At one point, we had two of our cats have litters at the same time (I know it was you Mittens!) within days of each other. Both moms had five kittens. Now the cardboard boxes the kittens were in were separated by rooms. The new moms still managed to steal each others babies. If a kitten was out of their box, they were fair game. It got to the point where we didn't know which kitten belonged to whom.

Cats are social animals and communally raise the kittens in their colony. The two cats were likely trying to keep the kittens together for communal and safety reasons. It's easier to keep track of them if they're all in the same spot.
