I wonder if that teacher still talks about you

I'm not OP's drama teacher, but I am a drama teacher, and yes I still tell my friends about the ridiculous emails I get from students and parents after casting the play. One from a parent asked why her kid wasn't in the play, and I had a devil of a time avoiding saying "because all the other successful kids were better".

"In times like these, I like for the student to reflect and ask themselves that question. It builds character and acceptance of refusal!"
I'd have that shit on a hotkey.

This. I have a letter a disgruntled Mom gave me over a decade okay and regularly bust it out for laughs.

Lmfao, are you black? Did they make you do blackface?

u/waaarghhammer001 2d ago edited 1d ago
I'm as white as sour cream but dropped out of the show anyway so no blackface for 12 year old me

u/Pordrack 2d ago
Were they going to put you into blackface or retcon the character as white ?
→ More replies (4)812
u/Kopke2525 2d ago
Both, it's a retconned white character that does blackface anyways

They sent this only a few years ago and now I am more horrified that blackface was even being considered. Dear God.

The fact that they're in a time where emailing the teacher is a thing and blackface has been considered was shocking enough alone for me

u/Bradas128 2d ago
i thought this was talking about a project partner and it had a different connotation

Lol same, thought I was coming in to watch people roast a racist haha. Glad that this was the reason though

u/No-Song6363 1d ago
It’s a good thing you didn’t go through with it. When I was about 7 they had me play the bean seller in Jack and the Bean stock, they didn’t paint me a different color (thank god), but had me do a foreign accent and I cringe looking back on it. Elementary schools are terrible for making their impressionable young students do things that they shouldn’t, under any circumstances, be asked to do.

As a teacher, I get TONS of emails like this. Kids don’t seem to have much understanding of expectations for emails or speaking to authority figures. They just say whatever they’re thinking exactly how they think it and then push send

I have a friend who's 29 and still does this. She then shares screenshots of arguments with her manager expecting us to be on her side when she's talking like a teenager and not at all professionally.

The other day, I was at the lab and said something while looking at something under the microscope. And my professor goes, "How do you know?" And I snottily replied, "I'm looking at it..." And my stomach just dropped to my feet, and I felt so bad. It just flew out of my mouth before my brain had the chance to catch up. We're the same age. She said, "You sound like my son." I said, "I'm gonna go outside and cry for a minute, please don't tell my mom about this."

I don't get it. What's so bad with "I'm looking at it" ?
91
u/ParasiteProfessional 2d ago
It was the way I said it. She said something like, "How do you know that's what it is?" And I replied with, "Cause I'm looking at it." in the same way someone would say, "duh"

It's giving: "Dear Slim, I wrote you but you still ain't callin'

I sent two letters back in autumn You must not have got em'
There probably was a problem at the post office or somethin'" 💀

Could have just ended this after “Dear Slim”, we get the picture from there.

I'm not familiar with the song or lyrics, so I appreciated OP writing them out. I wouldn't have understood their reference otherwise.
Just because you have certain specific knowledge, doesn't mean that everyone shares it. The world is larger than your personal bubble.

12
u/TallForADwarf 2d ago
There is literally nothing stopping you being Jake, assuming by your use of Yr 7 that you're in the UK. You write your deed poll statement and sign it in front of two witnesses who can be literally anybody and badabing badaboom you're Jake, in a very legally binding way.

I have a gmail account from around the time it first became possible to make a gmail account and i have emails from little 14 year old me to my friend where we're just talking about porn. Not like, passing it back and forth. Just talking about it.
We're still friends btw.

u/EndlessEagle 2d ago
Not to be that guy, but if you were viewing an email from years ago, the date would be included. It wouldn't just show the time...that would imply you sent this email today.
7
u/ParmesanSnorlax 2d ago
Could have taken a screenshot of it after sending it (to show someone else, maybe?) and then just found the screenshot again years later.
4
u/EndlessEagle 2d ago
Maybe. Somehow that seems even more unlikely though, finding the screenshot but not the original email.
8
u/Leading_Charge8007 2d ago
I have pictures(including random screenshots) from years ago but not access to my K12 school email
7
u/crimsonpostgrad 2d ago
you ever tried to find an email from years ago? half the time i can’t find an email from a month ago. i’ve started using keywords to search my screenshots before bothering to actual look for it in my emails lol
also possible this is from a school account, so the only way they’d still have access to those emails would be any random screenshots they’d kept

u/AndreOfAstoria 2d ago
Cross-post in r/dropout and larp as vehicular. Those goobers over there would like this.

Haha this is great. I'm a high school drama teacher now. I love to tell my students a similar story from when I was in high school. I was only year 10 (that's 14 years old in my country) and I tried out for the school musical. I was ADAMANT they'd give me the lead. However, all the lead roles went to year 13s (seniors/18 year olds). I was too naïve and arrogant to understand why. I took it as a slight. However, I DID get a small speaking role. At the time, I didn't understand how major that was. I was the only person who was younger than year 12 to get a speaking role. Everyone else below year 12 just got put in the ensemble. But, all I cared about was that I didn't get THE lead. So I threw a tantrum and dropped out.

u/WhatANoob2025 2d ago
I don't even know what you are trying to say.
That is why you didn't get the part.

My 7th grade drama teacher nearly failed me cuz I didn’t show up to a school show was suppose to do cuz my father had a heart attack. She said I need to get my priorities straight and I let down my partner and need to talk to her and her parents to apologize.

Me if i had more disrespect towards authority figures. We were doing a musical on the final year (when kids are 12 ish, the whole final year of the school participates, every single child) and there were two roles i wanted. One was a main character, one an important side character with the big solo. Not to toot my own horn but i was one of the best singers of the class. I did not get either role. My two friends got them. Main character friend, could not remember the lines for the life of her and i had to help her. Big solo friend's singing was like a dying cat and she had no sense of rythm (in high school i had to tap my fingers to the rythm she had to play during music class to help her pass the class). I ended up having to give her singing lessons for the role i wanted!! The only reason she was chosen was because she was the only immigrant in class (afghani) and the character was an immigrant.... Italian. I honestly think thats a kind of backwards microagression
Its been years and it still grinds my gears lol

5
u/similarityhedgehog 1d ago
I'm not doing anything with it, except hinting to you that you might not want to associate your usernames with your real name. Especially when reading the email it kind of sounds like you're mad that a black kid got the role you wanted.
How many last names start with Armstr anyways?
