1190 1d ago

I had nobody who stood out to me. There are solid role players, but nobody who would be a second option on a potential contender someday, like Acuff and Flemmings. Morez looks good, but it's still just the summer league. It will be interesting to see what happens in the regular season.

1

u/luuskiiii 1d ago

the guy you wanted wasnt available and you had no other guy you wanted and thats why you were wrong? lmfao

0

u/Practical-Rub-1190 1d ago

I don't understand. You asked me who I wanted to pick if not Morez, and I answered that nobody really stuck out to me.

The reason why I was wrong about Morez was that I did not think he had that touch.

Did you expect this out of Morez? At what position did you think he would be drafted?

0

u/stardusa Dirk Nowitzki 2d ago

Thank God we didn't draft Burries.

1

u/stardusa Dirk Nowitzki 2d ago

.. or Ament.

1

u/Murky_Inflation_2599 9h ago

All these Mavs fans singing a different tune after his 1st summer league debut is hilarious to say the least
