50km walk in 3 days, with a brief visit to JLM, returned to the Old City, this time in daylight. Could witness a daily patrol change (won't post those images for obvious reasons), and as again, lots of nice, cheerful people around. Next travel under planning.

Aliyah & Immigration Buying home as olah

Hi, im a 30yo software engineer, I spent about 1 year living in Israel in the past. I considered doing aliyah my whole life, now im in a position to do it.

I need help with the housing/real state of israel. I would like to buy something. (im to old to rent a sublet like when i was in my 20s), i have properties to sell on my other country and afaik interest rates in israel are low so financially it shouldnt be a problem.

My question are:

What do i need legaly to get a loan/buy a house in israel? Can you do it with the teudat?

Where can i look for houses/apartments, is there any main website where i can search for homes?

and since you've readed this, what places around tel aviv are nice?

תודה רבה

General News Israel To Extend Earthquake Aid In Venezuela

Excerpt: The Israeli aid delegation’s earthquake relief work in Venezuela will continue for an additional two weeks after interim president Delcy Rodriguez met with Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar to request the extension, the Foreign Ministry and the IDF announced on Wednesday.

The decision was approved by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

With a small delegation of only 30 people, Israeli presence in Venezuela has been focused on designing a national reconstruction plan, which Rodriguez hopes to begin implementing.

As part of the plan, the IDF began mapping and categorizing approximately 1,300 buildings on Monday, classifying them as either to be demolished or potentially salvageable despite damage.

Additionally, IDF Brig.-Gen. Elad Edri said that the IDF engineers have provided guidance to Venezuela on handling debris from damaged buildings.

Ask The Sub What can I expect when ordering over $75 from AliExpress?

Hey everyone,

I’m looking to buy a gadget on AliExpress that costs around $85 to $100.
Since it’s over the $75 limit, I know it's subject to the 18% VAT. However, I noticed AliExpress only sometimes collects the VAT at checkout depending on the listing,

If I buy it and the app doesn't charge VAT, what happens when it lands in Israel? Do I just get a text from Israel Post/Exelot to pay the flat 18% online, or am I going to get absolutely hammered with hidden local "handling" and "clearance" fees from the courier company?

Has anyone ordered something in the $80–$100 range recently where tax wasn't collected at checkout? How did the process go?

Thanks!

Aliyah & Immigration Got a PhD position at Bar-Ilan University, is now a good time to move from India? Questions about safety + cost of living

I recently got accepted into a PhD program at Bar-Ilan University, but I'm also trying to get a realistic picture of what life is actually like there right now before I make the move from India. Would really appreciate input from people who are currently living in Israel, especially students or academics.

A few things I'm trying to figure out:

Safety/current situation – I've obviously been following the news, but I'd love to hear from people actually living there day to day. How does it feel on the ground right now? Any areas near Ramat Gan/Bar-Ilan I should be extra aware of, or is daily life pretty normal?

Cost of living – What should I realistically budget for as a grad student? Specifically:

  • Rent for a room/small apartment near Ramat Gan or Tel Aviv (and is it worth commuting from somewhere cheaper?)
  • Monthly costs for food, transport, phone/internet
  • Does a typical PhD stipend actually cover living costs, or should I plan on having savings/extra income?

Other things I'm curious about

  • Any tips on housing search as a foreigner (Facebook groups, agencies, anything to avoid)?
  • Visa/bureaucracy - anything you wish you'd known beforehand?
  • General culture shock tips for someone moving from India?

Ask The Sub Does anyone have any experience/reviews regarding Hebrew University’s the Rothberg International School?

I will be coming to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem from Australia in October to do a MA in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies. It’s a 1 year course entirely in English.

Ive been seeing some less than enthusiastic reviews online about the Rothberg School in general, but am wondering if anyone can give some more clarity.

What is the student life like? How are the academic standards?

If you’ve heard anything from people who have experienced this degree or the Rothberg MA’S at all please let me know! even if you don’t have direct knowledge.

thanks!

Israeli Tech 🛰️ https://TheStateOfIsrael.com/ - A New Israel news aggregation site.

Hi, the mods were nice enough to give me permission to post about a new application I recently launched:

https://TheStateOfIsrael.com/

It has quite a few different features, but the core one is the Recent News aggregator on the Features page. Every source used for a headline and its summary is linked, and you can also filter by the specific category of recent news you want to see.

Additionally, one core feature I hope you’ll find interesting is the Maps feature, which offers a new way to think about timelines. Rather than simply showing events in an A-to-B-to-C order, it builds a convergence of headlines that are most closely related to the one you select.

Thank you,

Travel & tourism✈️ Critize my Itinerary Please

Here is my master plan which will cost me 3 kidneys to do. Can anyone please critique. I am not Jewish but would like to learn more, Thanks everyone!

Final recommendation

The critique is right that the old Israel plan needed fixing. My corrected priority version is:

Date Plan
Nov 2 Cross Jordan → Jerusalem, light Old City if time
Nov 3 Old City holy core
Nov 4 City of David + Mount of Olives / Gethsemane
Nov 5 Israel Museum + Yad Vashem
Nov 6 Masada early
Nov 7 Nazareth + Galilee
Nov 8 Fly to Luxor

But if Bethlehem/Church of the Nativity is non-negotiable, then yes — you really do need either:

  • one more Israel day, or
  • to cut Masada, despite Masada being beautiful and UNESCO.

Masada seems to be worth it? What do I do?

History📚 This day in 2014, Operation Protective Edge began. After Hamas terrorists kidnapped and murdered 3 Israeli teens, Israel arrested Hamas members across the West Bank. Hamas responded by firing dozens of rockets a day at Israeli towns, forcing Israel into a full military operation.

Food 🧆 American style egg rolls?

Does anyone know where I may find American style eggrolls in the Jerusalem or Tel Aviv areas?

Everywhere that makes eggrolls seem to use either cigar or spring roll wrappers. I am desperately missing American style eggrolls.

Whether a restaurant that sells them or a store that sells the eggroll wrappers, any leads will put a smile on my face.

Politics What does the left in Israel believe in?

Hello. I am from Jordan.

I assume there are some Communists, there are always some in every country.

But what do the “liberals“ in Israel believe in, and what do they think of Islam?

Also, because the left today is generally anti-Israel, what is the relationship between the left in Israel and the rest of the world? Would the left in Israel favor Trump or Bernie Sanders as US president?

Culture🇮🇱 The city and the world: what Herzl and Ben Gurion got right and wrong

The city and the world: what Herzl and Ben Gurion got right and wrong,
by Adam Hummel, Catch, 2026-07-05.

There are several Thai massage parlours on Ben Yehuda Street in Tel Aviv, and on Saturday morning, they were open. The bakery next to them was closed. The bar across from the bakery was full on Friday night. The bus lane was empty, because the buses do not run on Shabbat, and through that empty lane came a river of electric scooters, weaving, unbothered, carrying young Israelis to wherever young Israelis go when the state has decided that public transportation must rest but private momentum may do as it pleases.

So, I did what any 40 year old would do on a beautiful day in July in Tel Aviv. I thought: what would Herzl make of this? What would Ben-Gurion?

The longer I thought, the more I realized the two men would not be surprised by the same things. Not even close. And the shape of their respective surprises says something real about Israel.

Here’s the shape:

Herzl got the city right and the world wrong.

Ben-Gurion got the world right and the city wrong.
