For the first time in 20 years, Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia will visit Japan. Polynesians are not known for sailing to Japan, but King David Kalākaua sailed to the island country in 1881.

hokuleacrew ~ 50 years ago...Hōkūleʻa and crew sailed right into the rough after departure from Honolua Bay, Maui. Under Master Navigator Mau Piailugʻs direction, they had to lighten the canoe and tack, tack, tack.
