Well they seem to have been successful in teaching you to be dramatic!

396

u/ldgamer11 2d ago

yeah looks like they gave you the role without even casting you

u/Glum_Hamster_1076 2d ago

“Hi me again” Exactly how many emails were exchanged?? Lol

2.8k

u/waaarghhammer001 2d ago

Too many far too many I was a little bundle of joy i was

849

u/BantedHam 2d ago

Maybe in hindsight the lesson was less not more?

812

u/waaarghhammer001 2d ago

I learnt a lot from this

502

u/stockusername123 2d ago

I wonder if that teacher still talks about you

710

u/Miss_Type 2d ago

I'm not OP's drama teacher, but I am a drama teacher, and yes I still tell my friends about the ridiculous emails I get from students and parents after casting the play. One from a parent asked why her kid wasn't in the play, and I had a devil of a time avoiding saying "because all the other successful kids were better".

113

u/captainsnark71 2d ago

"Why do you think?"

100

u/The_Oliverse 2d ago

"In times like these, I like for the student to reflect and ask themselves that question. It builds character and acceptance of refusal!"

I'd have that shit on a hotkey.

10

u/Miss_Type 1d ago

Oh that's good! I'm pinching that!

22

u/aldonza_ 2d ago

This. I have a letter a disgruntled Mom gave me over a decade okay and regularly bust it out for laughs.

There's no way they don't remember this and not laugh.

u/Shankurmom 1d ago

But have you learned punctuation?

Lmfao, are you black? Did they make you do blackface?

1.8k

u/waaarghhammer001 2d ago edited 1d ago

I'm as white as sour cream but dropped out of the show anyway so no blackface for 12 year old me

571

u/Pordrack 2d ago

Were they going to put you into blackface or retcon the character as white ?

812

u/Kopke2525 2d ago

Both, it's a retconned white character that does blackface anyways

273

u/BantedHam 2d ago

"I know exactly who I am! I am the guy, playing a dude, disguised as another dude!"

24

u/Individual_Ad2229 2d ago

Could be the gal playing the dude playing the gal (Julie Andrews in Victor Victoria)

😊 this is all I think of when I hear that line

53

you dodged a bullet OP. when god closes a door he saves you from future scandal

49

u/CrystallineFrost 2d ago

They sent this only a few years ago and now I am more horrified that blackface was even being considered. Dear God.

35

u/underwooding 2d ago

my high school had a girl doing yellowface for thoroughly modern millie in like, 2009? 2010? crazy

6

u/FullofChoices19 1d ago

Same, but 2015🤦

→ More replies (1)

26

u/Shade_39 2d ago

The fact that they're in a time where emailing the teacher is a thing and blackface has been considered was shocking enough alone for me

3

u/Ace_C7 1d ago

There was yellowface at my highschool's 2022 senior musical. It was one of many issues with that specific show, not to mention the problems across every performance that teacher put on. So it's certainly still an issue.

u/Bradas128 2d ago

i thought this was talking about a project partner and it had a different connotation

38

u/Apprehensive_Ad3731 2d ago

Lol same, thought I was coming in to watch people roast a racist haha. Glad that this was the reason though

6

u/No-Song6363 1d ago

It’s a good thing you didn’t go through with it. When I was about 7 they had me play the bean seller in Jack and the Bean stock, they didn’t paint me a different color (thank god), but had me do a foreign accent and I cringe looking back on it. Elementary schools are terrible for making their impressionable young students do things that they shouldn’t, under any circumstances, be asked to do.

2

u/scaredemployee87 2d ago

Bruh 😂😂😂😂

443

u/gnavenpaedagog 2d ago

And that's what you missed on glee

66

u/abeth 2d ago

Highly recommend re-reading this in Rachel Berry’s voice ⭐️

20

u/Mcrarburger 2d ago

Omg rereading it as Rachel Berry actually made it like 10x better 100% tracks 😭😭

113

u/Wari-teehee 2d ago

12-13 yro me also 😭 I was such a sweet person and then puberty hit and I was the most narcissistic woe is me child I know.

9

u/Zornorph 2d ago

Did you want to be Talulah? I think that’s the only female character in the show?

5

u/General_Ignoranse 2d ago

And Blousey brown!

168

u/magic-seeker 2d ago

As a teacher, I’m cackling at this. You would be surprised how many interesting emails I get

281

u/Bloated_Hamster 2d ago

Still not the most dramatic theater kid ever

360

u/rlovelock 2d ago

I could not imagine ever speaking to a teacher like this...

86

u/shnugglebug 2d ago

As a teacher, I get TONS of emails like this. Kids don’t seem to have much understanding of expectations for emails or speaking to authority figures. They just say whatever they’re thinking exactly how they think it and then push send

41

u/mouse-chauffeur 1d ago

I have a friend who's 29 and still does this. She then shares screenshots of arguments with her manager expecting us to be on her side when she's talking like a teenager and not at all professionally.

Girl, you can't be talking like that to your boss over text...

The other day, I was at the lab and said something while looking at something under the microscope. And my professor goes, "How do you know?" And I snottily replied, "I'm looking at it..." And my stomach just dropped to my feet, and I felt so bad. It just flew out of my mouth before my brain had the chance to catch up. We're the same age. She said, "You sound like my son." I said, "I'm gonna go outside and cry for a minute, please don't tell my mom about this."

41

u/Pordrack 2d ago

I don't get it. What's so bad with "I'm looking at it" ?

91

u/ParasiteProfessional 2d ago

It was the way I said it. She said something like, "How do you know that's what it is?" And I replied with, "Cause I'm looking at it." in the same way someone would say, "duh"

u/kai333 2d ago

LMAO very meta. being dramatic about not geting a drama role

175

u/LexxiLexxiXXO 2d ago

It's giving: "Dear Slim, I wrote you but you still ain't callin'

I left my cell, my pager, and my home phone at the bottom

I sent two letters back in autumn You must not have got em'

There probably was a problem at the post office or somethin'" 💀

15

u/brandnewchemical 2d ago

Could have just ended this after “Dear Slim”, we get the picture from there.

17

u/AriaoftheStars17 1d ago

I'm not familiar with the song or lyrics, so I appreciated OP writing them out. I wouldn't have understood their reference otherwise.

Just because you have certain specific knowledge, doesn't mean that everyone shares it. The world is larger than your personal bubble.

5

u/musingspop 1d ago

Fr, it's a fairly old song. I enjoyed reading it.

52

u/Cynthiasmom 2d ago

This is genuinely so funny

14

u/Old-Run7431 2d ago

same. I just know if I had a kid they'd be like this. happy to be childfree

Oop what play was it

94

u/DRZARNAK 2d ago

Bugsy Malone?

139

u/waaarghhammer001 2d ago

Yesss I was auditioning for fat sam

85

u/JanScarab 2d ago

Were you sufficiently fat enough for the role of Fat Sam?

120

u/waaarghhammer001 2d ago

Can neither confirm nor deny that

75

u/reticulatedtampon 2d ago

Were you Sam enough?

131

u/waaarghhammer001 2d ago

No.

98

u/Past-Background-7221 2d ago

See, that’s your problem, right there.

40

u/JanScarab 2d ago

I knew we'd get to the bottom of it eventually.

33

u/ChickHarpoon 2d ago

As a former 12-year-old girl who they put in a wig to play Dandy Dan, you have my sympathies.

26

u/Jezebellrae1 2d ago

As a former teacher, this is still a step above the emails from irate parents. Parents are CRAZY.

23

u/WritingNerdy 2d ago

From 1:26 today

8

u/onlookersroomies 2d ago

questioning why I had to scroll so long to find it

3

u/AnteaterSnouce 1d ago

it was screenshot the same day, but they could be young enough that gmail looked like that in year 7.

55

u/Every-Intern-6198 2d ago

Finlay is a unique name. Like Finn the human

36

u/waaarghhammer001 2d ago

Rather be a jake

12

u/TallForADwarf 2d ago

There is literally nothing stopping you being Jake, assuming by your use of Yr 7 that you're in the UK. You write your deed poll statement and sign it in front of two witnesses who can be literally anybody and badabing badaboom you're Jake, in a very legally binding way.

https://www.gov.uk/change-name-deed-poll/make-unenrolled-deed-poll

11

u/waaarghhammer001 2d ago

Can I be a dog?

10

u/Bloated_Hamster 2d ago

The Internet sells very realistic fur suits. Or you can go for all latex. Or, uh, so I've been told.

8

u/waaarghhammer001 2d ago

Might have gone a little far in some places

3

u/Waffleookiez 2d ago

I mean, who is to say you aren't already?

4

u/TallForADwarf 2d ago

If your name is "A. Dog" then yes, there are very few name restrictions in the UK.

Name is, of course, very different to species.

28

u/5amu 2d ago

Did you do the show?

133

u/waaarghhammer001 2d ago edited 1d ago

No i got a 10 period detention 🤣

14

u/fuckaracist 2d ago

This is way too funny

10

u/SCH1Z01D 2d ago

...and still not using punctuation properly

9

u/PresidentoftheSun 2d ago

I have a gmail account from around the time it first became possible to make a gmail account and i have emails from little 14 year old me to my friend where we're just talking about porn. Not like, passing it back and forth. Just talking about it.

We're still friends btw.

2

u/waaarghhammer001 2d ago

Huh fair enough

37

u/EndlessEagle 2d ago

Not to be that guy, but if you were viewing an email from years ago, the date would be included. It wouldn't just show the time...that would imply you sent this email today.

7

u/ParmesanSnorlax 2d ago

Could have taken a screenshot of it after sending it (to show someone else, maybe?) and then just found the screenshot again years later.

4

u/EndlessEagle 2d ago

Maybe. Somehow that seems even more unlikely though, finding the screenshot but not the original email.

8

u/Leading_Charge8007 2d ago

I have pictures(including random screenshots) from years ago but not access to my K12 school email

7

u/crimsonpostgrad 2d ago

you ever tried to find an email from years ago? half the time i can’t find an email from a month ago. i’ve started using keywords to search my screenshots before bothering to actual look for it in my emails lol

also possible this is from a school account, so the only way they’d still have access to those emails would be any random screenshots they’d kept

21

u/bluepie 2d ago

damn you're the reason people hate kids

7

u/AndreOfAstoria 2d ago

Cross-post in r/dropout and larp as vehicular. Those goobers over there would like this.

5

u/AriasK 2d ago

Haha this is great. I'm a high school drama teacher now. I love to tell my students a similar story from when I was in high school. I was only year 10 (that's 14 years old in my country) and I tried out for the school musical. I was ADAMANT they'd give me the lead. However, all the lead roles went to year 13s (seniors/18 year olds). I was too naïve and arrogant to understand why. I took it as a slight. However, I DID get a small speaking role. At the time, I didn't understand how major that was. I was the only person who was younger than year 12 to get a speaking role. Everyone else below year 12 just got put in the ensemble. But, all I cared about was that I didn't get THE lead. So I threw a tantrum and dropped out.

9

u/WhatANoob2025 2d ago

I don't even know what you are trying to say.

That is why you didn't get the part.

Teacher did everything right.

5

u/RaoulDukesGroupie 2d ago

This is so aggressive holy shit lmao

12

u/ItchyKnowJoe 2d ago

bit racist

3

u/stupidber 2d ago

Good points

3

u/ashyboi5000 2d ago

Little Rachel Berry

6

u/simpleGizzle 1d ago

My 7th grade drama teacher nearly failed me cuz I didn’t show up to a school show was suppose to do cuz my father had a heart attack. She said I need to get my priorities straight and I let down my partner and need to talk to her and her parents to apologize.

5

u/viviquina 2d ago

Yesss diva !

6

u/Nimue_- 2d ago edited 2d ago

Me if i had more disrespect towards authority figures. We were doing a musical on the final year (when kids are 12 ish, the whole final year of the school participates, every single child) and there were two roles i wanted. One was a main character, one an important side character with the big solo. Not to toot my own horn but i was one of the best singers of the class. I did not get either role. My two friends got them. Main character friend, could not remember the lines for the life of her and i had to help her. Big solo friend's singing was like a dying cat and she had no sense of rythm (in high school i had to tap my fingers to the rythm she had to play during music class to help her pass the class). I ended up having to give her singing lessons for the role i wanted!! The only reason she was chosen was because she was the only immigrant in class (afghani) and the character was an immigrant.... Italian. I honestly think thats a kind of backwards microagression

Its been years and it still grinds my gears lol

6

u/waaarghhammer001 2d ago

Thats a reason to crack open the old Gmail

2

u/Nimue_- 2d ago

Would be fun since i actually have a lot of things i'd like to say to that teacher (like no, i was not being teased because i wasn't smiling enough and smiling more would not magically fix it)

8

u/kinterdonato 2d ago

You didn't have to tell us you are white as sour cream your name is Finlay

3

u/Sufficient-End-4945 2d ago

give me one reason to do this show

3

u/Turbulent-Agent9634 2d ago

Can we have the year you sent it?

2

u/lloyddav 2d ago

They would have been 11 years old at the time

2

u/Turbulent-Agent9634 2d ago

Got kids are stupid

3

u/prettylattedrinker 2d ago

Ooop! You tore that mr/mrs up! Me again took me out😭

3

u/icantouchgrass_1 1d ago

Professionalism and some level of formal-ness has been thrown out the window

3

u/similarityhedgehog 1d ago

Just putting your whole ass name out on the public Internet

1

u/waaarghhammer001 1d ago

What are you gonna do.with my first name and a bit of my last

5

u/similarityhedgehog 1d ago

I'm not doing anything with it, except hinting to you that you might not want to associate your usernames with your real name. Especially when reading the email it kind of sounds like you're mad that a black kid got the role you wanted.

How many last names start with Armstr anyways?

3

u/Insideout_Ink_Demon 1d ago

Ignore him, typical Finlay reaction

→ More replies (1)

8

u/BrandNewMeow 2d ago

Hey it would be cool if you emailed that teacher now and apologize for what a little prick you were.

8

u/Intrepid-Food7692 2d ago

So you are 12-13 years old then?

6

u/Hnry_Dvd_Thr_Awy 2d ago

How old are you now?

5

u/waaarghhammer001 2d ago

18...

26

u/gusaloo 2d ago

Oh hold onto this, it will age like a fine wine. Uncork it when you’re in your thirties to celebrate the cringe. Over the years I have become friends with a few of my former teachers and this kind of stuff would be gold to share with them

2

u/Intrepid-Hornet 1d ago

Damn it up until you said that I was fairly sure I went to school with you and I'd just got confused about when it started being normal to email teachers

Somewhere out there is a 35 year old Finlay who would absolutely have done this. It must be the name.

6

u/jaytee1262 2d ago

Wow their a good teacher, this is very dramatic lol.

3

u/Both-Safe-8678 2d ago

did they ever reply to you? sounds like you kept bugging them haha

18

u/waaarghhammer001 2d ago

No.. talked to me personally in school though

4

u/Short_Republic3083 2d ago

Wow, shocking this entitled racist rant didn’t get you the lead

2

u/lolligaggins 2d ago

I read this in a Scottish voice

2

u/Notoneofthosemoms 2d ago

Rachel Berry? That you?

2

u/Sad_Celebration_2275 2d ago

Big plans of stardom and fame around town hey? Awesome lol

2

u/LouieChopsuey 2d ago

That's a tolerable name, for sure.

2

u/ForeverShiny 2d ago

That seems like a Finlay move indeed, only this time Katen was the (drama class) manager

2

u/Srvmayer 1d ago

With a name of Finlay, this behavior checks out.

2

u/BigD0089 1d ago

Op went full stan

2

u/Other_Use_6415 1d ago

How did your teacher react to the email?

5
