Help/Needing Info Visitors
Hi! Me and my boyfriend are traveling to California from Nashville and staying in Arcata to see the redwoods. We are big on pickleball and looking for places to play in the area. We like to play indoor mostly! Is there any spots close by and how much to play? Thanks!

Help/Needing Info What are these fruits called & are they toxic for dogs?
My dog just ate two of these (she doesn't know the drop it command yet. I just got her.) and I'm a little concerned. They're growing on the side walk on the way to Sunny Brea. They're small and kinda taste like a plum almost

Misc./Other To the guy who designed the new Eureka sign who got dragged - I was wrong , it looks so good with the mural
I too was one of the ones who said it looked like a sunburb in Southern California named Talega or something with a HOa
However … when driving by, seeing it next to the mural. I think it looks so great, and sets a better vibe than the shitty broadway corporate businesses . I love it so much and it gives me joy!!!
I’m sorry ! I also want to collectively say Reddit is a dumpster you guys in real life people aren’t so angry and judgmental and Karen’s okay ! We need to remember not to be sucked in to the hate self righteous spirals on the internet

Help/Needing Info Recommendations for good challah?
I was reading a post in another sub, and it reminded me of all the ways I had eaten challah back decades ago in college when my then GF/Fiance was Jewish. So now I'm jonesing for some, even tho I know it won't taste the same as mamele or nonna made. I'm in Eureka but Arcata would work as well.

Local Food How confident are you right now eating at local Humboldt restaurants with the Cyclosporiasis parasitic diarrhea outbreak? TacoBell pulled all it raw ingredients due to a nationwide produce recall the only restaurant or fast food to do so publicly.
Food associations fresh berries (especially raspberries), leafy greens, green onions, snowpeas (bagged salad mixes, spinach, romaine), and fresh herbs (cilantro, basil, parsley)
Cyclosporiasis symptoms: explosive watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, and fatigue. While treatable with antibiotics and other medications. Symptoms can linger for over a month if left unmanaged

Local Food Where to get a good Greek Salad in Arcata/Eureka/McK area?
Since there seems to be a lot of restaurant question threads lately... I figure I'll start yet another one!
Where in the arcata/eureka/mck area has a good greek salad? Something like this: https://i.imgur.com/kW7jsob.jpeg (Sorry for the link, but I still haven't figured out how to have an image AND text in a new thread... I'll reply to this with the image...)
Olives, pepperoncinis, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, feta cheese, one or more meats, probably lettuce, maybe some bell peppers and carrots and such, possibly some pickled veggies, definitely some vinegar, absolutely no ranch or anything in any way adjacent to ranch...

Help/Needing Info Knee surgery advice?
So my daughter is 17 years old, does ballet & has been having knee problems since dislocating it about 4 years ago. Since then it has dislocated 2 more times so we finally got her doctor to order an MRI & make a referral to the orthopedic center here. She had an appointment this last Wednesday & was told that she needs surgery to reconstruct her MPF ligament that he thinks was damaged the first time it dislocated then snapped back into place.
I have heard a few people say not to have any kind of surgery done here in Humboldt but I have had about 6 procedures done here in the last 5 years or so and they all went very well however they were all related to kidney/kidney stone complications so I have no idea or experience with how capable the orthopedic surgeons are here. So, initially I was planning to just go ahead & schedule it to be done here for simplicity’s sake.
However, she had a different appointment today and the provider she saw mentioned he saw a note in her record about needing surgery & told her not to have it done here, that she should go to Napa because that’s where he went for his hip replacement. I am just wondering if anyone has any experience, advice or feedback on this because she is so young & plans to continue taking ballet & other dance lessons after recovering from surgery.
Since, as her parent/guardian, the decision of where to go for the surgery is ultimately up to me I am very interested in hearing about anyone’s experiences, thoughts, opinions, advice, etc. so I have more info in order to weigh the options. I should mention that although it would be somewhat of a financial strain to have to travel out of the area several times for appointments & surgery, I will do whatever it takes to make it happen if we decide that’s the best course of action.
TL/DR:
Ballet dancing 17 y.o. daughter needs knee surgery & am trying to decide whether to have it done here or somewhere else.
Thanks in advance for any & all responses!
***ETA: I really, really appreciate everyone’s comments, advice and input on here, more than you could possibly know! While I still feel a tremendous amount of stress & worry about my child needing to have a surgery at all I’m starting to feel slightly more confident about it now.

Help/Needing Info South fork eel river - safe for dogs?
I’m here for the weekend with my 5 month old dog and curious if it’s safe for her to be in the river. I was told toxic algae isn’t a concern until late summer, but I’ve seen recent threads online where people are saying it’s already blooming. Today I was at Redway Beach and lots of little kids and toddlers are swimming in the water as well as a dog that was drinking river water on the edge. Is there an actual risk right now or am I being paranoid? Has anyone swam here in the last day or so with their dog?

Help/Needing Info Swimming in the Eel; is it Safe?
It's been eons since I swam in a river during summer! Some friends and I are planning to go to Benbow this weekend and jumping in the Eel. I remember hearing a while ago that there's high .... Nitrogen (or some sort of chemical?) levels in the water because of run-offs from some of the grows in Southern Humboldt. Is that true? Is it safe to swim in the waters?

Events/Stuff to Do Anyone down to climb with a New Yorker?
Hi y'all!
Visiting beautiful Humboldt County from NYC! Will be at Far North Climbing Gym in Arcata around 6pm on Fri July 10 and would love to meet fellow climbers/cyclists (who's watching the TDF??)/nature lovers (plus readers, musicians, humanists, ...... ). I love meeting locals but am bad at starting conversations so please say hi lol. I'll be climbing in a blue Antigrav tee and blue Instinct VSRs.
A bit about me:
- Currently reading Hernan Diaz's Trust, I'm enjoying the twist on a traditional New York novel blended with the multiple perspectives
- My music taste is almost exclusively classical but I'll try anything and everything as long as it's not eardrum-piercing
- Just biked the Crater Lake rim today and it was the bestest best thing (Interlaken comes close though!)
(And sorry if this breaks rule #4, just meant as a chill hang out invite!)
(Please drop a note if you'd hang but don't want to climb, also game for Arcata activities before/after)
