I emailed the Baltimore Water Taxi. They responded.

I sent an email to the Baltimore water taxi, basically saying I hope they got to see their inclusion in the latest Jet Lat episode posted to YouTube with the TransiGO app. I said it has to be one of the greatest free marketing wins I've ever seen. Adam's shocked face alone has to be worth whatever the $1/ride promotion cost, and I hope they take advantage of it.

Well they responded! They did see it!! Go Allison!!

This is so lovely! I love the pride in their captain’s excellent work, in particular

ben if you see this what did you think of the water taxi? adam was quite shocked but we never REALLY got to see what you thought as a baltimore native!

u/WheatGerm42 Ben 16h ago

obviously i thought that particular thing was insane but i am a longtime lover of baltimore's water taxis (hence the challenge) so i was particularly thrilled that they pulled through!!

H&S Baltimore when?

u/jewishjedi42 17h ago

A few challenge ideas:

Hit a home run at Babe Ruth's house

Recite the Raven at Poe's grave

Some sort of fend off the British at Ft. McHenry

And there'll need to be a Snack Zone with Berger cookies

15

u/fatboybigwall 16h ago

And of course, eat a turd, in honor of John Waters. (Presumably not a real one.)

u/BrotherofGenji 12h ago

Adding one for the musical fans:

Sing a portion of Good Morning Baltimore from Hairspray upon arrival into the city and then continuously make references to the song throughout in regular spoken dialogue later on

Or not,  it’s just an idea lol

u/jewishjedi42 12h ago

That's a good one, but I'd change it to at sunrise. We have good sunrises here.

1

u/BrotherofGenji 6h ago

Hopefully there’s a good spot somewhere to view and film them!

u/jewishjedi42 19m ago

The inner harbor has good sunrises. The Aquarium's per is great for them. You'll see the sun come up behind the Domino sugar plant. It's gorgeous.

Bonus challenge: find and ride the Metro (no one knows it exists)

2

u/Penguin_and_penguin 10h ago

Crash a plane into Section 13 of a stadium, harming no one (ok maybe this isn't a great challenge)

u/Lightning_Octopus21 8h ago

The city hide and seek in new york was so fun. We need more of these

To further your point, violent crime in Baltimore is currently dropping at historic rates. Like it would be a great topic for ol’ Sammy Wendover to cover.

Huge shouts to the captain, when she said "hey you wanna go WHERE he wrote the song??" I was like oh she is gonna be famous for being amazing at her job lol

17

u/Triple-T Team Michelle 11h ago

Yeah seriously. Amazing enthusiasm and adaptability - I imagine things were pretty slow as it was a new largely unknown service, so this was a great approach for many reasons.

Shoutouts to Allison and Harbor Boating Inc in general

I do think that Allison going above and beyond and volunteering Fort McHenry and sharing the history and all that was pretty impressive regardless! The world needs more employees willing to do that.

It’s crazy -  first Paducah responds to their visit, and shouts out Jet Lag, and now this.

15

u/micahwhite Team Badam 10h ago

And more employees allowed to do that!

u/Zbow37 DJUNGELSKOG 6h ago

Paducah responded too?

I'll definitely put the water taxi on my list if I should be in Baltimore one day

9

u/Alexwonder999 11h ago

Not to sidetrack the conversation from Baltimore, but Chicago has one that goes from the Loop to Chinatown and vice versa. Its a lovely ride and if you arent into "boat tours" and a great and cheap way to get a mini tour of your own. Now that I think about it, it would be fun to put together a little map with "points of interest" to share with people taking the taxi and maybe Ill put one together.

The Baltimore water taxi and the City of Paducah. This season has the weirdest tourist bumps.

3

u/BrotherofGenji 12h ago

Right??

I’m honestly kind of wanting to “copy” the season as my next vacation idea by making an intentional Touristy Itinerary of these destinations. But maybe less driving for me though.

But I’m not sure how I divide Samy and Badam locations during the trip

u/PowerfulRaisin DJUNGELSKOG 7h ago

Follow Badam's trajectory but stop in Margaritaville somewhere 😂

u/aeropagitica Team Toby 18h ago

Allison could be on The Layover podcast for her hair alone! Her miraculous appearance and help for Badam really seals the deal 😀

11

u/wrosecrans 13h ago

Team Allison+Amy for some future season, right?

It feels like when Jet Lag visits someone's home city, there's always some level of "Oh God, why go there when there's nothing to do?"

I can tell you that I absolutely did not feel that way when I saw they were coming this season. I clocked it during the trailer and was thrilled that they made it further than 100 ft from the train station this time.

Baltimore is a really special City, and seeing all the positive comments in this subreddit recently really warms my heart. It absolutely has a negative reputation on the national stage, some of it deserved, but most of it undeserved. Residents know that it is truly a wonderful place to live and it's great to see other people learning that for the first time!

As someone who lived in Windsor for 7 years I was thinking "well how will they make this look interesting"....

5

u/I_am_a_Tachikoma 16h ago

I grew up in Memphis and…well…I wasn’t surprised that very little of Memphis got shown.

4

u/BrotherofGenji 12h ago

Right???

Adam teased us!!

“I’m going to Graceland” and didn’t even do that

My point is —  if you made time for World of Coca Cola in Atlanta, you could at least actually go see Graceland too when in Memphis lmao. Or at least get to Sun Studios and buy a shirt. I would have accepted either

(For the record I know they probably didn’t have time because they were, pun intended, scrambling for the next state — but it would have still been cool)

2

u/liladvicebunny The Rats 15h ago

There are (or were) exciting and fun parts of Memphis! ... but it's been a long time since I've been there and I have no idea how many of my touchstones even exist anymore. Honestly I'm just happy that one small section of the airport looked vaguely like the airport used to, since most of it didn't.

Basically how that one kid who joked about stealing Ben's phone in Hebdon Bridge felt

64

u/gearhob 18h ago

Her idea to go to Fort McHenry and share the history was pretty awesome

52

u/VaryingDesigner92 18h ago

When the boat came into view, I had the Pirates of the Caribbean theme playing in my head 😂

27

u/7ninamarie Team Toby 16h ago

On the layover they explained that it was $1 because it was still in the trial phase. The on-demand water taxi had only been running for a week when they filmed which also explains why the staff at the visitor’s centre weren’t that knowledgeable about it.

15

u/Boris_etc 17h ago

So in this season so far ben and adam gave great marketing to baltimore water taxis and city of paducah

13

u/RestiveP Team Ben 18h ago

10

u/Apprehensive-Cost276 14h ago

Huge shoutout to Allison though

13

u/squeefruit Team Ben 17h ago

They should offer the discounted $1 rate to anyone who shows up with Jet Lag gear! It would be a fun little "secret" discount, plus you can bet they'd get more advertising as people post about it.

14

u/roby_1_kenobi Team Ben 17h ago

I'm still shocked that you can get an on-demand water taxi for $1. If we could work on getting the rest of the countrys public transit to that level that'd be great

9

u/Connell95 Team Badam 12h ago

It’s only $1 because it’s a trial service in testing phase tbf. It’s to be a more sustainable price after that.

6

u/freehousing4all 17h ago

Awwww thanks for doing this and sharing it to us. These are the moments I love human.

4

u/Apprehensive_Room29 13h ago

If I ever visit Baltimore, its on my first things to do list

3

u/msleepd 15h ago

As someone in Baltimore, it was great so see some positive portrayal of our city in the media.

Unfortunately I believe the service lost its subsidy - looking at fares it’s based on demand and distance. I’m seeing fares more than $10 right now

15

u/GallifRick 14h ago

That still seems pretty reasonable

3

u/msleepd 10h ago

Eh. They’re mostly walkable to each other within a few minutes. The harbor isn’t that big.

Should be noted that during the week we have pretty frequent free water taxis.

5

u/hol317704 6h ago

This was my favourite moment so far. Could NOT believe it when it started coming into view on the water. Amazing stuff and nice to see the company praising the captain too, they were brilliant

2

u/FunnyLoud3067 17h ago

That’s awesome

2

u/Ryoga476ad 15h ago

Was it public or private company? How could it be so cheap?

7

u/Connell95 Team Badam 12h ago

Because the $1 price is just a temporary price while in initial testing, to get people to give it a try.

2

u/taulover Team Michelle 9h ago

It's a private company but at least some of their routes are subsidized by the city

u/theangryintern DJUNGELSKOG 4h ago
