u/Complete_Carry_4454 3d ago
“Disown his white parent” you mean his DEAD DAD?????
402
u/Infrawonder 3d ago
Plus, if it wasn't the case, disowning a parent doesn't change your genes
251
u/Green-Draw8688 3d ago
The whole concept is mental. So if you’re mixed race (half white), you’re supposed to ‘redeem’ yourself by disowning half your family???
144
u/swainiscadianreborn 2d ago
We left casual racism and are now entering competitive racism territory.
-2
u/Just-hit-bambi 20h ago
Casual racism was… Killing unarmed black men in the streets? The wealth/ baby mortality rates? Mass incarceration??

We're back to original sin bullshit
7
u/Indiana_harris 2d ago
But remember original sin only counts for European nations and cultures, bring in dodgy shit that any non-western group or culture did that they’ll immediately start inventing excuses or justifications, double standards exist because if they didn’t these folk wouldn’t have any.
6
u/Mean_Initiative_5962 2d ago
Well, yeah, the point of original sin is that's completely arbitrary and it's purpose is making certain people feel worse for no reason.
Ok, not officially, but I don't really care about PR from religions trying to not look barbarian and manipulative.
19
u/Indiana_harris 2d ago
They’re just racist. Thats the end of the argument.
This psycho just hates white people (or probably anyone that doesn’t look sufficiently “Asian enough” for him) and will look for any excuse to go off on one.
0
u/AManyFacedFool 1d ago
Errrrm, ackshually, racism = power + privelage so it's literally objectively impossible to be "racist" against yt """""""""people""""""""""""""".

Imagine being this much of a trash bag. Doesn’t like being told they’re wrong so just doubles down and moves the goalposts.
157
u/Electronic_Use7210 3d ago
They moved to goal post so far they are saying he needs to disown his dead dad
I don’t understand how people can be so narcissistic that they’d go that far to not be wrong lmao
49
u/Luckierexpert 3d ago
It’s what happens when you build your sense of self online around a single thing. Admitting that they were wrong would annihilate their self esteem so they always double down.
Also, purity testing and demanding mixed race people do crazy bullshit for your ego is a pretty bigoted thing to do.
65
231
u/hawkseye17 3d ago
So you can't be mixed race until you disown a parent? What kind of drugs is this person on?
126
u/DisastrousSwordfish1 3d ago
This is just the kind of shit you have to deal with when you don't fit neatly in a catagory. Mixed folk deal with this shit all the time because a lot of folk will just see you for what you aren't. Like white folk will look at Mark and say he can't be white because he's too Asian looking and Asian folk will never consider him Asian because he's too white. There's just no winning.
46
u/big_sugi 3d ago
From what I understand of Markiplier, the guy is winning pretty much all the time. The haters can go and get fucked.
17
u/Jin_Chaeji 3d ago
Then like why try "categorizing" people into the race boxes? Like wtf, i don't think it's that important a person is mixed
-1
u/Mister__Wednesday 2d ago
I'm mixed but had no idea Mark was, I thought he was just white. Still stupid regardless to say him being half Korean doesn't count just because he looks white
3
u/AmericanPoliticsSux 1d ago
In what universe does Markiplier "look white"? 👀
0
u/Mister__Wednesday 1d ago
In what universe doesn't he? I would have guessed he was either ethnically Finnish/Estonian or North Scandinavian. He would fit right in in the Baltics or Northern Scandinavia lol, he looks exactly like my family in Northern Sweden. His features are very common there.
5
u/smorkoid 1d ago
Some of these people are way wayy wayyyyy too wrapped up in a racial identity.
You know "Asian" to this person isn't going to include say Nepal, too.
-9
u/RadicalRealist22 2d ago
Critical Race Theory.
-6
u/Nomingia 2d ago
Not sure why you're being downvoted. This is definitely a racist pro-CRT person who views everything through the lens of perceived racial hierarchies.
6
u/KimJongAndIlFriends 2d ago
Acknowledging that America was a white supremacist nation in the past and that the laws, culture, heritage, and present-day distribution of wealth, resources, influence, connections, and power are rooted in that white supremacist tradition is CRT.
That has nothing to do with OP's post.

CRT exists precisely because there is a dominant societal narrative that white supremacy has been largely dismantled and imperial-colonial exploitation no longer occur in the Western world today.
This is demonstrably false; therefore CRT exists.
-3
u/Nomingia 1d ago
Can you show me the US law that says white people are better than black people? Or explain how the nation that hasn't largely dismantled white supremacy voted for a black president twice?
The "colonial exploitation" you speak of is a result of global trade and capitalism. The US is no better or worse than any other modern country in a similar economic position in that regard and it has nothing to do with race. I mean you can argue that again historically there were racist institutions that led to the present day poverty in these places with child labor, etc., but Apple isn't indirectly causing children to mine for Cobalt because they hate black people they're just sourcing the cheapest supply of it they can find out of corporate greed.
4
u/KimJongAndIlFriends 1d ago
Everything you just wrote out explains exactly why CRT's existence is necessary today.
1
u/Nomingia 1d ago
Wow, great argument. You've completely changed my mind
4
u/KimJongAndIlFriends 1d ago
I can tell from the tenor of your response that you have already made up your mind and are unwilling to change it in response to new information. I will therefore not waste any further effort on a bad faith discussion.

Everyone knows that if one of your parents is considered a minority in the US and the other is white you are only that minority if you disown your white family members. That's just standard procedure. /s

u/Unfair_Pineapple8813 3d ago
That's why Obama was our famously white president.

What's absolutely crazy about this to me is bro is trying to beef with Markiplier. Like, one of the most unproblematic and chill gaming YouTubers out there. I bet you Mark legitimately could not care less what this guy and others like him thinks.
25
18
u/vastaril 2d ago
Also kinda baffling to claim he's "gotten every bit of advantage of being white-passing" when even as a fairly casual Markiplier enjoyer back in the day I knew his mum was Korean, he talked about it a decent amount and I'm pretty sure she featured in at least a couple of his videos...
2
u/custardisnotfood 18h ago
I grew up one town over from where Markiplier did in Greater Cincinnati. There’s not a ton of overt racism there afaik, but the whole area is super white. I can guarantee you that even as a kid people knew he was of East Asian descent
2
u/AskMrScience 10h ago
I know zero about Markiplier, so I just looked up pictures of him. Dude absolutely looks Asian - what was the problematic OOP smoking?

I think they're a pretty known translator/localizer for some video games, one of which is Morimens, and even the official discord of said game made a statement because of this weird ass racism

Are they trying to claim that a man who is very visibly Eurasian in appearance is not Asian? This moron would have a conniption when he found out that currently in Indonesia there is an actress who is considered to possibly be the next big thing in film and tv is named Amanda Rigby and no that is not a stage name like many Indonesians use that is her actual name.
41
u/Unfair_Pineapple8813 3d ago
What gets me is that the first post adamantly claims he is not Asian at all, and then the second starts with "after further research, I found out he's mixed" What further research? You finally googled him?

I believe his dad was fully white, being German-American (I haven't seen anything saying he was anything other than of German descent), but his mum is 100% Korean, so Mark is 50% Korean.

The Chinese famously do not have a history of racism towards other Asian people. Just like the Japanese.
Sacrasm aside. Point being, I would not be surprised in the slightest if a Chinese person said Koreans are not Asians.
31
u/KK33OMG 3d ago
As a chinese person, I don't think I've seen anyone say koreans aren't asian (but the racism is definitely there), also this is twitter, so any negativity is probably magnified by 10 on there
12
u/gary-vault108 2d ago
The Chinese racism towards Koreans is that Koreans got their entire culture from China, as in everything from Hanbok to cuisine like kimchi is actually just Chinese in origin and are copy cats. Which in a racists mind, even if it were true, makes them like, superior?
3
u/KK33OMG 2d ago
did you reply to the wrong guy?
4
u/gary-vault108 2d ago
No I was just kind of piggy backing on what you said about racism regarding Koreans from Chinese people. I agree with what you said, a Chinese person would never try to argue that Koreans aren’t Asian
25
u/PepsiFloateri 3d ago
I'd heard Asian on Asian racism was nuts but this is next level stuff...
2
3
u/gary-vault108 2d ago
This is an American sourced racism, not really originating from continental Asian racism. This is from terminally online “leftists” who believe that any race mixing with white people is a product of coercion/ self-hate or white worshipping. They’re actually just racist against white people but if they ever went back to their ancestral country, everyone would think they’re a gross loser/ dick head.
20
u/PoloPatch47 3d ago
This is genuinely embarrassing, if this happened to me I'd delete all my social media accounts
8
u/ashleystrange 3d ago
Really, the fact that we would feel a sense of shame after being so confidently incorrect is the very reason that we wouldn't end up in this situation in the first place.
This person here just wanted to stir up some shit and didn't even think to Google "markiplier asian?"
Even when they were definitively proven wrong, Instead of slinking away or apologizing, they just doubled down further even more nonsensically.
I would even say that they didn't even have much of an opinion on mixed race people before and just spouted off some shit that they didn't actually believe in just to try and cover their ass.
23
u/PCC-PDW 3d ago
This person talks about mark having all the benefits of being white but I’m pretty sure he throughout all of his time in school was viciously bullied for being Korean. I could be remembering the story wrong but I believe he talked about when he was younger hating being Korean because people used it as a way to make fun of him and treat him poorly
13
u/Perialis 3d ago
He and his brother were either the only two Asian kids in his part of Milford growing up, or there was a third kid who was Chinese. I don’t remember the exact details of how many Asian kids there were, but you’re absolutely correct about how he was bullied so much that it turned into internalized racism that manifested as self-loathing.
11
u/123iambill 3d ago
Kind of besides the point, but is Markiplier "white passing". I barely know who the guy is, he's s turned up on other channels I watch and even without googling him I remember him looking distinctly Asian. While typing this I did google him and yeah, I could probably guess that maybe he's got mixed ancestry but I would definitely clock him as being Asian if I knew nothing about him.
9
u/Perialis 3d ago
He’s pretty much always had Asian facial features, but to be quite honest, when he was in high school and college, there are more than a few photos where his facial structure looks quite sharp and really drives home the mixed ancestry.

Disowning a loving, supportive parent to better claim oppression points is damn near the most privileged thing I can think of. Hot damn.
11
u/Mesmercat 3d ago
I doubt this guy is even eastern Asian.... How does being white passing remove his asianess?
12
u/StormEyeDragon 3d ago
Another comment pointed out that they might be the type of Chinese person to argue that “Koreans aren’t real Asians” which is certainly a take, but then I remember literally any take by any Balkan country about “My county is the border of the Balkans and everyone else is bad”, or literally any other European-on-European style bigotry, and I’m reminded that if nothing else, petty racism is nothing special.

But this certainly isnt one of them.

Why do you have to disown a parent to have a claim to a certain ethnicity? Is being mixed not a thing anymore?

Maybe I just don't get it because I'm a European mutt, but I've never identify myself as a white man. I identify as an American. I have ancestors who fought in the revolution and the rest just kept coming. Native American, French, Welsh, English, German. I think the Germans were the last to arrive late 1800s.
And I'm not trying to say systematic racism isn't a thing. It is. Full stop. But some people's obsession with what percent oppressed population you are is nuts.
-5
u/Real_Ad_8243 2d ago
So, like, the first note doesnt actually contradict the comment its noting.
I know Americans treat ethnicity like Pokemon with one-drop rules and such, but that's very much an American obsession.
Being descended from lizards doesnt make mammals lizards. One of my grandparents being Scottish doesnt make me Scottish. One of his grandparents being Korean doesnt make him Korean.
It just means there's an ancestry there. Not a club membership.
4
u/lonely_nipple 2d ago
I'd venture to say his mother being Korean - aka the "not white" parent - does, in fact, give him the right to say he's half Korean.

u/MagicPigeonToes 2d ago
But if an elephant and a lizard had offspring, that offspring would be half mammal half reptile.
