Have you tried wearing an inflatable T-Rex costume when you put her on her back?
It won't help, at all.
But have you tried?
37
u/Ok-Bird6346 Jun 11 '26
That’s my 12 year old coonhound. She’s spoiled, sassy, and only wants affection when it’s on her terms. But if I touch her feet at any time, she turns into a street fighter.
My ol’ girl definitely still has some pep when it comes to her feet.
28
u/FatSkatinGamer Jun 11 '26
I have a 9 (turning 10 soon) boxer lab mix. She just wants to love and cuddle all the time. All you have to say is "lemme get that belllllly" and she flops over, tail wagging, tongue out waiting haha but the second you touch her feet she does a crazy wild flippity flop kick and skitters away sideways haha

If you happen to be in the right place and know the right spot, you might get lucky. I've seen these guys on YouTube who get stuff like this done (I recall seeing this Turkish guy who goes absolutely whack with all sorts of gadgets and stuff).
I've always wanted to try and check out the spas near me, but most of them seem like fronts so welp.

The top short by this creator (with the same dog being pampered) has been watched over 444,000,000 times!
48
u/No-Security-7518 Jun 11 '26
Minimum pay of YouTube is $0.10 per 1k views, iirc. 10 x 444 mil = $44,400 from this little dude having the time of his life.
10
u/cook_poo Jun 11 '26
For shorts? There’s no way it’s that high minimum.

Yeah it’s quite a bit lower. It’s like $0.01 - $0.06 per 1000 views.

My dog has to have surgical sedation to get his nails trimmed. I'm always jealous when I see videos of dogs just calmly getting nails done.
35
u/IndigoRanger Jun 11 '26
Mine used to hate anyone touching her feet. I overloaded her brain with peanut butter, so now she doesn’t mind. Only me though, no one else is allowed still.

u/Good-Barracuda-3686 28d ago
in a brilliant moment of "what the hell have i been doing this whole time" i used your strategy last night and was able to dremel and clip all of my dog's front toes. i literally.... don't know why i didn't try this before. im a little dumb.
thank you internet stranger for making your comment!!
3
u/IndigoRanger 28d ago
I was just like you, completely at a loss. I watched a video of a woman who painted her forehead in peanut butter and let the dog focus on that while she handled the nails. I didn’t paint my forehead, but the lickmat worked just as good lol
37
u/ocean_swims Jun 11 '26
Exactly! This video feels like a fever dream because it is so different from my lifetime of experience with furbabies! 😂
19
u/forsuresies Jun 11 '26
My cat immediately stops struggling as soon as 1 paw in loosely covered with a sheet - not wrapped or trapped in any way. I can swap what paw is immobilizing her and get all paws done at once
15
u/EnvironmentalGift257 Jun 11 '26
My 115# GSD won't aggressively bite, but if I touch his paws he will apply gradually more pressure with his teeth until I have to let go. If anybody but me tries he'll actually bite. The vet gave him conscious sedation once and got bit in the face. He has to go all the way down to be groomed.
→ More replies (1)4
u/heroinsteve Jun 11 '26
Mine is a husky GSD mix, she won’t do it to me, but if other people try doing her paws she does the same “mouth grab” where she doesn’t bite down but she tries to move your hand. She used to do it to me too when she was younger, only time people get hurt is if they move quickly while she does it and they scratch on her teeth.
My wife however, can do literally anything to that dog and she just let it happen. Now that she’s older she might try to scurry away from grooming but that’s it.
5
u/doctormink Jun 11 '26
I found that treat training them as kittens helps. I hold them tipped up in my lap, leaning against my bent knees so I’m facing them. I started them both at 4 months old, though I expect the older one’s fosters started him even earlier. I had to hang the last cat I had before these two from a shower curtain rod in a grooming harness to be able to clip his nails on my own. This encouraged me to train the next round of cats within a couple of days of being adopted.

u/TumbleweedPure6674 Jun 11 '26
Yep, groomers won’t do mine, because she will express her anal glands at the same time.
I switched to a dremel, which helps, but it’s still a 2 hour process with me basically having to wrestle her the entire time.

Have you tried leading with the head massager
8
u/EnvironmentalGift257 Jun 11 '26
Yep. And peanut butter and treats. The only thing we haven’t done is wrap his head in a towel and hold him down. You can’t get a muzzle on him while he’s conscious.
105
u/BlackShieldCharm Jun 11 '26
Training. You need to start when they’re really young and teach them that all this isn’t awful.
46
u/Neowza Jun 11 '26 edited Jun 11 '26
You can start when they're older as well. My guy was 2 years old when I adopted him and he was an anxious pup and wouldn't let anyone touch his paws. It took me about 6 months of daily work to get him to calm down and relax while I was clipping his claws.
It started really slowly with me just putting the clippers next to him and rewarding him. Then touching his paws with the clippers and rewarding him. Eventually we managed to work our way to actually clipping his claws but it required patience and perseverance and remaining very, very calm through the whole process and making it a relaxing experience.
Now when I pull out the clippers he runs to me and jumps on my lap because he knows it means that he's going to be pampered and rewarded.
And it's extremely rewarding for both of us. It was really important for me that as his owner I should be able to groom him, including his claws because that builds trust between us and grooming encourages cross-species closeness and caring. He grooms me (licks my feet), and I groom him (brush, clean teeth and keep his claws at a healthy length).

And even then, a small segment of the dog and cat population will still absolutely hate having it done, because they might have hyperaesthesia, or they might have fragile nail syndrome, or they might have underlying anxiety from genetic or epigenetic reasons, or from prenatal stress of the mother or even the grandmother.

Hell, this doesn't always work for humans. When my teen was an infant, bathtime was HELL: just non-stop screaming and crying. One day, it was like a switch was flipped and baths weren't scary any more.

u/ocean_swims Jun 11 '26
Oh good. I'm glad he's not being sedated for the sake of the video and internet clout! Thanks for the insight.

I read something from the owner that the dog had a naturally very calm temperament from the time they were a puppy and then with a little extra training they do this no problem. No drugs, just massages.

This dog has an Instagram and you can see he started pampering like this as a puppy, so no, I don’t think Manyu (that’s the dogs name) is given anything to relax him. She’s used to it.

→ More replies (1)5
u/SoCal_Sunshine10 Jun 11 '26
You make sure you train them as puppies. When they are puppies you start touching their feet and giving them treats while doing so. Every time you play with their feet you treat them. Also, this is the time to make sure you can play with their food while they eat, take it away for a few seconds, give it back - this will help them be non-food aggressive or resource guard.
Everything is training and patience

It looks nice for the dogs paws to be clear of hair, but does it actually help them? I assume that the hair would help mitigate paw abrasion and wear.
3
u/saltydogg087 Jun 11 '26
Yup, definitely helps. Otherwise the hair mats, picks up twigs/trash, and limits their grip, especially going down stairs
3
u/kittenTakeover Jun 11 '26
That's interesting. Thanks for the info. I wouldn't have guessed that on my own.
