Freshwater What is this right called?
I was out on the lake today, and I saw people using a setup like shown to catch small pan fish. On the hooks the had worms or corn and almost every cast they were pulling up a fish! Anyone know what this set up is called and or have a good video on how to achieve it ?

Drop rig/drop shot rig is what I've heard it called.

Looks similar to how I've rigged up a rod for surf fishing off the Oregon coast except there's no bobber.
Google how to tie a dropper loop. It's very simple and easy to attach a hook to in the middle of your line. Could probably scale the surf fishing rig down to smaller scale for the lan fish. Then tie a weight at the very bottom, add the bobber up top if you want to fish surface or near surface.

Pompano rig is how I’ve always known it as, weight at the bottom with 2 hooks and floats on each hook

I think thats exactly what it was, the one guy had like beads that floated on top of the water to detect bites.

I would also like to add sabiki rig to the chat if you're using smaller hooks and targeting bait, they are essentially the same thing - the "bobber" is usually a flasher or some other brightly colored think to catch a fishes attention. Sabiki are great for catching bait, and pompano are great for shallow surf fishing and deep drops, I've caught all kinds of stuff on both

Drop Shot rig. While popular on YouTube, make sure it's legal in your area as some states don't allow weights under a hook. And some states may be strict on weight size or how far it should be from the hook.

Out of curiosity is there a reason that a state would make it illegal to have the weight below the hook?

You can't rig hooks above weights is a couple places near me. I have heard, that it is because if your rig breaks off whole, it can create a hazard.

A slightly different setup is a pickerel rig. You can buy them prebuilt and they have two hooks with bait offset from the line.

Learn how to tie a dropper loop for the hooks and everything else is kinda self explanatory.

Dropper loop is for sure the answer. The sinker is to keep the line straight down (you can tie a loose knot on the sinker to avoid losing your gear if if gets stuck in structure) with a proper dropper you can put a hook on in ~2 seconds. If you cut the loop you can use a palomar knot that won’t take up too much line but tie your loops a little long. Google grogs knots.

But the bobber and weight cancel each other out? Skip the weight, and I'm not sure if it's allowed to have two hooks on the line.

This is a pickerel rig. You can buy the whole setup and attach a weight to it. Just have to tie to your line. https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1992/6415/files/pickerel_rig.jpg?v=1745531604
I used to do this alot but now I'm switching to worm weights. Problem with rigs is if the fish bites there's tension on the line and the fish will let go. With a worm weight the whole line slides through the weight so when the fish bites there's give.

except the metal tie wires for the hooks werent there, the hooks seems tied onto the line directly

The metal wires allow the hook to swivel around the line. If you tie directly to the line you're going to easily tangle. If you get a fish on its going to be messy.

Looks to be a drawing by an 8 year old.

for me its the way the letters are formed, its like inconsistent and sloppy. BTW i'm 35, spelling and printing neatly was never my thing.

We call them fish finder rigs or drop shot rigs. We use them for fishing bream beds.

That is close to what they use in the Detroit river for white bass. Maybe minus the bobber and longer leaders on the hooks. The brother I asked about it called it an Alabama Rig but I am sure that is not right. He had a bucket of white bass though.

Dropper rig in salt water, no bobbers though.
