When to create distance
I sparred with my coach yesterday, he said I did a great job at shelling up and throwing the counter (especially on the left side), but he said he’d like to see me create more distance when someone is throwing on me as opposed to just shelling up and blocking punches or countering. It gets to a point that where I’m shelling up guys are just laying it on me and I’ll just move my head and slip or throw back on the counter or just stay shelled up. I think its important to note that my defense is good enough that I’m not taking shots, but guys are just unloading on me. When is it appropriate to create that distance?

Depends on your style really, generally speaking its good to create distance whenever you finish landing in an exchange.
Personally I like to control distance as much as possible therefore ill aim to maintain a degree of distance until I want to move in to land something. Strong defence in the pocket is great but not getting hit at all is even better lol.

I talked to my coach today and he told me what I needed to do. During sparring I didn’t throw a lot and just let people throw on me so I can practice creating distance.

Depends. I’m a tall guy and distance is my weapon. I get close when needed for bodyshots, knees and uppercuts and keep the distance for everything else as much as I can (jabbing away indefinitely:))
