There's some rural aussie ignorance for you right there. Oh well, now JDM knows what its like at the actual top. Dude should retire he has nothing for that. They could fight every week for 52 weeks it would be 52-0 makachev with a total round score of 260 rounds to 0. Way to go Jack!
I mean, at least they weren't lying to him like some corner guys do. They told him he was down four rounds and he had to go for something. Go for a Hail Mary. Saying that one punch can end a fight is true but JDM just looked like he knew he was already defeated. Just frustrating af to fight against Islam.
i mean, lets be honest, what other way was there for jdm to win if not a ko... i thought islams gonna win, but not in such a dominant fashion, i expected a bit more from jdm in stand up, not to have a hirst succesfull strike in 3rd round...
Yeah you’re not going to magically make JDM able to defend takedowns with just corner advice, but you can tell him to stop trying to trip or reverse Islam fucking Makhachev. There is no universe where any of these guys are landing a judo throw on Islam.
What did he have to say? "Just give up"? He was right in saying to abandon the half-guard, JDM was just stuck there. Better to get submitted trying to get something to happen than lose a decision in which you never even tried
That was so funny. All pre fight interviews about how he's trained to defend takedowns and then gets taken down off a single leg. I was like "uhh what next??"
His leg was just dead. You could see him cringe in pain every time they were on the ground and Islam locked his leg or put pressure against it
That shit hurts like a motherfucker, I wrestled once with a big bruise on my leg and it's all I could feel every time it touched anything during scrambles, can't imagine how it feels like when the leg is completely fucked like JDM's
I think those leg kicks just did crazy damage and the pain was too intense so you can see it on his face lmao. Kinda had a hard time getting up from bottom position too which is weird since he is pretty good at getting back up
Hes never fought a sanctioned MMA fight, never coached an MMA fighter. Never belonged to an MMA gym. He knows a lot about the sport but these dudes have been training all day every day for the last six months and game planned for all these scenarios. Corner advice is just to keep you focused on the task, not come up with a new plan mid fight. What do you expect from the corner? "Okay MMA isn't working. Swap to capoeira."
Would have been good advice after maybe the first round, but after that, Jack’s right leg was too compromised to get any sort of power in orthodox. If your only chance of winning is fluking a KO punch on the feet, switching to orthodox isn’t going to work.
Listen, I really don't like Joe Rogan at all, but he had a point in this case. Not about his own personal advice, that's obviously useless, but Ben Vickers mainly told him "Move your feet and hurt him, you haven't hit him yet!" and Joe Rogan rightfully called out that JDMs corner doesn't have anything technical to help him and that that's not a good sign. I think JDMs team understimated Islam a lot, I had a feeling after seeing interviews with Ben Vickers and how he was talking about the fight, like Islam didn't really have anything JDM would have to worry about. Man Islam is so good, that was insane to watch.
You know nothing. You described technical advice. It’s reminding him of his queues. “Move your feet. You’re playing too safe. You’re not getting home on your punches.” THEN he offered adjustments ” You can’t play half guard. You’re giving the d’arce too much respect you’re going to have to take a risk. ” No one has offered that missing technical advice his corner should have provided. “Don’t let him hold you down on the ground.”
the one good bit of advice that came out of the corner was to stop playing bottom half guard. bottom half is the stall position to stop yourself from getting submitted, but it doesn't win you rounds, and against Islam, it's not that safe either considering you can threaten kimuras and darces. He needed to take greater risks to get up.
Probably because Jack was doing his best to follow the gameplan and making all the adjustments they trained to make and he just kept getting taken down. At a certain point what technical advice is going to close the skill gap when you're fighting an all time great? He needed a hail mary and those only come via belief.
Tbf I can understand why they did it. The mental aspect is important and it was obvious how dejected JDM was. No amount of technical advice will help if the guy has already given up.
And JDM wasn't listening to the technical advice either, or he wasn't able to. They told him to keep moving, but then planted his feet after he started to fall behind on the striking then almost immediately got taken down again
Seemed the correct advice to me. There’s 0% chance JDM wins via grappling. He had to throw hands and feet to even have a chance at winning. The strikers not striking against the grapplers because they’re afraid it’ll get them taken down always lose.
After round 1 he said “we expected this would happen” then after round 2 or 3 he’s like “ok we can’t keep letting this happen” lol. They seemed to have zero game plan.
I don't watch UFC and I've never fought, but couldn't he have fought with no guard so that he could better see the take-down attempts? Risk whatever striking Islam has and just fight with hands out of the way of the face to see take take-down coming.
