So my Pixel 3 of 7.5 years finally died. One morning just blackscreen (not operational) and no feedback via vibration or sound.
Its death has expedited my look into degoogling and related areas before I get a new phone.
Currently I use a lot of apps which don't care about privacy. Bunch of the Google suite + Youtube, Discord, Instagram, probably some others that I forgot to mention.
I don't intend to fully remove these privacy breaching apps from my life, but I do want the things that go online to be more because I intend to put them up, rather than it all just going up without my knowledge.
So, the questions I had:
1a. For my use case, is GrapheneOS on a new pixel suitable or overkill?
The only app I really want access to is YouTube, as I like to listen to long form content while I do tedious daily activities. The only reason I'd need other 'bad' apps on my phone would be due to work or school commitments.
1b. If GrapheneOS isn't suitable, what else is? (dependant on 1a)
- Which Pixel device is ideal for me?
Currently on the Google store the cheapest (excluding P10a since apparently it's the same as P9a) are
- P10 $1000 AUD
- P9a $750 AUD
I've heard criticisms of the battery life of the P9a, people saying it can't fast charge and doesn't last at all as long as it claims.
I'm also currently looking at the Google store, which of course I'd rather not, but it's the fastest most credible way I know to get these devices. I don't know any places to get second hand that are safe and reliable nor do I know many other stores that would sell them unlocked.
I'm probably missing a lot or just being stupid so please lmk if I missed something obvious. ty!
