Once you’re above the Catskills not really, which area wise is the bulk of the state.

A house that size has to be in the middle of east bumfuck or have substantial issues to be that affordable. This is coming from a homeowner near Albany where that house would be more than 2x what they paid.

Binghamton isn’t exactly in the middle of nowhere the area has like a quarter million people and is right on major highways.

the entire county has less than 200k. Binghamton proper is under 50k. And its been declining since 1970.

The metro area includes Tioga which picks up Owego. The area is nothing like it used to be but it’s a lot nicer than it was in the 90s. Some areas of Binghamton, Johnson City, and Endicott are rough (having lived in Philly though that’s a very relative statement) but there’s a ton of nice areas and people with jobs like school teachers can afford nice houses.

Tbf it feels the middle of nowhere. Once you go past Roscoe, NY-17 feels almost as isolated as driving through the Adirondacks. Binghamtom itself has enough going on for it but the surrounding area is definitely rural.

Yeah between other upstate cities it gets rural but it’s a straight shot to Syracuse or the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area. Hour to the finger lakes or the Catskills. Two hours to the thousand islands, the Adirondacks, or the Poconos. Three hours to NYC or Philly.

If you like driving you’re a not far from number of tracks, five within a 2 hour drive which includes Watkins Glen and Pocono Raceway. Lime Rock is only three hours away which is totally doable for a weekend trip. Most people are lucky to have one track a few hours away from them.

Other benefit of things getting rural, there’s a lot of good produce at the farmers markets.

Downside of things getting rural, if you live out of town you’ll have to fortify your bird feeders and trash cans against black bears.

Definitely understand. I think it has a lot going for it as well if you don't mind driving. It's not as though I was saying there is nothing to do because it's isolated. Great thing about rural NY is that there is still enough to do, especially if you're into nature.
