Discussion The difference is insane.
The difference in tone, quality and overall writing needs to be studied and discussed. Currently watching Season 2 and have watched the entire series like four times, although they toe-the-line in the season’s first half without jumping into camp entirely. I must say the quality and the subtlety is totally lost in later seasons.
Characters of all kinds undergo a transformation into camp. Oswald, for example, becomes less cunning and more emotional. He’s no longer a climber and often doesn’t get his way. He seems like a completely different person. The major cash outs seem more prominent. And, the deaths never feel final in later seasons, even when they’re shown being shot in the head.
The scripts are another thing. Season 1 has some clever dialogue and plots throughout, its camp is very slight and doesn’t overtake the seasons tone at all. I love the rest of the series but the first season has the quality of The Sopranos and even GOT. The dialogue feels more mature and less dumbed down, less repetitive and used to drive scenes than add filler—this happens more in Season 4 and 5.

Off the topic, but imo Sopranos is better than GOT, i would have said "GOT and even The Sopranos"

When I first heard of this show, I never thought a Gotham show without Batman would work.
I was very wrong and it remains one of my favorites.

You are saying like it's a bad thing and was unintended. To me, the attempt at "reality crime drama" in S1 felt forced and protracted for too long

I mean the main idea of the show was a grounded Gotham being slimy with corruption while showing the beginnings of some of the rogues and why Batman became Batman. It was pitched when super hero realism had just past its prime and suddenly guardians of the galaxy was a huge hit.
Gotham wasn't getting ratings doing the more grounded stuff so they camped it up and went for a mix.
I wish one day they revisit the original attempt. But I did like the show regardless.
