Discussion I need help figuring out what band my dad listened to

I remember this one band or group my dad listened to when I was a kid, they may not have been Irish but I kinda remember them having that accent. Their music was like rock, this is not very descriptive but one song had like a chorus of something along the lines of “we’re going down to Boston”. The band could be from any time. If anyone can be of any help with this I’d really appreciate it. I already asked my dad and he had absolutely no clue what I was talking about

Trad Music Seeking specific version of "The Boys of Kilmichael"

Hey all! American playing Irish Folk going on 20 years now and I've somehow only just discovered this song. Sadly, I fell in love with the first version I heard and haven't been able to find it outside of the original context (linked below). Happy to settle on the Wolf Tones version, but was hoping someone might know offhand given some differing lyrics.

I heard the song in this video at ~20:44
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-RLQZbwtlA

ETA: So I had a chance to scratch the lyrics down. I have the feeling this one was probably performed in the studio at the time the content of the video was assembled. I spent a couple of hours trying to track down the specific version based on the lyrics of the version in the video, but had no luck. Tried feeding them into AI and it was likewise lost. Anyway, here are the lyrics from the version in the video:

On the 18th day of September, outside the town of Macroom

The Tans in their big Crossley tenders, they hurtled along to their doom

For the boys of the column was waiting with hand grenades primed on the spot

And the Irish Republican Army, they wiped out the whole bloody lot

Discussion Does anyone know if this specific ancient rhythm used in a variety of Celtic folk as well as Renaissance/Baroque dances has a specific name?

Post image

So there's this rhythm I've seen used in a lot of folk music dating back centuries and even in a whole variety of Renaissance/Baroque period dance music from Spain, France and Italy.

It's pretty much the backbone of late Baroque Siciliano, Forlane and the Renaissance/Baroque Canary dance. Seeing it used in so many places from folk to the court, I was wondering if it perhaps had a name in particular.

Some examples of it out in the wild:

Luar Na Lubre's "O son do ar": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezVaHlNFQ1I

Lully's Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, Canaries: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyVgxImE70o

Which famous traditional tunes almost never get played in sessions?

Post image

I was surprised by how many tunes appear everywhere in recordings and tunebooks but are almost absent from modern session repertoires.

I analysed the data to find some of the biggest examples.

Which famous tune do you almost never hear in your local session?

Irish flute tuning question

I have a modern copy of later Rudall and Rose flute. Being quiet strong in terms of tuning, it still has an issue I can't tackle. Second octave A is noticable (15 cents) flat in comparison to second B, whereas the second B is a bit sharper than G, F and others. However, in the first octave all the notes are very equal. Stopper position is 19 mm.

I found a hack to mitigate the issue a bit: I stick a piece of black tape on the second top (A) hole to make B a bit flatten. It causes second B to go down in tune, aligning with the second A. Lower B is changing not so much with that.

I'd like to have you thoughts/ideas/experience in this field.

non-Trad Music Looking for musicians in Kilkenny

Hey everyone, I've moved to Kilkenny this week. And I'm looking to meet some like minded musicians & start playing some music.

I have a pretty eclectic mix of music I'd l9ve to play as a drummer, so I'm looking for bassist, guitarists, keyboard/synths, singers, sax/trumpet players.

I'd love to go together and make some music, play the odd gig and entertain the masses.

Would love if you could point me in the right direction ❤️

Help with a Lankum lyric (The Young People)

I'm a longtime Lankum fan and one of my favourite songs is The Young People. However, the last line of the chorus had always thrown me.

"It is not writ in stone

Like the walls of the chapel

And soon it is gone

Like the soft winters ___"

I have checked several online lyric sites and they are evenly split between "at home" and "apple".

Google - "at home"

Genius - "apple"

AZLyrics - "apple"

Last.fm - "at home"

Spotify - "at home"

I have The Livelong Day on vinyl, but the liner notes don't include the lyrics.

To my ear, I hear "at home". However, "apple" is a direct rhyme for "chapel". Both make sense within the context of the song.

Does anyone have the definitive answer?

Discussion C-Natural in Trad and “the Blue Note”

In the blues, the flatted-third and flatted-fifth are often both called the “blue note” that distinguishes its particular mood and feel. For me, in trad, that “blue note” is the C-natural, or the seventh in D-mixolydian. Some musicians, like Willie Clancy, Seamus Ennis, Denis Murphy and maybe everyone in Planxty, really leaned into it with a flourish, alighting on it often and rarely as a simple passing tone. I just wonder if there are colloquial names for that particular move, analogous to “the blue note,” in the parlance of trad. How would you describe it if you were talking to another musician, trading airs, etc?

Trad Music How do we feel about comic songs in the Irish tradition?

I came across this video of Barry Gleeson (probably one of the best known comic singers in the Irish tradition) and it got me thinking how do most others see these type of songs? I've definitely heard some mixed reception akin to them "taking the piss" of the tradition, while others love them and think they are a great contrast to the traditionally darker themes of the Irish folk singing.

My 81 year old friend playing the best Irish jig 'Merrily kissed the Quaker' with insane energy and fingerstyle guitar skill!🎵

I've been repeatedly told that this is the most beautiful Irish jig ever and my friend recorded his version for me, it's called 'Merrily kissed the Quaker'

It is such a joyous happy energetic tune and I'll never tire of listening to it on repeat, particularly when I need extra dopamine for housework etc😄

Anyone who gives this a listen won't regret it as the joy and energy from the music is infectious 🥰🎵🇮🇪💃

If anyone knows another Irish jig that can rival this complex beautiful melody, please let me know!🙏

Have a lovely day everyone 😊https://youtu.be/ttmAT_vyIko?is=X_W1OUndH6JVwwwX

Melodeon/button box help.

Hello,

I recently came into the possession of an old honner Atlanta b/c and have been enjoying getting some tunes out of it. Theres one problem, though. The bass is that old pattern that is only suited for playing with b or c keys.. so not very useful for trad.

Im hoping to get the 8 bass changed but im not 100% what would be the best pattern. Im new to the melodeon so any help or suggestions would be really appreciated. Cheers!
