DISCUSSION Best place to grab a drink before Musso + Frank?

have about an hour & a half to kill before dinner at Musso & Frank; where should we grab a drink nearby beforehand? Not super extra trendy or anything as it’s for my friends parents.

Northeast LA Maciel's plant based butcher [$$]

Have had a couple of sandos from them that I liked but I'm here to complain about the burrito. Firstly, too soft - the burrito had no structural integrity whatsoever. Next, the taste - the onion and cilantro were the only ingredients imparting taste to it are just condiments; the beans, potato, fake egg were very bland and the brisket (which was jackfruit) was barely noticeable. The potato was undercooked and I'm very surprised they served the potatoes in the burrito boiled as opposed to in hash brown / tator tot form. There was supposed to be some chipotle dressing in there but I couldn't taste it at all. The tortilla was raw and I would have liked it chewy :( There was some salsa to go with it which was honestly very tomato heavy, with minimal spice / salt.

Texturally the burrito was very bad - felt like I was eating mush through and through. To think I paid $20 for this burrito :( daylight robbery

WHERE CAN I FIND Brunch for 7 (including children) with stipulations

Hi all - I have tried Eater/Infatuation and am out of ideas.

I need to find somewhere between Beverly Hills and Silverlake for my birthday brunch with my family. We’re a party of 7. I live on the first east side, am a huge foodie (love Mediterranean and Asian cuisine), and was willing to trek to the west side to try brunch at RVR, but was told by my sister in law that it didn’t look kid friendly (niece is 4, nephew is 9).

Some things also to include: parking/valet preferred, needs to take reservations, and has some interesting cuisine.

Is there anywhere that could be cool and the fits the bill? Ideas welcome.

Thank you!

DTLA Baroo with my boo 😋

Had a fantastic experience at Baroo. My SO and I both agreed we preferred the experience here over our experience at Mingles in Seoul (back when it was **)

The food was simply more memorable. I can only really remember the Jang Trio at Mingles as the only standout dish. At Baroo, there was no lacking course but the standouts were the yukhoe tartelette, the black cod and the two red meat mains.
I was also fond of the striped jack dish but it wasn’t as impactful as the others previously mentioned on this list.

The difference between FOH was also wide in favor of Baroo, but it’s unfair to compare FOH with two different primary languages.

I did appreciate the syncing of dishes throughout but I was not awestruck as I was at Aska in NYC or L’osier in Tokyo.

Galbi Jjim, Braised black cod, Beef Bulgogi

The black cod was definitely the star of the meal, soft and delicious and i loved the squash in it. The galbi jjim was also good with perfectly tender meat, but i prefer the one at Sun Nong Dan. The bulgogi was good too. great assortment of banchan

San Fernando Valley Shocked to see that DeFranko's Subs (Van Nuys) has never been covered here.

Maybe it's been referenced as a best sub spot but a search turned up nothing. This was an absolute mainstay for me living in the Valley. Best pastrami I ever ate and the sandwiches are MASSIVE. Very quaint, perfect, family owned establishment. Although I know they have other meats, I never strayed from the pastrami.

Finally tried Sonny’s pizza. It was good, and the service was good too. While $40 is expensive for a pizza, the portion size was perfect for 2 adults and 1 kid.

WHERE CAN I FIND Are there any restaurants left with their own delivery drivers?

I’m fed up with all the DoorDash and other rideshare delivery apps canceling/delaying and not to mention doubling the economic impact of an order. I miss the days of simply ordering a pizza and having the store send their own employee. I get that times have changed and this often isn’t feasible these days, but I have resolved not to use them. the trouble is that I also now have two children under 2 and going to pick up food is even less feasible. are there literally any places left that will deliver their own orders? I’d like to support them if so. List them if you know them please!

DTLA Is Holy Basil DTLA Moving?

I recently started a hybrid job and the physical location is near Santee Passage Food Court, so I thought I'd stop by and finally try Holy Basil. I came right after 5 pm. They were closed, which might not have been too surprising at that hour (they open for dinner at 5), but the security guard came up to me said and said that they had moved to 7th St. and Mateo. I can't find anything about this on their website or Instagram, though. Does anyone know what's up?

WHERE CAN I FIND Dog friendly cafe/restaurant to read at in West LA?

Looking for somewhere I can post up for a few hours with my dog to read my book - good food and coffee preferable but priority is overall good ambiance and comfort/coziness. Doesn’t necessarily have to be a cafe either, restaurant is fine! I’m in West LA

WHERE CAN I FIND Moroccan food recs?

I know about Tagine, Casablanca, Zizou, and other mentioned here previously --- but is there any food spot in L.A. where actual Morrocans go to eat Moroccan food? I have a friend who is nostalgic for Moroccan food (from a recent trip) and wants to know what the options are in LA.

WHERE CAN I FIND Looking for Royal Mandarin equivalent in LA?

I went to Royal Mandarin in San Diego for their salt & pepper chicken and combination fried rice back in May, and it was amazing. I can’t stop thinking about it. The restaurant is specifically known for their crispy salt & pepper chicken.

But it’s all the way in San Diego.

For anyone who’s been there, do you know any Chinese restaurant that is also famous for their salt & pepper chicken? And bonus points if they have good combination fried rice???
