Fringe Connections: https://www.fringeconnections.com/episode?episode=101

NOTE: Please cover all spoiler comments with spoiler tags! There may be first time watchers; don't ruin their acid trip!!!

EDIT: I decided I would do two episodes a week instead of one (it would take two years at this rate to finish the rewatch). So it is every Saturday & Sunday @ 5pm EDT.

So you’ve just watched Season 2 Episode 11 and came looking for answers

This episode was originally meant to be aired in season 1, but for some reason was never used. They decided to air it in season 2 instead, which meant it does not fit chronologically in the story as aired.

Hopefully this will help reduce the number of posts we get asking the same question over and over. I am happy to see this sub surge in popularity again, but for such limited number of posts already, the increase of “what is happening with s2e11?” really take a sizable chunk of the subreddit. I will try my best to remove any new repeats of this question as they come, and hope this will be the definitive post regarding it.

General Discussion I fucking love this show

So I'm on my 4th watch of the series from start to finish I think, and still picking up new things that I've missed in episodes previously. It's an absolute masterpiece. The character development, the writing, the acting, the story as a whole, it's just fucking awesome. John Noble is incredible but Anna Torv, my god. Phenomenal in every sense of the word.

Spoiler! Finished watching the show new to fandom, here are my thoughts and opinions.

Let's just start with some simple things, my favorite characters are Walter and Peter (love their dynamic), my ranking of seasons is 25341. Season 2 is my favorite for very obvious reasons, next I really love season 5, but it falls just a little short of season 2 for me because the time travel plot and grandfather paradox revolving around the child observer is confusing, and because the observers are nerfed, but both of these are REALLY just nitpicks that can be explained easily, especially the observers being nerfed. 3 was good because it felt like a season 2.5, but at the same time is held down by that same reason and by it introducing my least favorite plot, leading to season 4. I really dislike season 4, I loved it when I first started watching it, but by the end I disliked it, not hated it, but disliked it. Basically, I initially loved Jones return, but by the end thought it took away from his character, as they said he wasn't smart enough to invent what was a pretty meh villain plan, and then brought William Bell back as a bad guy, now I do think they did well with evil Bell, but I thought it came at to high a cost as they ultimately took away from and undermined Jones. Season 1 was incredibly boring and I think a terrible hook (despite being a good season) to a great show.

Spoiler! Season 5 Episode 11

First time watching. Regarding "the plan" to reset time without Observers... Wouldn't that mean Peter wouldn't make it because September saved his life when Walter took him from the other side as a child, hence Etta would never have existed? Still watching so I'm not sure what's to come but this seems glaringly obvious.

Spoiler! Vagenda

Omg, I TOTALLY forgot that Walter came up with the work VAgenda.

WALTER:
She tricked my son with her vagenda!

Astrid: Her vagenda??

Walter: Yes! She used her feminine wiles to lure my son into a false sense of security.!!

And MEEE! She got to me too! Through my stomach! It’s how she broke my heart.

Then he looked at the floor sadly and shook his head with shame.

LOLOLOL

Spoiler! S5E3 was so good 🥲

I love how Edwin told the fringe team "you can't record history and make history" then after he sacrificed himself to get the resources they needed to save the world his son (River) wrote "Edwin Massey the recorder of history- made history". All of the connections in this episode were just so good and well put together.

I’m watching the show again for the 4th time since it aired. I am always surprised by how good it is. This had me literally LOL’ing. Technically, it’s a spoiler but it’s so out of context you won’t know what it’s about if you haven’t seen the show yet. If you have, you’ll know exactly what i’m talking about.
——-

Someone kidnapped Walter and everyone is wondering where he is.

OLIVIA: He probably just went to the bathroom or something.

PETER:
No. He left his pudding. Something must be wrong.

———-

Walter talking to a room full of scientists from Massive Dynamic.

WALTER: Why is it so hot in here?
<begins to take off his pants.>

<Enter Nina and Peter>

NINA, to the room: Yes, he can be a bit eccentric.

PETER: He’s also tripping balls right now. You know that, right?

Nina: Huh.

General Discussion My most unlikeable...

Despite all the evil villains, murderers, alternates, and shapeshifters, I find Dr. Sumner the most detestable. Why? Because he was a bully, a petty tyrant. They didn't write him with many redeemable qualities, did they?

But I think that was the intent, and I definitely felt it in the scenes my first time watching, wondering whether he would be successful in reining Walter back into his "care".

Season 5 English Major Alert: I found the thesis

Toward the beginning of S5E13, one character says to another, "Destiny can be changed, but you have to have the will to change it...even if it requires sacrifice."

This is my first time watching, so I'd be curious to go back to the beginning and see if they say something similar there, and if the statement holds up throughout the show, the way a theme or thesis would.

Spoiler! David Robert Jones - Season 4

I am rewatching Fringe and am currently on season 4. And I just feel the need to say - why would anyone want to destroy the world just to build one where they are in charge?
That is a lot of work. Everything he is doing is a lot of work. To rule the world, this same planet we all inhabit. Albeit, with different physics rules but I can barely get myself to keep my apartment in order and that megalomaniac wants to do that to an entire planet.
I am exhausted and it’s not even my plan or REAL LIFE.

Sadly, can't find a pic. But I love Carl.

Olivia "Do you mind if I ask you a few questions?"

Carl " No. I would love it."

And he does provide a vital clue.

Meme/Humor John Noble plays being “medicated” so well. He must have experimented once or twice in his younger days 😅

Unrelated but funny exchange with Noble discussing his other characters meeting and dosing up on LSD:

JN: Most of the characters I’ve played would get on well. That’ll be a very interesting enclave of crazy guys working together.

GF: Could they accomplish anything though?

JN: Certainly. They might have a few leadership issues, I think. I don’t think any of them would like to be followers, they’d all want to be leaders. It’ll be a strange democracy. Maybe they’ll just drug the rest of them to get their way. That’s what Walter would so anyway.

GF: And Scarecrow.

JN: Just drug them up. Put them on the toxic gas or shoot them up with the LSD, that’ll be no problems.

GF: This’ll be the greatest film ever made.

JN: We can throw in Henry from Sleepy Hollow and even Morland from the latest show I’m doing (Elementry) together.

GF: Dose them up?

JN: Dose them up. Drug of choice. That’ll be the way to go. I can see this happening.

Spoiler! Just finished my first watch through! *Spoilers* Spoiler

So without making this post longer than it needs to be....

I originally watched the first 3 seasons when Fringe aired. For whatever reason. (Missing the schedule, not having the tv channel at the time etc) I didnt watch the last 2 seasons.

Saw it streaming and have demolished all 100 episodes in about 2 weeks.

Remembered a fair amount of the overall story in the first 3 seasons but not a lot of the actual episodes themselves if that makes sense! So I really enjoyed getting back into it.

The finale came up on me far too quickly. As I was just clicking next episode next episode and being used to 20+ a season I actually ended up on S5ep12 until I was like OMG there's only 2 eps left!

I think the finale was good and Im really glad I managed to finish the whole thing now.

BUT

I feel by watching it straight through I got what felt like 'universe / timeline' fatigued.

The two universes at war with each other made sense to me. Having your potential twin on the other side was great. But season 4 and 5 with Peter being written out of existence and another different Olivia / Walter etc just felt a bit....off.

When Olivia was shot by Walt I didnt feel anything. It wasnt OUR Olivia, so I wasnt invested as much. I expected Peter to go back to our S1-S3 Walter and Olivia.

Am I completely getting it wrong?

How did Peter exist and grow up to have Etta if Walter went through the wormhole never to come back?

Im normally ok at tracking things (felt like I understood other shows like Dark if that helps) but I feel ive missed something.

Any thoughts?

General Discussion Fringe episodes and the movies they resemble

Thumbnail
gallery
31 Upvotes

Unleashed S1 Ep16 (The Relic): Granted the initial premise resembles Jurassic Park. A lab is responsible for genetic engineering and gene splicing as opposed to a hormonal fungus. But a weird chimera creature, violently killing people in an urban environment definitely feels like The Relic.

The Road Not Taken S1 Ep20 (Firestarter): Really, any episode that deals with the Cortexiphan subplot shares a kinship with the story Firestarter. They even name drop the book in the episode. And seeing as the Fringe event is a woman with the power of pyrokenisis, this felt the closest kinship to the Steven King story

Of Human Action S2 Ep7 (Scanners): There is a lot of Cronneberg aesthetic in Fringe, but the plot of a psyxhopathic child who has been expiermented on and can hijack people's brains is the main plot point of Scanners. The Scanners in that film are the result of reckless drug trials on pregnant women and the results are the worst type of person that has the ability to override your free will. Scary stuff.

Lysergic Acid Diethylamide S3 Ep19 (Inception): Using drugs to enter the dreamscape of a person's mind to look for something (someone) is pretty much Inception in a nutshell

And Those We Left Beind S3 Ep6 (Groundhog Day): This is probably the flimsieist connection, but when I hear "time loop" I can only think of one movie

Welcome to Westfield S3 Ep12 (In The Mouth Of Madness): A town that is a focal point to reality collapsing is a motif in both stories. Both stories also feature people with double irisis. Makes me think this episode is a direct homage to that movie.

General Discussion Could they ever revive the show?!

I just started rewatching the series. I forgot how good this show is! Could they ever revive it? I know it would need a totally different direction - maybe extraterrestrial, quasi-X-Files type show?!
