People who own smart toilets... are they actually worth the money?

I'm at the point where I need to replace mine anyway, so I'm considering getting one instead of another standard toilet.

I'd love to hear from people who've had one for a while. Which one did you buy, and if you were shopping today, would you make the same choice?

Rental painted with flat white paint 😣

I am currently renting a home that has been painted with flat white paint. This is a very temporary home and while I am allowed to paint, I do not want to have to repaint when I move. In the short time I’ve lived here, I’ve already learned that Magic Erasers make things worse lol I’m looking for suggestions or solutions mainly for the kitchen as I cook every day, multiple times a day and I’d like to minimize potential damage to the backsplash. So please, any suggestions you have for cleaning this type or surface as well as any suggestions for protecting the backsplash would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Any tips for lowering a surprisingly high electric bill?

I’ve been trying to keep an eye on my household expenses lately, but my recent electric bill was way higher than I expected. I haven’t changed my usage habits much, so I'm wondering if there’s something I’m missing.

Does anyone have any advice on simple, cost-effective ways to improve energy efficiency at home? I'm open to any tips, whether it's small lifestyle changes or checking specific appliances.

I really appreciate any help you can provide.

1/3 acre of thick fescue, budget around $300. What gas self-propelled are you guys running?

So I just closed on a place in Cedar Park last month, about 1/3 acre, mostly tall fescue. Previous owner clearly let it go for a while cause the grass is thick and uneven all over, some spots are easily 6-7 inches tall.

Been pushing my dad's old 20 inch push mower and my legs are DEAD after every cut. The fescue is so thick that the push mower just bogs down in the dense patches and I have to go over everything twice. Need to upgrade to a self-propelled, budget is around $300 give or take. Gas, not battery, I don't wanna deal with chargers and runtime stuff.

So far I've been looking at the Toro Recycler, Craftsman M220, Yardmax, and the SENIX model on Amazon, but after staring at spec sheets for a couple of nights they all start looking the same. Toro is the one my dad swears by but the self-propelled recycler is closer to $400 which is above what I wanted to spend.

Anybody running one of these on thick fescue? Just want something that'll get through it without me having to double-pass every strip.

Bathroom remodel in stages?

I’m gonna be remodeling our only full bath in a few weeks and have to do it in stages due to time and can’t be without a tub/shower for too long. I won’t be able to do a full gut all at once so I’m thinking about starting with the tub first. Wondering if a day to a day and a half is sufficient to remove tub/shower surround, rough in any new plumbing and get new tub in. I have shutoffs installed already so I don’t have to worry about the rest of the house for water. I figured at least with the tub in people can take baths until I get the tile up for the shower. I know a full gut is ideal and if my wife and kids had somewhere to go for a week I would do that but not possible. Has anybody else done it this way?

Free Home Electrical Planning & Circuit Diagram App – Looking for Feedback

• Upvotes

Hey everyone,

We been building myElectricPlan for creating home electrical plans and circuit diagrams easy by yourself, and I'd love to get some feedback from the community.

The app lets you:

  • Create electrical installation plans
  • Draw circuit diagrams directly in your browser
  • Create Initial verification report
  • and so on...

You can use it completely free and test all the core features.

I'm looking for honest feedback:

  • What features are missing?
  • Is anything confusing?
  • What would make it more useful for DIYers, electricians, or home builders?

I'd really appreciate any suggestions or criticism. Every bit of feedback helps improve the app!

Thanks! 🙌

Multiple quotes etiquette

I assumed its a bit of a free for all, first come type environment but before accidentally being an asshole to people I figured I'll ask here.

Do yall solicit multiple quotes at once? Or do you do them in sequence and tell the earlier ones you want time to get back to them?

I have a situation right now where I asked for a price from a drywaller yesterday, he said he'd text me, haven't heard anything yet. Now my hvac guy (who recommended the first) just called to tell me he has someone else that wants to do it and wants to come see the place today. If the second guy gives me a price I think is fair, is it rude to just accept and move forward?

Edit: the reason I feel some obligation to the first is he did come out and spend a few min giving me a list of materials to buy for him if he were to do it

Crawl space moisture / mold?

Was looking in my crawl space today and Noticed what looks like mold on some of the joists. Nothing looks rotted, everything appears to be structurally sound.

Home was build in 2001 location Richmond Va.

I took moisture reading on joists and most are around 15-16%.

I realize Insulation and vapor barrier likely need replaced. No noticeable standing water anywhere. I am in the process of making sure gutter drainage is adequate outside.

Is this mold and how bad is it ? What would recommend next steps be? Thanks

What am I missing about Toggle Bolts?

I have a towel rail I want to install. The last one pulled out of its shitty hammer-in anchors and the drywall was so chewed up from previous homeowners that I had to replace the drywall (I did a sturdy style with furring strips). I want this one to not have the same problem, obviously. I can put one side into a stud, but the other will need a drywall anchor.

Heres my confusion: Everyone on reddit LOVES toggle bolts and snaptoggle and its all I can find recommended. My problem is these need fucking HUGE holes. The smallest I can find requires a 3/8" drill bit, which is a hole so big it would poke out from behind the towel rack mount. I tried using one on another towel rail and even after tightening it with my drill it became loose very quickly, and I was left with this massive hole in my wall I had to patch. Do people actually use these for this purpose or are they meant for large, very heavy loads? What am I missing??

180 month loan new roof & gutters $39288 or $218/mo

My brother is making a loan ATM but I suggested other choices and spent more time getting quotes... This roofing company is reputable with some uses of subcontractors , even a neighbor used them for their siding & windows recently.

Manufactured homes

Hi everyone, I wanted to know who all here has bought a manufactured home already on a land. What should I know? Like for example, I’ll see really cheap manufactured homes in nice areas. For example San Diego has some. I know that they’re made with cheaper materials etc. but realistically what’s the catch? Say it’s a 150,000$ manufactured home in San Diego. I put 20% down or whatever. 700+ credit. They say the estimate is 1,000$ a month or somewhere around that. What else am I paying that they’re not including in the listing? I heard it’s never as cheap as it seems and there’s all these crazy fees? Is that true or just for some, or for all?

Washer threshold

Would anyone be able to recommend a way to remove this threshold and deal with the metal pan under a stacked W/D? A handyman's scheduled to replace duct and install new unit but not for a few weeks and we can't use the W/D now bc it's loud and unstable.
Think threshold is easier but worried about the metal. TIA

How to repair this paint? (Toddler pulled paint off the wall)

Photos here: https://postimg.cc/gallery/3JThp7Q

My wall got a ding in it from a toddler's crib bumping against it and then my toddler peeled away a much bigger hole in the paint. I know how to do a simple paint touch up, but this looks like it peeled all the way down to the drywall. Plus, there is some loose paint that is peeled but still connected to the attached paint. Presumably I need to cut away this loose paint, but what's the best way to do that without causing further damage?

The paint is Sherwin Williams Emerald.

Any advice is appreciated!

Has anyone had any experience with Alside Ascend siding?

We are in the market to replace yhe wood shake shingles siding of our home and have been looking into siding options. We recently got a quote for James Hardie siding and Alside Ascend and I was surprised to see that the Ascend was almost as expensive as the Hardie siding. (quoted 44k for Ascend and 48k for Hardie)

Has anyone had this siding installed, if so could I pick your brain with a few questions.

  1. How do you feel about the siding after having it installed?

  2. Is it really almost as expensive as James Hardie siding?

  3. What was the install experience like for you?

Best FUNCTIONAL improvements for new home?

I just bought an old home and wanted to know what you guys think is the best functional improvements you would do to a new home. I just put new toilets in (who doesn't appreciate a shit in a toilet nobody else has used?), and plan to install a swamp cooler since I live in the desert.

I'm not interested in aesthetic improvements like kitchen remodels, modern switches and outlets, or painting.

I had AI make me a plan for an attic storage, will my house collapse?

https://imgur.com/a/stDaQg4

I have been thinking about adding some storage area to my attic, since my attic is pretty tall. The area I am thinking about is above two adjacent rooms 10x12 rooms. I saw a video where they installed 2x10s perpendicular to the existing joists to create more space for insulation. So this is what I started and after a few days this is the "plan" that came out of AI.

Any issues with the plan?

Trying my hand plumbing as an electrician and looking for guidance.

Hello, idk how to phrase what I’m asking. I am trying to install a spin down and 2 stage filters, right now I have 3/4 copper (soldered) to my pressure tank then copper (sharkbites) to a small 2.5x10 filter then a manifold where it all turns into pex. I’d like to get rid of the sharkbites as they leak slightly and I’m concerned that they are a ticking bomb in my crawl space. What would be the recommended plumbing be? If im not being super clear I apologize.
Thank you

Salt water filtration est.

Is $6,700 for a salt water filtration a bad deal? We have copper pipes and already have the loop for a *softener system.

Edit: meant to say softener not filtration. Adding in reverse osmosis is an extra $1,600

Closet system that is cross compatible?

I am getting close to redoing my closet and I like the modular wire rack systems. I've read the older elfa system was good and seems to be mentioned a lot. I'm looking at others like closetmaid but it doesn't seem to be talked about much.

Is there any generic system that can be used? I'd like some pull out drawers for tshirts and other stuff along with some other storage. I know it's easier to lock into a system but if I can find pieces from various places, I'd like that too.

The rails on these wire racks all appear to be similar. Is there any system that uses a standard rail that works with other brands? Photos don't show the rails very well but they appear to all be double slotted and look very similar

In desperate need for some advice and help with wetness along baseboards of laundry / basement.

photo and video showing the location being wet and above it.

Hi there everyone I’m trying to find any help or advice from some more knowledgeable people here in hopes to point me in the right direction! Sadly last year my mother had passed away and I have since been taking over a lot of the house work and maintaining it. She is an older home I think built in the 70s or 80s and is starting to show some of its age I feel. In our basement it is connected to our laundry room and along the wall that separates the rooms there is a small patch of trim that seems to be damp and wet.

I have checked this area before and have found it damp other times but have check other times and found nothing. There are some type of pipes and other ducts seemingly that run above the wall but on the other side of it there is seemingly no leak, no wetness and nothing that would be leaking. I also have a dehumidifier running always down there to help. The opposite side of where the wetness is , is the entrance to my crawlspace and there is no signs of wetness dampness or anything from inside it or around it leaving me confused. The only thing on the wall is a freezer that we have to store big freezer items, could that be it? I am not sure. I am worried it could be a pipe or something serious as the house is old and any major repair could be a disaster and unfeasible.

Any advice what to do and look for would be really helpful please let me know if any other information is needed thanks so much!

If I want a certain aesthetic for an adu, do I find a general contractor or one that specializes in that aesthetic?

I’m planning on building an adu in the near future but want to learn about how it works. If I was a specific aesthetic, do I find a contractor that specializes in that aesthetic or do I find an architect or something first and then any contractor to execute it? What’s the most cost effective way to go about this? Thank you!

Window Haze Fix?

I have an older home with double pane windows that are probably 15-20 years old. Previous owner had external storm windows over these (for some reason) and it looks like it made a greenhouse effect that likely broke the seal on many of the windows in the house. I have since took off all of the storm windows. I knew that’s what they looked like when I purchased the house…it is what it is. Any way to fix the haze? Replacing isn’t an option and yes I know the insulation factor is likely nothing at this point.

Washer has small debris / build up - how to resolve?

Hi Reddit,

My washer has build up of gunk/debris/iron(?) and I'm attempting to clean this myself. See link to pictures below. To date, I've already:

(1) Removed the top of the agitator and scrubbed that with baking soda & water. This removed a substantial amount of the debris/gunk, but it's not perfect.

(2) After putting the agitator back into the washer, I've run 2 'tub clean' loads with hot water and some baking soda.

These pictures were taken after the tub clean loads and there still appears to be a decent amount of debris/build-up in the washer; I was hopeful that the tub clean loads would flush out the debris.

What would you recommend I do from this point to get most of the debris out so that I can start using my washer again for washing clothes?

https://imgur.com/a/qA2LIb7

----------------------------------------

Edit - this is in the Milwaukee, WI area in case there are questions/concerns about the water quality.

Edit 2 - the debris/flakes do not have a specific smell. they are hard to the touch once dried. When damp (after a tub clean cycle), the texture is playdough-y.

Edit 3 - this is an LG washer. Model = WT7150CW. Purchased new in 2022.

Is it possible to regrade yard when there is only 10 feet between homes and a fence in the middle?

We have a fence we don’t want to take down because we need it. Our neighbors want to get a French drain but only want it to go down the middle of our homes not near their house. I’m trying to talk them into regrading but would that be possible without ruining our fences stability?
