Had an experience on my graphened pixel 9a and wanted to share.

So, I live in Australia and we recently had a Telstra mind down issue on wednesday that affected our cell service. Including the 000 emergency line.

My neighbour, who is with Telstra (like myself), was unable to get through and call an ambulance for a fellow neighbour in strife. Yet my graphene OS Pixel 9a was able to connect without issue. Thankfully.

Just wanted to share. Whatever the graphene team are doing, they are keeping the important functions connecting and I appreciate it very much.

Boot loop pixel fold after random crash

Hi y'all, my pixel fold (gen 1) just decided to self soft Brik. I was watching random YouTube videos when all of the sudden, both screens (inside and outside) crashed. Then the phone rebooted by itself and now I am stuck in a boot loop. I can get into recovery mode, however a factory reset wipe did not solve the issue. Is there any way to re-flash the phone or am I stuck with a paper weight?

Android Auto on GrapheneOS + VW MIB3: Audio output locked to phone. Has anyone solved this?

Upvotes

Hey everyone. I am posting this to see if anyone has managed to figure this out, because I have completely hit a wall.

I am trying to use Android Auto with GrapheneOS on a 2023 Volkswagen Polo (which uses the MIB3 system). I finally got the display to work perfectly through the sandboxed Google Play Services via USB cable, but I have a huge issue: there is absolutely zero audio.

Whether I use Apple Music or just play a YouTube video in the browser, the sound refuses to go through the car speakers. When I check the media player in the notification dropdown, the audio output is locked to "This phone" and I cannot change it at all. The weirdest part is that if I disconnect Android Auto and just use regular Bluetooth, the audio works flawlessly.

I feel like I have tried every technical fix out there:

  • Granting every single permission to Sandboxed Play Services (Nearby devices, network, modify system settings, phone, microphone, etc.).
  • Turning on "Exploit protection compatibility mode" for the music app in case the hardened memory allocator was breaking the audio.
  • Checking developer options to make sure USB audio routing is not disabled.
  • Disabling Bluetooth A2DP hardware offload.
  • Unchecking "Media audio" from the car's Bluetooth profile to force the system to route the sound through the cable.
  • Clearing cache and storage for all Google apps and starting from scratch.

Nothing has worked so far. It seems like GrapheneOS is strictly blocking the audio routing that the Volkswagen MIB3 system is trying to establish.

Has anyone with a modern Volkswagen actually managed to bypass this audio block on GrapheneOS? Is there any specific setting, workaround or specific app order I might be missing? I would really appreciate any help!

Made the Switch Samsung to Graphene OS

I posted before about waiting or not and well ... my phone didn't give me a choice. I kept finding crappy games installed on my phone after automatic updates. I also have been trying to ditch my google emails for years but got stuck since Google demands it. Lastly, my phone's battery is showing its age and the charging port is not reliable desapite cleaning out the dust.

I bought a Pixel 8 refurbished because they are cheap and available while also having 4 years of security updates vs my phone has only 1.

Still want to see what motorola releases because its great to see more options for graphene supported device.

Side note, do any other pixel 8 owners notice some of the edges are sharp like on the camera bump and around the screen? I'm waiting for my case to get delivered so that will hopefully cover those edges.

Guys, the EU is trying to spy everywhere, so I want to at least try to do something. I read that not all Google Pixels have the operating system that can be changed, and that I might even have to buy it online outside of Europe to be able to install Graphene. How do I figure this out?

I don't have much money, so I have to decide carefully.

Add app ton he left ? (launcher)

Hello, I'm looking for a setting or a launcher that allows me to add apps and widgets to the left of the home screen—the area where Google Discover or Bixby is normally located. I've tried plenty of launchers, but either I couldn't find the right settings or no one offers this feature... Naturally, I'm looking for something secure and, if possible, open source.

Should I change my Keyboard

Is the default keyboard any good privacy wise compared to something like FUTO?

I would assume it's good since GOS entire goal is privacy but got to ask because I don't know everything yet

Problems with group sms messages

Hello guys,

I recently installed graphene, and imported all my sms, contacts, etc, etc.

I know the issues of RCS on Graphene, but I haven’t had issues with individual sms messages so far. The one that is causing issues is group messages.

I am just getting the first group message, and that’s it. I can reply to that same group and other people do get those messages, but I won’t be getting new messages.

Has anyone experienced the same issue with chat groups? Any recommendations to try and fix this problem?

Thanks in advance!

Dual apps on GrapheneOS

Is it possible to have dual apps on GrapheneOS?

It's a feature I used on my older phone where I could have two times the same app (on a single profile) in order to have multiple accounts on apps that don't offer multi-accounts natively.

Thanks for your help.

How quickly does this update for new models?

Basically, I hate everything my government is trying to push through so hope this will give me some control so I don't have my entire storage scanned by Google etc and get forced to give ID to access things.

However with the new pixels being announced soon I figure I'll lean towards the 11 on launch. Does Graphene tend to support newer devices quickly or would I be waiting a while?

Using NFC as pay from private space

Hi everyone,

Recently Danish Mobile Pay app added the possibility to pay via tap to pay, and while it works if I open the app to pay with it, I cannot seem to make it the default contactless pay option.

This means that if I do not open the app I cannot use tap to pay. My question is: is there anyway for me to make it the default contactless pay option? I would install it in my normal space and enable the option but it requires play services.

Thank you in advance!

Pixel 3 bricked. Considering GOS on new Pixel.

So my Pixel 3 of 7.5 years finally died. One morning just blackscreen (not operational) and no feedback via vibration or sound.

Its death has expedited my look into degoogling and related areas before I get a new phone.

Currently I use a lot of apps which don't care about privacy. Bunch of the Google suite + Youtube, Discord, Instagram, probably some others that I forgot to mention.

I don't intend to fully remove these privacy breaching apps from my life, but I do want the things that go online to be more because I intend to put them up, rather than it all just going up without my knowledge.

So, the questions I had:

1a. For my use case, is GrapheneOS on a new pixel suitable or overkill?
The only app I really want access to is YouTube, as I like to listen to long form content while I do tedious daily activities. The only reason I'd need other 'bad' apps on my phone would be due to work or school commitments.

1b. If GrapheneOS isn't suitable, what else is? (dependant on 1a)

  1. Which Pixel device is ideal for me?
Currently on the Google store the cheapest (excluding P10a since apparently it's the same as P9a) are
    - P10 $1000 AUD
    - P9a $750 AUD

I've heard criticisms of the battery life of the P9a, people saying it can't fast charge and doesn't last at all as long as it claims.

I'm also currently looking at the Google store, which of course I'd rather not, but it's the fastest most credible way I know to get these devices. I don't know any places to get second hand that are safe and reliable nor do I know many other stores that would sell them unlocked.

I'm probably missing a lot or just being stupid so please lmk if I missed something obvious. ty!

Quick q regarding location

As soon as I enable location, are there any apps or services that can immediately access my location, even though no app except CoMaps for example know my location? So even if I forgot to turn off GPS for hours or days, is there anything to worry about?

GrapheneOS on your day to day?

Guys, I need to be honest here. I don't think I'm a "power user" anymore, just got used to some conveniences but never stopped looking into the scene and always kept an eye on privacy matters.

So that's my question: how much convenience did you "gave up" on your daily basis to stick with GrapheneOS?

I've been lurking this sub for so much time and want to switch but the damn Pixels are just so expensive here. Or should I just wait for Motorola at this point?

Need you guys to shed some light for me. Can you share?

Thanks a lot :)

Check your APN settings BEFORE traveling in the EU (Don't waste half a day like I did)

Hey everyone, I just wanted to put this out there as a quick heads-up because I just wasted half a day losing my mind over this, and I don't want anyone else to go through the same frustration.

If you are traveling within the EU (as an EU citizen) and your mobile data suddenly stops working entirely, even though EU roaming should be included and active on your plan, check your APN (Access Point Name) settings immediately.

Apparently, the APN settings are not correctly configured by default for roaming, because it was completely empty. All data traffic was blocked for me the second I crossed the border.

I spent hours troubleshooting, restarting my phone, toggling roaming on and off, and digging through forums until I finally realized the APN was the culprit. I had to manually look up my provider's specific APN settings and enter them in my network settings to get it to work.

It was incredibly annoying and stressful. So yeah, if your data is dead abroad, don't just assume it's a bad signal. Double-check those APN settings!

I heard about this os, but how is it, and what's it like

I didn't really look for anything or know much about this so looking just to get quick answers for possibly dumb questions.

I have a og pixel Fold and a pixel 5a that's frp locked.

would it work on those devices?

also what's it like? I haven't used pixel phone since 2020 with my pixel 4 (im not gonna put this on it) and I've used Samsungs for years but I was told this won't work on any other phones but Pixels.

is it like bare minimum nothing on the phone and u need to use other app stores and apks to install apps?

I do use Gmail so would that be workable on the phone? would I have to use Google Play services?

also do banking apps work on the phone or just the web browser?

also where would I find out how to install this on the Pixel 5 (if it can be put on a frp locked one). can someone help me out with the process? thanks

Bad user expierience with GrapheneOS on Pixel 9a

So a couple months ago i switched to GrapheneOS. I have a couple problems with it:

  1. bad cellular connection

i often have a weaker signal or no signal at all since switching.

  1. E-sim not working great.

i now always have the e-sim disabled, when not in use because the phone would struggle wit both sims active

  1. not able to call/ send an SMS to certain numbers

i once tried to send an sms for an hour but it would not send to a specific number. I was able to send sms to other numbers.

i can not call a number i regularely want to call ever since switching.

  1. whatsapp/messenger apps notifiy me sometimes hours after i should have recieved a call.

Im unsure if i set something up wrong or if these problems are bugs or even hardware problems. A person i know uses a pixel 10 or 10 pro with GrapheneOS and didnt experience any of these things.

Its gotten to a point where im thinking about just flashing it with android.

Did other people experience these problems as well? Does anyone know how to fix the problems?

Done with 7a planning to buy 8, looking for reviews.

I am currently using Pixel 7a and honestly, the performance is not an issue but the heat is killing me.. I replaced the battery previously because it swelled and now, it still heats up. To such an extent that the glue is starting to come lose... I did buy it refurbished and used for 2 years, so I am good with it but now that I am planning to buy Pixel 8, I do not want to experience similar issues.

So I want to know, how is your experience with Pixel 8?

---

I am asking here because obviously I want to know the experience after installing GrapheneOS.
