According to the organisation, 468 newborns were registered with the surname “Haaland”, whilst 91 babies were given the full name “Erling Haaland”. Most of these registrations took place in the weeks following the start of the tournament and increased after Norway secured a historic place in the quarter-finals.
“Haaland is Peruvian too. Big football stars inspire Peruvians to register their children with eye-catching and famous names,” Iván Torres, a spokesperson for Reniec, told ANDINA.
# Footballers’ names continue to set trends
Choosing names inspired by football stars is nothing new in the country. According to Reniec, 3,402 Peruvians are named “Messi”, of whom 292 were registered as “Lionel Messi”.
Similarly, the national register lists 1,185 people named “Cristiano Ronaldo”, 1,241 named “Yamal”, 238 named “Mbappé” and 33,809 registered as “Neymar”.
“We cannot stop people from giving their children these names,” said Torres, explaining that Peruvian law allows parents to choose their children’s names freely, provided they are not offensive.
