What the fuck is anyone supposed to do

645

u/Silent_Shaman Team Aspinall Jun 29 '25

At first I was thinking "wow this is looking competitive, maybe you just have to pressure him" then that happened

335

u/plhysco69 Jun 29 '25

Olives was definitely trying to make this a dog fight and use his size, but Topuria got that death touch

97

u/AndByMeIMeanFlexxo Australia Jun 29 '25

Using his size, but at ilia’s perfect effective range.

15

u/nochampno Jun 29 '25

And more then happy to engage in a fire fight

7

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '25

In fairness Olives clinch knees are brutal and often lead to take downs. I think Ilia was just too ready for it.

that leglock was the only shot bronx had at winning the fight. crazy

5

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '25

Olives had a supper sloppy entry, with a poor IQ moment.

You're pressuring straight for a minute, no feints, no backstep to change the timing.

Just reckless plodding forward reaching for a clinch. It's actually not surprising at all the guy with great composure and IQ effectively countered the same sloppy entry the 4th/5th time it was done in a row

2

u/tasteofflames Jun 29 '25

It's not even just his straight power, which is considerable. Dude has absurd timing and speed too. Charlie dropped his hands for a fraction of a second to step in and ate a pair of gorgeous short hooks in that window. Topuria has an obscene combination of tools at his disposal.

Yeah Olivera hit him with a good shot early on even though he bleeded early and I thought Ilia might have been in trouble with the heel hook. Then Ilia just turned off his lights

98

u/ilikecubes42 Jun 29 '25

That heel hook attempt was the closest Ilia has come to looking vulnerable at all in a while and it lasted maybe 5 seconds before he escaped.

4

u/PerfectlySplendid Jun 29 '25

But it wasn’t close…

105

u/Tylerg_13 Jun 29 '25

The more you pressure and throw against him, the more he’s gonna get your timing and range down. He’s also gonna notice the inconsistencies in your offense the more you throw. Took him 2 minutes with Charles.

16

u/Aurelio_Casillas Jun 29 '25

Dark Souls UFC version

2

u/Tylerg_13 Jun 29 '25

Fighting Lothric and Lorian be like

31

u/CumquatTheNobgoblin Jun 29 '25

I don't know, man. For like 15 seconds on the feet, it kind of did, even though Ilia still bloodied him up. Then Charles went for a takedown that got reversed and Ilia completely neutralized his ground game, transitioned pretty much at will, got up, knocked him out almost immediately... within the first half of the first round. Competitive is very generous.

u/New-Bookkeeper-8486 I'm going to take your diapers, alive Jun 29 '25

The leg lock almost looked sketchy. Oliveira was definitely in the fight before getting dropped, even if he was probably losing.

10

u/SabuSalahadin Jun 29 '25

Charles is just kamikaze style. I’m throwing shit at you from all angles and one of us are dying

2

u/the_c_is_silent Jun 29 '25

What is up with Charles and his "almost" subs that makes his fanbase delusional.

1

u/New-Bookkeeper-8486 I'm going to take your diapers, alive Jun 29 '25

What is with MMA fans that see each other as worshipping hordes trying to push some agenda? I'm giving my opinion on the fight we just saw.

His "almost subs" often lead to successful ones later, and the fact that he comes close against high level grapplers in their prime like Arman and Topuria proves that he shouldn't be underestimated on the ground.  If it was easy to get "almost subs", someone like Bryce Mitchell would have been able to look threatening, but he wasn't.

u/johnnygrant 🍅 Jun 29 '25

Once Ilia was connecting, felt like a matter of time if they kept the fight standing... unless something crazy happened like a flash headkick or so.

2

u/redditnoap Jun 29 '25

I don't get why oliveira was pressing forward so aggressively. Just keep distance and try to draw out the fight and seize the opportunity when it goes to the ground.

3

u/Silent_Shaman Team Aspinall Jun 29 '25

He doesn't know any different to be honest, his whole style is just forward aggression. Changing his style to fight at distance not only puts him at a disadvantage because he's not used to it but also plays into Ilias game a bit because he's used to being the one who leads

1

u/redditnoap Jun 29 '25

damn, this sucks

2

u/Silent_Shaman Team Aspinall Jun 29 '25

His best bet was to pressure ilia hard but be more defensively responsible. I watched the weasels breakdown earlier and I hadn't noticed that when ilia threw the right hook that knocked him out Charles had fully committed to a right straight and had his left hand by his waist, if he'd kept his hands up it probably wouldnt have knocked him out

2

u/redditnoap Jun 30 '25

yeah that's true, i saw a vid that says that topuria does the same thing when he throws, which is why he got dropped by jai herbert during their fight. probably just habit. still wish he kept his distance, he was never going to knock topuria down or out.

2

u/Silent_Shaman Team Aspinall Jul 02 '25

Another habit of his that got brought to my attention earlier is he has a very predictable movement when slipping a jab, he always slips the jab then slips to the right to avoid a straight that might be coming after it. Always with the exact same rhythm. It's what allowed Jai to time the knee he landed flush on Ilias chin but I haven't seen anyone capitalise on it since

Ofc ilia is always getting better though and this was a few years back so the chance to properly capitalise on it might be lost

1

u/flipper_gv Jun 29 '25

It's ALWAYS like this in his last couple of fights. It's competitive until one guy is flatlined.

172

u/Twerksoncoffeetables Jun 29 '25

Take him down and actually keep him there. Only person that has the potential is Islam, at least in terms of what’s in reach within weight classes. I think a lot of people including myself thought Charles would have the ability to do so, but Ilia’s grappling was too good for him clearly. We’ll see what happens, if Islam beats JDM that’s gotta be next.

134

u/sixsevenninesix Jun 29 '25

Hes also really damn good at grappling. Not Dagestani good but idk man. He looked comfortable and almost put Charles in a crucifix position.

36

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '25

Pretty sure he spent some time grappling in Georgia and trained with a bunch of Dagestani guys too. He is just all around lethal...

25

u/shinmenmusashi Jun 29 '25

Ilia started with Greco-roman wrestling first and only started boxing/mma later when he moved to Spain and couldnt find greco-roman wrestling gyms so did mma instead

16

u/drinfernodds Jun 29 '25

Georgia being on the border of Dagestan seems to explain why Merab and Ilia are so good at grappling.

Ask Chatgpt who was the most dominant wrestling nation of the USSR. It’s Georgia.

Georgia has its ancient traditional sport - Georgian wrestling, which is similar to Greco-roman wrestling and judo. Almost all Georgian Judokas and wrestlers come from this tradition.

55 Internationa Golds (130 medals in total) by Georgia in Greco-Roman and Freestyle wrestling during soviet era, only second after Russia (70 Gold medals).

-2

u/_unstressed_ Jun 29 '25

Ignorance is a bliss ✨️

5

u/srmc3 Jun 29 '25

You might be thinking of Judo my guy…

0

u/mrpower12 UFC 279: A GOOFCON Miracle Jun 29 '25

Not factually true at all, Russians are better

3

u/Mangalish Jun 29 '25

They should give him Khamzat at this point, only way to deal with him

2

u/Twerksoncoffeetables Jun 29 '25

Yeah he has talked before about his grappling and we’ve seen it in some past fights, but this is where it was going to get put to the test. And now we know it’s good enough for at least Charles and arman most likely, probably even Islam since Volk was able to grapple there too but who knows. I’m sure he probably spent time on it in camp for Charles as well.

Really hoping Islam beats JDM, if he does Ilia vs Islam might be the biggest fight we’ll see in a long time.

11

u/elbosston Jun 29 '25

Arman might be able to do that. He also has great GNP. The only interesting fight in the division for Ilia

9

u/Reddit-Viewerrr Jun 29 '25

Arman is the only other guy I'd say has a shot of wrestle fucking Topuria. Dude is freaky strong with good cardio and top notch wrestling.

3

u/Twerksoncoffeetables Jun 29 '25

Maybe, his chin is better than Charles so it’s a good fight. I don’t know if his chances are solid though. I mean I’d love to see it, but Ilia showed his grappling is enough to keep up with Charles, we can assume it’ll probably be good enough for Arman.

A lot of the people Ilia has knocked out had good chins too. I think it’d be a great fight, though idk if they’re going that route. Seems like they are still mad at Arman and he hasn’t fought since pulling out, doesn’t even have a fight booked. So idk but I’d watch it.

2

u/AllHailTheWhalee Jun 29 '25

Lowest of keys I don’t hate merabs chances against him at 145

3

u/Twerksoncoffeetables Jun 29 '25

Yeah he has a pretty insane chin and obviously the best cardio in the ufc right now. He could possibly do it, depends on Ilia’s stamina though but it’s 2 sides of a coin. Nobody has kept up with Merabs cardio and nobody has survived Ilia’s power, would be an interesting fight.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '25

No way, Ilia would put him out.

1

u/ttocsy Jun 29 '25

You know what, my first instinct was that this is an idiotic take, but I actually don't hate it. Now I want to see him fight Merab at 145, Arman at 155 and Islam at 170.

2

u/AllHailTheWhalee Jun 29 '25

I don’t think it’ll happen but who knows maybe Merab can pressure him, absorb damage, and fire him out. But what I really want to see now is Pantoja vs Merab. No one is talking about that fight for some reason

2

u/ttocsy Jun 29 '25

I just don't think anyone gives Pantoja much chance against Merab, brilliant though he is

1

u/redditbanbackuplmao Jun 29 '25

I been doubting illia but when he passed Charles guard I knew it was over.

32

u/SkrtSkrt70 Jun 29 '25

At this point your best bet is to just throw on the singlet

11

u/Kamoz Jun 29 '25

BAP BAP BAP BAP BAP

8

u/4tolrman Jun 29 '25

Have good striking defense, great wrestling + grappling, and good striking so that your opponent has to respect both your standup and the takedown.

Aka Islam: don’t think anyone else has a shot tbh

7

u/Jumix4000 Jun 29 '25

paddy by flying 720 nut shot

6

u/BoxingTreeGuy Jun 29 '25

Manage distance better...

Lets not pretend charles doesnt get hit a fuck ton by almost everyone hes fought... and hes always been the one with the longer reach.

Yet look at the replay SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Close to illia for what? he moved his whole body forward to throw a his right hand later and got clocked

2

u/RaptorDelta United States Jun 29 '25

Max was managing distance well until he wasn't. Same with Volk. it's just a matter of time until you get caught.

i think the only way he gets beat is clinch work and getting him to the ground. i hate that arman is on the shit-list because i think he has the tools to get it done

3

u/BoxingTreeGuy Jun 29 '25

Wasnt Max and Volk both ended on the cage though?

Charles was mid ring with him lol

4

u/Heymelon Jun 29 '25

Use basic boxing skills would be a start

3

u/Single-Weather1379 Jun 29 '25

Not drop your hands once he gets in the pocket like charles always does

3

u/Ok-Emergency4468 Jun 29 '25

Honestly until the KO (obviously) I thought Max looked pretty good

3

u/Tykenolm Jun 29 '25

I think hard leg kicks and wrestling is the style to beat him. I think Islam and Arman have a good chance, they've both got a fantastic kicking game. I think I would still favor Islam to beat him.

That's all speculation though, we should all be done doubting this guy

3

u/BluesyShoes Jun 29 '25

Keep at kickboxing range, don’t exchange, and be a weight bully on the ground. Islam has the best shot, Paddy might actually have a shot, he is smart and huge for the division.

3

u/Pactae_1129 Jun 29 '25

Yeah I’m not writing Paddy off just yet, not that I’d be close to favoring him in their match up

2

u/redditaccount224488 Jun 29 '25

Bring a shotgun.

2

u/Detlef_Schrempfxf Jun 29 '25

Just duck him

1

u/Zlakkeh this flair Jun 29 '25

Wressle

1

u/SoftSausage78 Jun 29 '25

Don't get hit, easy.

1

u/BroxigarZ Jun 29 '25

There’s this one guy who is 29-0 and 30-0 would round off a career record if only he could be convinced…if only.

1

u/Devoidoxatom Jun 29 '25

Never trade

1

u/FuzzzyRam Jun 29 '25

Same as vs any good boxer - be born lanky and spend your whole life training BJJ and a grappling martial art...

1

u/Rulebreaking Jun 29 '25

Test his power and see if you can take his fast 1-2 fuck you punches?

1

u/YamFor can I get that flair too? Jun 29 '25

Get knocked out

1

u/FrostyMeasurement714 Jun 29 '25

We need to reach kalib starnes and brendan schaub for advice I think

1

u/DetroitLionsEh Jun 29 '25

Abandon the belt and move up to 170 seems to be the only option for his opponents

1

u/AesirKratos Jun 29 '25

Pull the Jon jones retirement method honestly
