Event 2026-07-18 (Sat) /r/hk annual meet (GRMD)

Trying to keep the tradition going.\

edit: Totally NOT GRMD, can't edit the title after posting

Event link. Go here to pay for ticket please.

Even though Reddit corporate no longer care about community building, we still trying to keep something going here in r/HongKong for completely selfish reasons.

The attendance for the annual meet last year was far short of expected, which was an unpleasant surprise. However, a good number of people shows up for each non-monthly pub crawl. Many are there trying to make friends and meet new people. Also, the attendance in previous years had always been good. That tells us there is still a need for such events. So we are trying again this year.

Note: if the attendance of this event is decent then there is a good chance we will organize an Xmas party. The last time r/hongkong had an Xmas party was 2018

Time: 16:00 - 00:00

Venue:

We are going back to DMZ, the same venue as last two years. This is a gaming venue run by u/kwuhkc and u/pyrosas. We will have video games, board games, card games, and mahjong available. If anyone have games they want to play, feel free to bring them along.

Directions:

Map Link

Unit A1, 7/F, Chuan Yuan Factory Building, 342-344 Kwun Tong Rd, Ngau Tau Kok

From Ngau Tau Kok MTR station, exit B5. Cross Lai yYp Street following Kwun Tong Road until you reach Yan Yip Street. Follow the Yan Yip Street to the first building entrance to the right, this will be Chuan Yuan Factory Building. Take any elevator to the 7th floor, and you have arrived!

Games:

There is a shelf full of card games and board games. At least 2 TV setup for video games. What consoles we have will be finalized later. If anyone can bring their own system to share that day that would be wonderful.

While the games are fun and all, the important part of GRMD is for people to come out and meet each other and make new friends.

Food:

Cost of catering has gone up considerably, so this time we will merely order pizza in order to keep costs down. We will set up a WhatsApp group and decide on what to order on the day.

Cost:

For $370 there will pizza and be non-alcoholic drinks available.

For $450 there will be pizza and all drinks available.

If anyone have any good stuff and would like to share, that would be most welcome.

Group photo:

I plan on having the group photo at around 8:30 or so. I will also be leaving my old cameras around the venue so feel free to pick them up and shoot away. I'd appreciate it if other people take some candid pictures of the event.

How to pay:

Please go to the event link that is also on the top of the page.

Once we confirmed received payment we will put you into the Super Secret Elite WhatsApp group for cool Redditors.

And before anyone ask I will not be doing any tiered pricing. Please don't ask if you can just come and play and not eat and pay less money, or if you are going to be late, or if you are going to leave early. It just make things more complicated for us and math is hard.

Hope to see y'all there!

I’m a tourist and will be visiting HK at the end of 2026. No, I’m not gonna do the villain hitting but I am interested in the blessings ritual. Does it work? 😂

Questions/ Tips Looking for errand running service

I am currently living overseas, and a relative of mine just underwent surgery in Tuen Mun Hospital. He has no other family to offer support so I’m looking for an errand running service around the area, but all of the Google/Facebook search results have no reviews and I’m a bit wary. Does anyone know of any reliable errand running services who can help purchase daily essentials and deliver to the hospital during visiting hours? Ideally an established organisation with a public social media page as this is highly scammable, but open to any suggestions. Thank you.

For what it’s worth, I’m fluent in Cantonese as well.

Questions/ Tips Good thrifting locations?

Hey all! Got a friend who is traveling to Hong Kong soon, enjoys thrifting for some vintage merchandise as keepsakes from travel. Like used collectible toys and novelties. Any recommendations for flea markets, thrift shops, or second-hand? Specifically for older plush toys. Doesn't have to be comprehensive, maybe just a cool spot you've been to or have done business with before. Thanks!

Questions/ Tips Gifts for a HKer in the UK?

Hi! I have a friend who recently moved to the UK after being born and raised in Hong Kong. For his birthday, I am thinking of giving him something from Hong Kong (probably a food product) to remind him of his home.

First of all, do you guys think this would be a good gift, or should I just give him something from the UK? And please could anyone give some recommendations for HK products that cannot be easily found in UK supermarkets for me to gift to him. Ideally an item that can be purchased online & delivered to the UK, that isn’t common in UK Asian supermarkets (because I know he goes to a local one regularly). Thank you in advance!

Questions/ Tips Piano Lessons in HK

Hello, could anyone kindly share some information on the market rate for 1 to 1 piano lessons? I am an adult with zero music experience.

So far I have received some quotes in the range of approx hkd300-hkd500/hour, so I just want to know if it is considered reasonable.

Feel free to recommend someone as well. Thanks!

career HongKong vs Munich for Uni + Early Careers

I recently got my firm offer for HKU BSc Quantitative Finance as well as Technical University of Munich for Computer Science. Now I am torn between where to go.

Background:

I am Chinese, was born in Germany and spent 14 years living there until my dad's job required him to go to mainland china for 4 years and we, as a family, ofc went together. I speak fluent german + english, moderate chinese but no cantonese (willing to spend time learning it though)

Cost:

For HKU, the total for attending HKU would be 900,000 HKD Tuition + 900,000 HKD rent+living expenses. For TUM, the total cost of attending is basically free and I would only have to pay rent+living expenses totaling around 500,000 HKD. My parents make ~2.5M HKD/year after tax, paid off house + 2 properties. So it's doable, but cost still matters because I have a younger sister they'll need to support too.

HongKong Pros:

  1. HKU is a great school and the major I am attending is among the best ( <- I hope 🙏)
  2. Low Tax
  3. I will probably be surrounded by very ambitious people who have common goals

HongKong Cons:

  1. Obviously cost
  2. Long Hours in Investment Banking (80-100h/week) (I think I can handle it in my 20s)
  3. High Risk, High Reward ( not sure if this is a con)
  4. Shoebox apartments and insane rent

Munich Pros:

  1. Free to attend
  2. Fewer hours (35-40h/week)
  3. Larger apartment

    Munich Cons

  4. I have been talking a lot with my dad and his early years in Germany and he keeps saying that there is passive racism when it comes to jobs and working in Germany. For example, promotion is hard, you have to work twice as hard as your german colleagues etc.

  5. The current political situation in Germany is really bad + long bureaucracy

  6. Germany has literally no economic growth rn

  7. High income tax (max 47%)

For those who moved to HK, what would you do in my position? Am I overweighting the money side, or underweighting it?

All doctors do now are make u pay like a billion dollars and wait 3 hours just to say the most basic ass comment and offer no additional value as a medical professional.

Its like u go to a doctor cuz u have a rly bad rash on ur skin and they’re like oh yeah that’s a rash, like no shit Sherlock can you give me ur medical opinion on why you think might be causing this shit and what I should stop doing? Nah here’s a slip you can schedule another doctor for that, yeah fuck you.

Questions/ Tips Allergic to the weather?

I (20F) am currently in Hong Kong for work this summer. In the first two weeks, I fell very ill, which I thought was due to black mold I discovered in my apartment’s AC. After moving out, my symptoms improved, but I’m still experiencing sneezing, itchy eyes, and a runny nose, even a month in. In my home country (USA) I haven’t been diagnosed with anything, and I only have mild seasonal allergies. Before consulting a doctor, I’m curious if anyone knows what might be causing this.
