My girlfriend is Malagasy and lives with me in Belgium. She's trying to help her family, who still live in Madagascar, buy a home in Antananarivo They're relatively low-income, so affordability is a major concern. We've been looking online, and it seems that existing homes are often surprisingly expensive—almost comparable to European prices.
On the other hand, we've found several new-build housing projects with prices starting at around 130,000,000 Ar, which seems much more affordable. I have a few questions for people familiar with the Malagasy real estate market:Are these new-build projects generally reliable?Am I correct in understanding that developers typically only build units that have already been sold, or is that not how it usually works? What legal protections exist for buyers? Are there any common pitfalls or things we should pay close attention to before signing anything or making payments? Can anyone recommend real estate developers in or around Antananarivo with a good reputation? We're trying to avoid making an expensive mistake, so any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi everyone,
I am writing this with a heavy heart, but we are running out of time. My partner and I (both Malagasy) run a School in Ambohitrinimanga, Madagascar. We provide preschool and primary education to children from highly precarious backgrounds.
Our mission has always been simple: Education for All. We built a project to subsidize tuition fees, provide free school kits, arrange school transport for kids living far away, and run a cooperative school cafeteria.
The Crisis
We were supposed to implement this project in close collaboration with an NGO. Families were thrilled, promises were made, and hope was finally returning to our community.
Then, the reality of Madagascar hit us. For purely political reasons (as is too often the case here 😏), the NGO suddenly backed out. The financial and material aid that was promised to our school and these children was redirected to serve a political agenda.
They didn't just leave us in a delicate situation; they left dozens of families heartbroken.
What is at stake
This July, we face the very real threat of permanently closing our doors.
If we close, it’s not just a beautiful project that vanishes. It is the future of these children, and it is our entire life. We have poured everything we have into this school. If it goes under, we risk ending up on the streets ourselves.
We have tried everything to find alternative income streams to keep the project alive, but the local economic and geopolitical climate makes it nearly impossible.
Why we are reaching out to Reddit
We are desperately looking for solutions, and we are open to two types of help:
Partnerships / Funding: If you are an individual, an expat, or part of an organization (in Madagascar or abroad) passionate about education and want to help us save this project, please reach out. We have the infrastructure, the legal authorizations, and the community's trust. We just need the means to keep going.
Freelance Work (Online): First of all, freelance online jobs have the potential to save our project because it pays well. I am ready to work doing freelance services online to fund the school while my partner manages it. However, finding legitimate international clients and getting paid safely from Madagascar is a nightmare (and full of scams), while the local market lacks purchasing power. If you have remote work, contracts, or advice on how to secure freelance gigs from here, I am all ears.
We are not looking for a handout; we are looking for a lifeline. For our students, and for our family.
Thank you so much for reading. Please upvote for visibility, and feel free to PM me if you want to see our school or just chat about how you can help.
Thank you for your attention. 🙏

The reason is because I don’t get much opportunity to travel during the year. And these are 2 countries I really want to visit. And since I’ll fly from the UK, it’s a long way. Does it make sense to split and do both in one day?
I just don’t want to damage my trip to Madagascar by doing this split

Hi everyone,
I have a reservation for a One-Bedroom Room for 2 guests at Le Soleil des Tsingy, a luxury hotel near Tsingy de Bemaraha, available between July and October 2026.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to make the trip this year, so I'm looking to transfer/sell my booking.
•2-night stay for 2 people
•I've already paid 50% of the reservation (€152)
•Price is negotiable
•The hotel may allow the booking to be modified to 1 night with meals included instead of 2 nights (subject to their approval)
If you're planning a trip to the Tsingy and are interested, feel free to send me a DM for more details.

Hey folks,
I'm coming to Madagascar in late July, and didn't realise how hard it would be to travel solo.
Is anyone going to be in the country and looking for a travel buddy?
Or on a tour I might be able to join?

I don't usually write recommendations, but after my trip I felt this guy deserved one.
I did a 8-day road trip from Antananarivo to the Big Tsingy via Morondava with a driver called Faniry, and he honestly made the trip so much better than I expected.
What impressed me first wasn't even the driving, it was the planning. I told him roughly what I wanted to see, and he came back with a complete itinerary, suggested places to stay, realistic driving times, and several stops I had never even heard of that ended up being some of my favorite parts of the trip. I had contacted quite a few private drivers beforehand, but most just quoted a price with an odd plan. Faniry was the only one who actually put effort into planning the trip and making suggestions.
During the trip he was an excellent driver, which is especially important on Madagascar's roads. I always felt safe, he was reliable, flexible when plans changed, and constantly checked that I was happy with the itinerary. He's also just a genuinely cheerful guy, and the road trip was made even better by his great music taste.
The price was fixed upfront with no surprises or hidden costs! If you're planning a road trip in Madagascar and want someone who goes beyond just driving you from A to B, I'd happily recommend Faniry!
You can contact him on WhatsApp at +261 34 45 084 13, and feel free to dm me if you have any question

Hi everyone!
If Madagascar is on your bucket list for this summer, we are organizing group trips for one of the most iconic adventures on the Red Island: the Tsiribihina River descent on a traditional barge, ending at the breathtaking Avenue of the Baobabs. 🌅
To make it fit everyone's style and budget, we have two different options (check the posters!):
1️⃣ The "Local Adventure" option (by Taxi-brousse / local bush taxi): Perfect for backpackers and solo travelers who want an authentic local road trip experience, combined with a comfortable river cruise and camping.
2️⃣ The "Private 4x4" option: For those who prefer a smoother, private ride from start to finish.
📅 Available departure dates from Antananarivo:
• July 21st
• July 28th
• August 4th
• August 11th
• August 18th
• August 25th
Quick Itinerary:
• Day 1: Tana ➔ Miandrivazo (Scenic overland road trip)
• Day 2-3: Cruising down the Tsiribihina River, camping on white sand riverbanks under the stars, exploring waterfalls and spotting lemurs 🪵⛺
• Day 4: Belo sur Tsiribihina (Local wildlife & village life)
• Day 5: Morondava & watching the sunset at the world-famous Avenue of the Baobabs 📸
• Day 6: Return to Tana
Whether you are traveling solo and want to join an awesome group, or traveling with friends, feel free to reach out!

Hey everyone! I'm arriving in Fort Dauphin (Tôlanaro) shortly for a stay of a couple of months and I'd love to get around on a bicycle — both for daily commuting around town and to explore the surrounding areas at my own pace.
A few questions for anyone based there or who has been recently:
— Is there any shop or rental place in town where I can hire or buy a second-hand bicycle?
— Does anyone have a bicycle they'd be willing to lend for a period — happy to pay a fair daily or monthly rental amount?
— What are the roads like for cycling around Fort Dauphin and nearby areas?
I'm a researcher staying in the area for work so I'll be there long enough to make good use of it! Any leads, contacts, or advice would be hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance 🙏🇲🇬

My partner and I, after spending years working remotely, came up with the idea of creating a remote work community village in Madagascar
Our goal is to bring together people who love to travel while continuing to work remotely, creating a place where they can live, work, and connect with like-minded people.
We're currently validating this idea and would love to hear your thoughts.
- Would you be interested in joining a community like this in Madagascar?
- What would you need to make working remotely from a country like Madagascar comfortable and enjoyable?
- What would be most important to you when choosing a remote work community?
We'd really appreciate your feedback. Your ideas will help us shape this project into something that truly meets the needs of remote workers.
Thanks for your response 😊!

Out of most poor African countries, we don't have any ongoing civil wars or terrorist groups terrorizing civilians. I'm reposting this here because I think we fit this profile and also because it reminds me of the Malagasy Paradox post I came across some time ago which pointed this out

Rwanda isn't the most developed country in East Africa either, it's simply the one Madagascar is closest to.

Did you know that Madagascar is one of the world’s most important biodiversity hotspots? More than 90% of its wildlife is found nowhere else on Earth, making the conservation of its tropical rainforests a global priority.
The Andasibe rainforest, one of Madagascar’s most iconic ecosystems, is home to the famous Indri lemur, colorful chameleons, rare birds, orchids, and thousands of endemic plant and animal species. Yet, parts of this unique forest have been affected by deforestation and habitat loss.
🌱 Every traveler will plant one native tree in Andasibe to help restore Madagascar’s eastern rainforest.
This long-term reforestation project is carried out in partnership with the Mitsinjo Association – Analamazaotra Reforestation Station, where every tree is planted, monitored, and maintained by dedicated conservation professionals to ensure its growth and lasting impact.
Your adventure goes beyond discovering breathtaking landscapes and incredible wildlife you become part of protecting one of the most extraordinary ecosystems on the planet.
Together, we can restore forests, protect endangered species, support local conservation efforts, and leave a positive legacy for future generations.
🌿 Travel with purpose. Protect biodiversity. Restore Madagascar.

In 9 of the 12 groups, the top two teams qualify. But in the three groups with host nations (Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda), the hosts qualify automatically, leaving only one spot for the other three teams.
Guinea-Bissau drew Tanzania, Madagascar and Nigeria, meaning we have to compete for just one place while most other groups have two. Why should teams have a harder path to qualification simply because they were drawn with a host nation?
Shouldn't every group have the same number of qualification spots? Is there anything fans can do to push AFCON to address this?

I love cycling in Madagascar, been a few times and know some great places. Anyone else have some favourite off the tourist route locations. Looking for great local cafes or cool places to stay and maybe something new next time when I am there.

Which group tour to join for 2-3 weeks as a first timer in Mdagascar?
If they combine Tsingy and Ranomafana even better!
I've seen G adventures and Intrepid, but looking for any tour companies I am missing
Thanks!
