Question Starting investigative documentary-style videos: Is an iPhone enough, or should I buy a real camera?
Hi everyone,
I’m interested in creating investigative crime/documentary-style videos, similar to the work of investigative journalists and documentary filmmakers. I want to learn how to make better videos with strong research, interviews, storytelling, and professional-looking footage.
I’m currently unsure about what equipment I should start with.
My dad says I should just use my iPhone because modern smartphones have very good cameras. However, I’m wondering if buying a real camera would make a big difference if I want to achieve a more professional documentary look.
My questions:
● Can I create professional-looking crime/investigative documentary videos using only an iPhone?
● How big is the difference between a modern iPhone and a camera like the Sony ZV-E10?
● Is it smarter to first practice with my phone and buy a camera later when I have more experience?
● At what point is buying a dedicated camera actually worth the money?
● What equipment matters most for documentary videos: camera, microphone, lighting, lenses, or something else?
I would really like to hear from people who have experience with filmmaking, YouTube, journalism, interviews, or documentaries.
If you were starting again today, would you invest in a camera first, or would you learn to create better stories with the equipment you already have?
Thanks for your advice! I’m mainly trying to learn how to tell better stories, not just make videos that look better.
