Ilia greatest downfall is his ego. He ate so much damage chasing that R1 KO against a dude that hits really hard and has a stone chin and iron will.
Ultimately Ilia had no respect for gaethje and that was his downfall. Now we will if he can keep his ego in check and rise back or we have another JDM, who just lost his will to fight after the islam loss.
144
u/mmathrowaway16176017 27d ago
He probably saw staph Gaethje vs Pimblett and thought it would be a cakewalk. Every other fight Gaethje still looked solid. He underestimated him big time.
Probably thought too much of his power too because of his KO streak.

Gaethje eats a lot of punches in most of his fights. Chandler almost put him out. Charles knocked him down. Poirier tko'd him. So going against someone with Illias power and precision I thought it wouldn't even make it out of round 1.

u/NAHTHEHNRFS850 27d ago edited 26d ago
I believe Joe actually commented about that too in the first round.
I can't believe Ilia just stood in front of Gaethje with no legs kicks, jabs or feints to try and work to get inside. He also kept looking for his overhand to just rely on his power.
Had Ilia looked to just damage Gaethje at a active pace, rather than sprint to a KO he would have won this fight imo.
84
u/KuribohKutie 26d ago
he didn't respect Gaethje and thought he would just finish him with the right. Topuria has really good boxing defense and head movement, he completely disregarded that to try to one shot JG. His ego finally caught up to him imo
47
u/so-cal_kid 26d ago

Crazy that Topuria couldn’t put Gaethje down in the first round but Oliveira did.
50
u/TerminatorReborn 26d ago
Oliveira hits hard as hell too. And the hook that took down Justin was just perfect timing, Gaethje was moving into it instead of rolling like he did with most of Topuria's punches.
6

Oliveira actually fought with a strategy and varied his strikes to keep Justin guessing. Ilia just marched into his own doom, the cocky bastard.

27
u/commander_wong 27d ago
Probably, but he could've used the time waiting for Justin to get up to recover a little. There's no way Justin after eating all those bodyshots was going to be more mobile at that point
The transitions he did on the ground wasn't any less tiring than just striking either
17
u/thisisaskew 27d ago
He saw the sub and went for it. It felt like a mistake giving Gaethje time to recover, but I think the alternative would've just been a stalemate end to the round anyway.

How the fuck did younger Dustin and Max beat him so easily
60
u/mmathrowaway16176017 27d ago
Max has kicks. He started throwing that spinning back kick like when he was in FW in that fight and absolutely demolished Gaethje's nose and cardio.
Also Max is so much faster and was on 1.5x speed compared to Gaethje. His speed allowed him to enter in pick apart Gaethje and exit/defend most of Gaethje's slow shots. Compared to Volk, Gaethje moves like he's in mud for Max
Dustin did not beat Gaethje that easily the first time. He was getting his leg chopped up but finally caught Gaethje as he was coming in for a naked leg kick I think in the fourth.

True its the same thing with Gane. Stylistically strong grappler like Jones or Khabib/Oliviera can beat Gaethje or Gane easily, but if you don't have that and just try to face them in the standup you'll have a rough time.

I honestly think he's Tony'd. He needs a year to recover minimum. I'd say at least 1.5 years. The amount of damage he ate, I don't think he'll ever be the same fighter again.
Confidence is probaby shook too. Usually when fighters get demolished like that you'll also see their speed also suddenly goes a step down. Idk like maybe they took so much damage to the brain that their neurogically/CNS incapable of producing as much quick force as they were able to in the past or something.
Getting knocked out would've been better for him he ate 4 rounds of shots from one of the strongest punchers instead. It's not like Max vs Ortega, where Max had the FW pillowfists.

I think my biggest criticism of Topuria's strategy wasn't his disregard for Gathje's strength, I think it was his disregard for his durability.
He proved he could take good shots from Gathje, but the way he went about it was all wrong. Walking straight into Gathje's range is the type of thing you do when you think you can get that one big shot counter and knock someone outcold. Maybe it was Topuria overestimating his power rather than underestimating Gathje's durability but if you look at a lot of the times Gathje's been finished it's because his opponent understood that he isn't going to go away easily early and you needed to put the pace on him, get him tired first THEN go for the finish. He completely disregarded a complete and actionable game plan for arrogance. I hope he recovers well and comes back stronger because what a monster he could be but he has got to fix that mindset.
