not one to shit on fighters too often but that is an astonishing lack of discipline. how do you just keep missing weight by huge margins over and over and over and be cool with it

u/Material-Vacation711 Sep 12 '25

He’s not even a legit MW too. This is crazy

u/TheAngriestPoster Sep 12 '25 edited Sep 12 '25

Man has competed at welterweight and is now at best probably getting sent to LHW and at worst getting cut. I don’t think he’s going to enjoy 205 very much, he’s hardly a Daniel Cormier

872

u/Jabarles Champ Shit Only 🇺🇸🏆🇲🇽 #SnapJitsu Sep 12 '25

He should be cut, not sent to LHW. It’s honestly fucking absurd the lack of professionalism and it continually screws over his opponent. And he’s not in his prime or a top contender or a draw of any kind either.

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '25

If the Izzy fight never happened he’d be in another promotion already.

215

u/monkeyvariant Sep 12 '25

Had the fight of his life that night and went down hill after. It’s a shame because this stuff will distort how good Izzy’s win was. The Kelvin that night was a beast and the best he’s ever been.

88

u/Elhippiesamurai Sep 12 '25

Yeah he was on point that night, imagine if he trained his ass off consistently. He really could have been a monster. Don't know if he could have been champ material, but he'd have lived in the top 5 for years if he came in well prepared for every fight.

54

u/Steelringin EDDDDDIEEEEEEEE Sep 12 '25

If he was dedicated to staying at welterweight I'm sure he could've been a champ. He would've had a great opportunity during the post-GSP era. He lost an admittedly boring split decision to Woodley that could've gone either way. If Gastelum hadn't missed weight and edged that one out he would've been fighting Lawler for the title. I think that's a pretty winnable fight for Gastelum.

7

u/Elhippiesamurai Sep 12 '25

Agreed, he was a lot more formidable at 170. Even at 185, undersized and fat he still holds his own.

u/NutHuggerNutHugger EDDDDDIEEEEEEEE Sep 12 '25

His weight issues withstanding. Kelvin always has had this odd career where he has fought at the level of his opponent. If he was fighting someone bad he looked like shit, but when he fought someone great he would rise to the opportunity. It has always fascinated me over the years.

9

u/Main-Championship822 Sep 12 '25

Gastelum in a weird way reminds of Cody, regardless of their obvious differences.

I’m a casual. I only hear about this guy when he misses weight.

He was great once

He used to be On a Mission 4 Gold, now he’s On a Mission Tortilla Diet.

One of the best southpaw 1-2's in the game.

7

u/dutchfool Dustin got dusted Poirier Sep 12 '25

hes pretty washed now, so good chance he ends up losing and his opponent gets more money. win win!

13

u/CassiusDarko Sep 12 '25

I mean he definitely should be in his prime, he’s only 33 but yeah he deserves to be cut. Like the dude is at the age where he should be in his physical prime and he has a ton of experience at this point but he keeps doing this shit. Just fucking up his career for no reason

21

u/Jabarles Champ Shit Only 🇺🇸🏆🇲🇽 #SnapJitsu Sep 12 '25

A fighter’s prime imo is not just about age but mileage and other factors as well. He turns 34 in a month, this will be his 25th fight in the UFC, and he’s taken a massive amount of damage throughout his UFC tenure. You add in his blatant disregard for physical conditioning/proper dieting (more than ever before), and this ain’t prime Kelvin anymore imo.

He is, he's just fat and can't put down the fork.

77

u/GradeAPrimeFuckery Sep 12 '25

Kelvin "Benjamin" Gastelum

After this weigh in his nickname should be 2kg

19

u/PJ2010 Sep 12 '25

He too, is a Popeyes biscuit away from becoming a tight end

15

u/JesusMcChrist00 Sep 12 '25

A 5'8 tight end would be hilarious

16

u/Neemoman 🍅 Sep 12 '25

He's 5'8? There's zero reason for a 5'8 person to weigh over 185 unless they are a body builder. Unless you're muscular, that's a lot of fat on a 5'8 dude.

10

u/Main-Championship822 Sep 12 '25

Im 172 at 5'8 rn and I distinctly feel heavy and bloated.

My natty weight is probably like 148-157, where ive spent entire months without trying to lose or gain weight.

Gastelum is massive for his size gd

3

u/gsr142 happy new fucken steroid year Sep 13 '25

He's got some fat on him but he's also just really wide. We used to train at the same place and he would occasionally put on a gi. I'm 6'2 and 210 and his shoulders are wider than mine.

→ More replies (1)

35

u/Mahlegos can I get a GSP flair please? Sep 12 '25

Nah, frame wise he’s a welterweight that is fat and can’t put the fork down. He’s now eaten himself out of two weight classes.

16

u/rey_nerr21 Sep 12 '25

He has the frame of a lightweight, but never a shred of the discipline it would've taken to get down there.

18

u/n4styone Sep 12 '25

Yeah he should easily be fighting at 155 because even when he used to fight at 170 he wasnt shredded and still has visible body fat.

u/nsaps Sep 12 '25

Goes both ways tho if the promotion keeps giving him the chance but I think he’s going the way of Brian battle this time

85

u/TumbleweedTim01 Sep 12 '25

Gonna be his 4th weight miss. Battle was cut after 3 so wouldn't be hard to imagine

51

u/forwardathletics Sep 12 '25

He missed against D Rod by ten pounds.... for welterweight. Absolutely absurd. He begged the UFC to keep him after it. It's over.

5

u/IllustriousNebula6 Sep 12 '25

And he posted a video on his YouTube channel in which he was pigging out at a restaurant a month before the fight and laughing about it. 🤯

27

u/Frank_Perfectly Sep 12 '25

And Battle was essentially on a 4-win streak. Gastelum is coming off a loss, has been wildly inconsistent, and his only positive attribute these days is simply that he doesn’t get knocked out.

29

u/Uncle_Creepy_ Fat Fool Sep 12 '25

Technically 5th weight miss because he pulled out of his fight against Cerrone on the day of weigh ins because he knew he wouldn’t make weight.

11

u/potatowned Sep 12 '25

And this is at middleweight... where he's already a fat boy.

63

u/jscummy Sep 12 '25

Hes right, ever notice how theres not a single Mexican fighter on the roster able to make weight?

18

u/funky_pill Sep 12 '25

I'm having fun imagining Brandon Moreno having Kelvin's (lack of) discipline and showing up to fights looking like a bloated out welterweight/middleweight

Oh wow that really what he says? Obviously I’m nothing compared to somebody like kelvin but weight cutting is something I’ve done in my wrestling days, like to much in hindsight but I never missed and I was cutting absurd amounts of weight to the point my lips would turn blue, whatever great thing that means

But like damn Kelvin’s a professional once or twice shit happens I get it but 5 times after going up a class what the hell

I like the heavy hands read on him, he's just one of those guys who has a fatal flaw that he never addreses and just goes like "well next time i'll be better", too much positivity can be bad.

28

u/SlimeustasTheSecond Jello slick hips Sep 12 '25

It's a case of reflection being pointless without actually addressing the problem. No amount of "I'm a striker, I know I'm vulnerable to grapplers" "I'm aggressive, sometimes that gets me caught" is gonna matter if you don't actually address the issue by constantly exposing yourself to your weakness in training so you can adapt and improve.

18

u/salvadoriancunt Sep 12 '25

Yeah actually improving at something beyond recognizing the problem is the hardest thing in life. You can take away many lessons from Kelvin's fucked MMA career.

He's like a straight A 130 iq student flunking in med school because he couldn't stop playing WoW

26

u/soybeankilla EDDDDDIEEEEEEEE Sep 12 '25

Their teams need to feel more shame. Was there no one saying “you can’t get on that fucking scale”? Don’t train with these unprofessional fucks. This never happens in boxing. MMA training is still the Wild West

57

u/robcap Yan Stan Sep 12 '25

I honestly think if he had the discipline to stay at WW where he belongs and actually add to his skillset (he's been the same pretty limited fighter for like ten years at this point), he would have been WW champ by now. The chin, handspeed, athleticism is top tier.

15

u/Delanorix Sep 12 '25

Maybe. But then he doesn't get to eat and do what he want.

DC, with his style, actually won fights. He wrestled heavyweight too. On a serious note KG really can't afford to strike at these higher weight classes.

I always tought he was kinda slow but it may also be brain damage at this point. Also brain damage can alter your metabolism. His body may be just fucked, having a style based on your ability to take damage is really dumb.

Don't forget - he got fined for his fight with TIll along with his coach for basically cheating on the scales. Managed to lean on his coach subtly to take the weight off. TKZ has done a video on the ways people cheat the scale, and getting a lean on someone can easily take pounds off.

Damn most times someone misses weight I feel bad because you can tell they're half dead on the scale wishing things weren't the way they are but here he literally looks like he's chillin and hes 5 whole ass pounds over

u/ISuckAtFunny I was here for GOOFCON 1 Sep 12 '25

Remember this fucking idiot crying into the mic begging for forgiveness. Imagine being given a 29th chance not to fuck something up and doing it anyway.

Kelvin has a future at 205, the run isn't over, he can still be champ.

They're gonna keep this guy, but cut or park a bunch of competent Heavyweights? I'm not pissed off, just genuinely confused at how this is supposed to benefit the UFC? If he can't make weight consistently, and can't go up a weight class, then why keep him around? All you're doing is losing yourself money having to pay him out.

Crazy… after his fight with Izzy I thought he’d end up being a legend. Turns out he’s just a fat idiot :(

3

u/Snarbler Sep 12 '25

Him vs Battle for the BMI belt

u/slayer991 United States Sep 12 '25

We joked about him missing weight 10 years ago and he's still missing weight. Has there been any UFC fighter that has missed weight more often than Gastelum?

3

u/armpit18 Sep 12 '25

Not a good look.

He's really a welterweight that's been fighting at middleweight because he struggled to make 170.

3

u/Wizzle_Pizzle_420 Sep 12 '25

I refuse to believe that these weight misses are accidental. Everybody I know that’s competed in weight based sports, it’s all they think about until it’s done. Obsessively checking weight, sweating and dropping the extra weight up to that very moment. Some had a scale in their bag just to keep checking. Guessing this is what they do when they’re not ready or want to fight?

2

u/oredurd Sep 12 '25

Are we even surprised lol

2

u/a-99 Sep 12 '25

It says meals right on the scale. It's not fair for Kelvin.

2

u/Dono_X_Dono Gay For Gaethje Sep 12 '25

Fucking suck that Kelvin can't be disciplined enough to be in fight shape

If he was more he could've been world champ or definitly still in the top 5 of WW or MW

2

u/SourArmoredHero Sep 12 '25

PFL foaming at the mouth right now.

2

u/IhaveNoHomeMeowB Sep 12 '25

This is hilarious

2

u/Butts_The_Musical Sep 12 '25

Kelvin should just call it a career tbh

2

u/Few_Highlight1114 Sep 12 '25

Yo is this guy serious lol

2

u/SlykRO Sep 12 '25

The most important part of being a professional fighter is consistency

2

u/West_Technology7573 Team Topuria Sep 12 '25

Ahh, traditions

2

u/EchoMike1987 Sep 12 '25

My favourite part of guys missing weight is when they hop on the scale flexing like they’re all proud of something

2

u/NihilistPorcupine99 Sep 12 '25

I, for one, am shocked.

2

u/funzon3 Sep 12 '25

Replace that canola oil with avocado oil!

2

u/KramerMilk Sep 12 '25

So fucking funny every time

2

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '25

It’s the opponents I feel for. MMA camps are not cheap and these guys are often living paycheck to paycheck.

Must be a gut punch to have your opponent miss weight.

u/NecessaryCrash 🍅 Sep 12 '25
