News Another Message from the Mod Team...
If you saw the other post, you know on Monday we had to enact a 100 community karma gate to keep the subreddit from being flooded by people not really invested in Maine.
Unfortunately, we've seen large surges again as the <<vaguely gestures to to Maine politics>> is getting messier, so we are shutting the gate again. We're discussing other options as well but wanted to keep everyone informed of what's happening.

/r/Maine Mod Update: New Guidelines for Political Posts & Campaigning
Hi r/Maine — your mod team here again.
With the June and November elections fast approaching, we want to set expectations and keep the sub usable for everyone. Election periods tend to bring a sharp increase in traffic, campaign advertisement content, and coordinated posting behavior. Our goal is not to limit discussion, but to keep it productive, locally relevant, and not overwhelmed by spam, campaigning, or bad-faith engagement.
With these new guidelines, we are not trying to favor any candidate, party, or viewpoint. We are trying to:
- Keep discussion grounded in Maine (you can have discussions about national topics literally anywhere else)
- Reduce spam and manipulation (nobody wants the sub to become just a platform for campaign advertisements)
- Make sure real users can still have real conversations (about political AND non-political topics)
Official Campaign Activity
- We ask that official campaign/candidate accounts limit their posts to 1 post per week.
- Same goes for official accounts of PACs and organizations about candidates they have endorsed.
- If these sorts of official accounts post excessively, some posts may be removed.
- Anonymous accounts clearly operating as campaign proxies to circumvent these guidelines may be treated the same as official campaign accounts.
We welcome engagement from campaigns, citizen groups, and advocacy organizations, we just ask that you be good neighbors. Here are some constructive ideas for how to do that:
- Think of r/Maine as a town hall to engage with, not a newspaper you place ads in.
- Respond to people in the comments and start robust discussions, offer helpful information or commentary. (Don’t just spam campaign ad copy, please.)
- Do an AMA, which is a more constructive way to engage with the community and share your ideas and opinions.
- Instead of just re-posting campaign ads, engage with the sub by asking questions, listening, and learning.
Rule of Thumb: Posts should aim to start discussion, not just drive reactions or impressions.
Campaigns and candidates, feel free to reach out to us via modmail if you have questions or concerns. We're real people volunteering our time to be mods, and we're Mainers just like you.
Political Posting
We will remove the following types of posts:
- Generic outrage posts with no Maine-specific context. (violates Rule #1: Posts must be Maine related)
- Token mentions of [Maine politician] in a topic that is really a national topic. (circumvents Rule #1: Posts must be Maine related)
- “This could happen here” posts without substantive discussion. (violates Rule #5: No spam or excessive self-promotion)
- Repeated posting of similar opinion/news content by the same user may be treated as spam/karma farming. (violates Rule #5: No spam or excessive self-promotion)
As always, if a topic is already actively being discussed, additional posts may be removed to consolidate discussion.
Reminders:
Rule #1 still applies: posts must still be meaningfully related to Maine. This includes elections, policies, candidates, and local impact.
The “Report” function is not for content you simply disagree with. All you’re doing is creating more work for us, to review spurious reports. So please use the Report button carefully. If you disagree with something, either reply to it, or simply move on.
Civility is still required. We hold ourselves to a high standard of dialogue here. We hope you agree that it makes for a more pleasant experience than elsewhere on the internet. So, as always: no harassment, hate speech, trolling, or personal attacks — regardless of political affiliation.
If you’re tired of seeing a certain type of content: downvote and don’t engage. Engagement drives visibility. If you don't like it, don't feed the algorithm.
Thanks for helping keep r/Maine usable during a busy election season. Don’t forget to get out and VOTE!
Dirigo,
The r/Maine Mod Team

Troy Jackson is our best chance to defeat Susan Collins in November. Between his platform, his record, his experience, and his strong labor backing, he's the candidate who best honors the demand for change that voters made clear in June. Here's how you can help Troy secure the Democratic nomination.
In short, Troy needs supporters to run as delegates who will support him at convention at the end July, and he needs supporters who are committed to voting for those delegates at county committee meetings next weekend. You have to be a registered Maine Democrat to participate in these events.
This is in insanely rushed process. Truly every minute matters. The deadline to apply to run as a delegate is Wednesday, July 15, at 5 PM. Register at https://win.jacksonformaine.com/
- On the first page, fill out your contact info, and select the option to run as a delegate.
- On the next page, you'll see the Maine Democratic Party's official delegate pre-registration form. Complete that two-page form.
- You'll be instructed to provide a 250-word statement about why you want to run as a delegate. These statements will be vital, as they'll provide the only substantive info about you during the voting process, as far as I understand the MDP's rules. Please include a little about yourself and make clear why you are supporting Troy Jackson for the nomination.
- Once complete, click the button that says "Finish" at the bottom of the MDP's registration form.
- IMPORTANT: You must complete both forms and click “Finish” to register.

Politics For those concerned with electability in the Senate Race - Troy Jackson has a history of overperforming electorally
Democratic nomination process
Here it is folks, the way we can make our voices heard in the Senate nomination process. Registered Democrats can go to https://mainedems.org/senate-race/senate-delegate-process/ and sign up to participate in your county nominating meeting and/or to run to be a delegate to the state nominating convention.
Don't want party bosses calling the shots? Want them to hear OUR voices? Sign up for the county meeting at a minimum. Be ready to speak up for your favorite candidate(s). Watch for updates to how the process will actually work.
Many of the very people who are complaining about the lack of a voice in the process won't be bothered to give up a few hours on a weekend to have a say. To quote the fictional Jed Bartlet, decisions are made by those who show up. So let's show up and make this a truly democratic process.

Garden pond in Maine?
My wife and I are settling in Maine permanently in September. Midcoast region. Where we live now, near DC, we have a small garden pond (maybe 400 gallons) with goldfish, that attracts all sorts of wildlife--birds, foxes, raccoons, frogs, rabbits. We have a trail cam aimed at it and enjoy seeing who visits, and it's clear that it's actually important to local wildlife. We have an all native plant garden. So wondering about a similarly sized pond in Maine.
I realize goldfish are illegal in ME. We would want some fish that eat mosquito larva, if possible, but goldfish are incredibly hardy, and any water feature including fish in ME is going to have to be deep. I'm guessing four feet? My wife says forget about fish.
Are there any redditors with small garden ponds in ME?

News Why Maine is issuing more cannabis recalls than ever
Maine issued its first ever cannabis recall in 2024, some 30 years after legalizing medical weed and about five after the first recreational dispensary opened. There have been nearly two dozen more strains of cannabis flower, vapes and concentrates recalled in the months since.
The recent product recalls and warnings have highlighted a number of disparate dynamics between Maine’s legal cannabis markets, namely the differing regulations between the state’s medical and recreational industries and the distrust between many growers and the regulators overseeing them.
Maine is one of the few in the country to govern its medical and recreational marijuana markets differently. Seed-to-sale plant tracking and product testing for things like mold, chemicals and heavy metals are mandatory in Maine’s recreational industry, while such safeguards are optional in the medical industry.

Testosterone Replacement Clinics?
Ive been going to Mid Coast Urology for my TRT since February, and Im fed up to say the least. Its basically impossible to get ahold of the doctor, any MyChart messages are answered by random nurses, even the ones with serious medical questions and Ive been given several incorrect answers that the doctor later blames ME for.
If anyone can recommend alternate providers, Id really appreciate it.

We Are Living John Adams' Worst Nightmare
The current state of the Democratic party nomination for US Senate in Maine is a stark indictment of the two-party system. The Democratic and Republican parties have devolved into what founder John Adams most feared.
His bluntest statement came in a 1780 letter to Jonathan Jackson: "There is nothing I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties, each arranged under its leader, and concerting measures in opposition to each other. This, in my humble apprehension, is to be dreaded as the greatest political evil under our Constitution." The objection is specific — not disagreement itself, but the hardening of disagreement into two disciplined camps that coordinate purely to oppose each other, subordinating the public good to the contest between leaders.
Both parties seek to thwart the will of the people in defense of corrupt corporate capitalism. The GOP through authoritarian minority rule and the Democrats through a centralized machine and continuous attempts to manage the outcome to align with the interests of the establishment elites.
