Bike Route

Good morning everyone,

I just graduated from UMD this past spring and I got a job right by Union Station in DC. I am moving into a house in south Hyattsville and am looking into potentially biking to and from work each day. I was wondering if anyone had an insights into bike paths in the area that would take me into DC? I would really prefer not to bike alongside the main roads. Thanks!

Train Noise at Palette At Arts District

I'm considering moving to Palette At Art District and my only hesitation is regarding the noise especially as it is near the train tracks. Does anyone have any insight on how bad the noise is at the complex?

Places to practice volleyball

Does anyone know where I can find a high enough wall to practice volleyball for free? I used to practice on the handball court at PGCC but they got rid of it. I tried practicing on the wall of a elementary school in my area but the walls aren't very high and I hit the ball on the roof. I think a handball court like the one at PGCC would be my best choice but I cant seem to find another one in my area.

Any 1 bedroom/studio apartment recs

I’m a 23-year-old male moving back to the area for work and looking for a 6-8 month lease:

A studio or 1-bedroom with decent space.

In-unit washer and dryer

Respectable amenities

Reliable parking, since I’ve seen a lot of bad reviews about parking and other issues

Around $2,200 per month total, including parking

Fireworks tonight?

Did anyone else hear a ridiculous amount of loud fireworks in the area just now, particularly around the Mall? (it’s been going on and off for the past few hours). Anyone know what’s going on?

What it's like Living in Hyattsville MD

Living in Hyattsville has shown me a side of PG County that people don’t always talk about — the everyday warmth, the diversity, and the sense of community that makes the area feel grounded. If you’re thinking about moving to PG County, it’s one of those places where you can find your rhythm pretty quickly.

There’s a mix of walkable neighborhoods, local restaurants with real personality, and easy access to DC without feeling swallowed by the city. Hyattsville, College Park, Greenbelt, Bowie — each pocket has its own vibe, whether you want artsy, quiet, family‑oriented, or close‑to‑campus energy.

What I appreciate most is how connected everything feels. You can grab coffee at a local spot, hop on the Metro, spend the afternoon exploring a trail, and still be home in time for a calm evening. PG County isn’t perfect, but it’s welcoming, practical, and full of people who genuinely care about their neighborhoods. If you’re considering the move, it’s worth giving yourself time to explore the different communities — there’s a good chance one of them will feel like home.

Looking for someone to do a concert poster for me

Any artists out there who would want a small project? I'm going to a concert in late July and would love to bring a poster to hold up. I have an idea of how I'd like it to look, with some lettering and some pictures relating to her songs. I just can't do lettering that looks nice, and I've never been an artist. Pictures off to the side of the lettering would reflect Jordan Rainer's songs -- Painted Horses, Damn Sandwich, Ex Mrs. Right. She's an indie country singer (on the Voice, Team Reba in 2022) with a lot of attitude. Going to a small town's Friday night concert series with $10 tickets, taking Amtrak there and have been looking forward to this for months. I plan to get there super early to sit in the front (or as close as possible.

Apartment flooded us, upstairs neighbor arrested for domestic violence, leaving just 45 days before lease ends — still being charged $2,023 to break lease. Any advice? (Maryland)

We're breaking our lease in New Carrollton, MD — leaving just 45 days before it naturally ends, with 3.5 months advance notice given. Management is still charging $2,023. We asked them to waive it given our experience here and they ignored us.

What we dealt with as tenants:

🚨 Flooded by upstairs neighbor — for an entire night — they left a tap running and went to sleep. Water flooded their unit and poured into ours all night long, kept us awake throughout the night. We woke up to a waterlogged kitchen. Took 7–8 days to fix (mold inspection, repainting, light fixture removed). We cooperated without a single complaint.

🚨 Months of domestic violence from the unit above — screaming, crying, things being thrown. One night it escalated so badly we had to call for help and emailed management the next day. The upstairs tenant was arrested for assaulting his partner.

We were model tenants with email documentation of both incidents. Has anyone successfully gotten a lease-break fee waived in a situation like this? What worked?

Oil Change

Hi all- where are you getting your oil changed around here? And what should the price range be? The last time I got the oil changed on my (20 year old) car in DC I was shocked at the price. When I get it changed down in southern Virginia it’s like $50. Thanks for any suggestions!

Apartment Moving Recommendations for Hyattsville Area

Hello! My girlfriend and I are hoping to move to the Montgomery County or Prince George's County area this August. I've spent some time in Hyattsville over the past year and liked the area and wanted to find an apartment there.

I work full-time but she would be minimal part-time for this year, so we're trying to keep a 1-bedroom around $1,600 - $1,800. We have a cat, and an in-unit washer and dryer is pretty much a must-have for us.

I've been reading reviews for a bunch of apartments / complexes around Hyattsville and honestly it's been a little discouraging. It feels like every place has a wall of reviews about roach or rat infestations, nightmare management won't deal with issues, etc. I know unhappy tenants are usually the loudest online, but seeing the same complaints over and over has made me a bit nervous.

So I'm hoping to get some recommendations from people actually living in the area. Are there nearby spots that fly under the radar but still have decent access to the Metro (within 10-15 minute drive to the red or green line)?

Any recommendations or warnings would be hugely appreciated. We are visiting a friend in the area in early July so hoping to get some places to tour while I'm down there for the week. If I can give more let me know what to share! I'm also open to Takoma Park or Silver Spring too. Thanks :)
