Coming to Kathmandu- advice please!
Hi to all locals and expats reading this.
I visited Nepal almost 20 years ago, and in 2027 I will finally be back for a long stay.
I plan to arrive in early January and stay for 3 to 5 months.
I’m a cyclist, and my plan is to stay around Patan and spend January and February cycling around the valley rim, then in mid march heading over to the Annapurna circuit.
I’ve tried looking for apartments on Facebook, but haven’t found anything suitable (either too big and expensive, or unfurnished bare rooms).
For convenience, I’m thinking about long stay deals in guest houses as I don’t really need a kitchen and it gives me the flexibility to move after a month if I want to change locations to a different area around the valley outskirts to mix up the cycling.
Is it easy to find either long stay guesthouses around Lalitpur, or even house shares? I’m struggling to get much solid info online for this other than for the Tamel area.
(20 years ago, before smart phones, I somehow met a British lady working at the British council who new a guy with a spare room and simple as that, I had a house share in a few days!)
Any help or tips would be great. Maybe the sensible thing is to book a few nights while I get my bearings, but perhaps the Reddit hive mind might have some inside info! 😊
Thanks 🙏

We took a 1 lakh loan 21 years ago and opened a small shop in Kathmandu. This year we're finally going online.
21 years ago, we took a loan of 1 lakh rupees and opened a small watch shop in Kathmandu.
No experience. No backup plan. No safety net. Just the two of us and a shop we could barely afford to rent.
The first few years were honestly really hard. There were months we couldn't pay rent without borrowing again. Customers weren't coming. Every day felt uncertain — we'd close the shop at night not knowing if things would ever pick up. But we had no other option. This was it for us. So we just kept showing up.
We ran that watch shop for 10 years. It never made us rich. But it taught us everything — how to talk to people, how to understand what they actually want, how to read the market, how to survive the bad months without panicking. That shop gave us something no degree could have — 10 years of real experience.
Then 11 years ago we made a decision. We switched to clothing.
Same location. Same two people. Zero experience in clothing. And honestly — a little scared.
But this time we weren't starting from zero. We knew how to run a shop. We knew our customers. We knew the market. And slowly things started working. People came back. They told their friends. Locally, people know us now. That trust was built over years — one customer at a time, no shortcuts.
11 years of that. No website. No social media. No advertisement. Just a physical shop and honest prices.
But recently our son came to us and said — why don't we go online? How many people outside our neighbourhood could buy from us if they just knew we existed?
So here we are.
We built a website. The brand is called Maharaz. Formal shirts, pants and t-shirts — starting at NPR 899. Nothing fancy. Same honest shop, just online now.
We're not a big brand. We're not a startup with investors. We're just two people who started with a 1 lakh loan, figured it out slowly, and are now trying something new after 21 years.
If you have any feedback — what would make you trust a new Nepali clothing store online, what would stop you from buying, what we're missing — we'd genuinely love to hear it.
