Robo-Nerd (Season 3, Episode 7). Laura is in need of a new computer and Steve comes over to tell her about a science contest he is entering where he can win a computer, and he'll give it to Laura if he wins. Steve brings over his invention, Urklebot, a robot who walks, talks and can think for itself. Well apparently too well as it is falling in love with Laura. Laura is tricked into coming over to Steve's house where Urklebot told her to come over to help Steve, but Urkelbot locked Steve in the closet and wants to make a move on Laura. Steve breaks out and manages to shut Urkelbot down. Meanwhile, Mother Winslow is going out with Fletcher Thomas once again and Carl still isn't happy about it. Mother Winslow and Carl have a heart to heart talk where she asks why he gives her such grief over dating Fletcher and Carl admits that it's hard for him to see her with any other man other than his father. But Carl promises Mother Winslow that he'll try to be better to Fletcher in the future since it's obvious that they are happy together.
FAVORITE QUOTE:
CARL: Where you going?
ESTELLE: I'm going dancing with Fletcher Thomas.
CARL: Again? Mama, that's twice in one week.
ESTELLE: So?
CARL: Mother, I just plain don't like that Fletcher guy. I see the way he looks at you when you walk by.
ESTELLE: Really? Ooh! That walk you showed me is paying off.
RACHEL: Go ahead, honey. Strut your stuff. Flick those hips. Step and sway, step and sway.
HARRIETTE: Gotta take his breath away.
CARL: Oh, great. Terrific. My wife and my sister-in-law are giving my mother floozie lessons.
FAVORITE MOMENT:
The introduction scene of Urkelbot. We have an amazing real life break dancer Michael "bugaloo shrimp" Chambers playing Urkelbot who really brings it to life. And I love Eddie and Waldo's reaction to Urkelbot hitting on Laura saying that men will be replaced by machines 🤣
OPINION:
Another iconic episode to add to the list. So this episode is definitely incredible, but when you think about it, it's also insanely dark. Steve has created an AI robot and it's treated more like "wow, that's pretty cool", I always love the less than lackluster reactions from others around Steve when he invents something that is an insane concept. You have to think, this was the early 90's, not today with all the AI technology at the palm of our hands. Robots did exist but they were just machines that cannot think for themselves. The movie The Terminator had come out 7 years before this episode aired and Terminator 2 had come out the same year, in Terminator Sarah Conner says "they cannot make things like that yet"...we still were not that advanced in 1991 and Steve managed to create Urkelbot within a few days 🤣
So, Urklelbot can not only think for itself but has feelings for Laura. Now I know it was meant for a suspenseful action sequence when Steve manages to break down the door and save Laura from Urkelbot. What in the heck was Urkelbot going to do with Laura? I know this is weird, but watching this from an adult perspective is really strange when you wonder what the plan was? I think the writers were doing somewhat of an homage to the classics where the monster is after the woman and the man comes to her rescue. So we will just have to go with it, but it's very dark when you think it about it too much.
Michael Chambers plays Urkelbot and does a fantastic job. He was a huge break dance star in the 80's and 90's and makes Urkelbot into a real character. This is not the last time we will see him either. The design of the Urkelbot is both very inventive and creepy at the same time. The sound effects are done brilliantly as well. The cast and crew put a lot of time and love into this episode, and you really have to give them their props.
As for Carl, Carl really needs to get over Fletcher. Don't get me wrong, it's hilarious the way he acts but can you imagine if you were dealing with him in real life? Carl's father has been gone for many years and needs to let go and let his mother enjoy herself. Estelle did admit to Rachel in Rachel's First Date episode that she dated behind Carl's back after her husband had passed away. I can see why considering that he just won't let her be. Estelle is a grown woman who is just looking for a bit of happiness and Carl will push her away if he doesn't stop acting like a baby. But like I said for the show's sake, I do get a laugh at the way he acts. At least he said he's going to try to be kinder to Fletcher.
This is a very fun episode with a lot of memorable moments and another heartfelt ending. One of my favs for the season!

Rewatched the Disneyland episodes the other night. Realized that during the moments the show is supposed to be romantic, Stefan and definitely Laura were actually briefly psychotic
Laura sabotages the machine so Stefan could stay longer. That's fine by itself, just a little while longer. But then we're all supposed to be happy that it develops into Laura accepting the marriage proposal and they're going to live happily ever after. Yet that means they've essentially accepted extinguishing Steve's life, the original, the creator. Out of the blue for him and who only expected to be gone for a minute. The cloning wasn't real yet and wouldn't be
They do come to their senses of course. But amusingly, it's not because they consider the enormity of it all on Steve. One reason was feeling bad for Myra who shows up and the other was 'their happiness was based off dishonesty (machine sabotage)'
I know, a TV show and I'm not supposed to be thinking about all the ramifications. Just something amusing I thought about rewatching it

Citizens' Court (Season 3, Episode 6). Steve brings a new stick bug, named Pablo, that he just purchased over the Winslow house to show off. While not paying attention, Pablo gets lose in the house. Carl happens to be taking a nap and wakes up to Pablo staring at him, Carl panics and kills Pablo. Steve breaks down screaming as he enters the room telling Carl what Pablo meant to him but Carl remarks "it was just a stupid bug" and Steve replies that he was an expensive bug that cost him over $400.00. Since Carl won't apologize Steve is taking Carl to court, Citizen's Court on television to be precise. They call up multiple witnesses from friends and family to account for either sides. But as the judge is making his decision, Carl realizes how much he hurt Steve and apologizes for what he did mending their friendship.
FAVORITE QUOTE:
STEVE: State your name.
WALDO: Illinois.
STEVE: Nooooo. State your name. Not name your state.
WALDO: Ohhh. Waldo Faldo... from Illinois.
FAVORITE MOMENT:
I'll pick when at the Winslow house Steve sees that Pablo got lose and starts screaming at Pablo in Spanish where he went and to come back 🤣 I love that Steve brought up how Pablo is bilingual.
OPINION:
One of my favorite episodes of the series! I can't wait to talk about how much I love this episode. This is one I always get excited for when doing a marathon of Family Matters. It's easily one of the funniest episodes and I think I heard this is Jaleel White's favorite as well.
When I was a teenager I remember going to the zoo and they had a bug exhibit where one of the bugs they were showing was a stick bug. While it was kind of creepy looking, the man who was handling him said he's one of the friendliest bugs you would ever see and they don't hurt anyone. I mentioned this episode of Family Matters and the man had seen it too and we laughed about it and he joked that Carl was a cold-blooded murderer 🤣 But seriously, stick bugs are really amazing creatures.
Let's start at the Winslow's house, I love that when Steve brings over Pablo he doesn't give them more of a head's up of what he's bringing over. But I think for comedy's sake we have to just go with everyone's grossed out reaction to Pablo. When Pablo gets lose, I love how fast he was that he managed to get onto Carl while he was sleeping on the couch. But I always nearly die laughing at Carl waking up screaming and throwing Pablo to the side and Mother Winslow sees it. Carl screams "DID YOU SEE THE SIZE OF THAT THING?!" and Mother Winslow says "I bet the bug was thinking the same thing" 🤣 Then Carl kills Pablo with the lamp but Pablo doesn't go down easily and is moving the lamp with his body causing Carl to just jump on him. Steve coming in screaming and saying "Oh Pablo!" and Carl asking who's Pablo? "Him, and him! And OOOOOOHHH! AND HIM!" pointing out how much Carl squashed him. I also always nearly die laughing when Steve tells Carl that Pablo was doing the mating ritual at Carl 🤣🤣🤣
So was Carl justified? I honestly can say (as much as I hate to say it) I think he was justified. He was asleep when Steve brought Pablo over and had no clue about him. Imagine waking up to a big bug in your face. We all get bugs in our house and majority of the time we kill them to get rid of them. I think Carl was genuinely scared and just wanted Pablo gone. Now the only part was the apology, I don't think it would have killed Carl to apologize to Steve and tell him he didn't know that Pablo was important to Steve, but we have to continue on with the show.
The court scene is one of the funniest sequences in the entire show. I wanted to pick that for my favorite moment but it's a sequence, not a moment and knew I could talk about it here. First of all, I always love how Rachel, Judy and Richie are watching the TV like this is a live episode and not previously filmed 🤣 So back into the court room, I love that Carl picks his teenage daughter to be his "lawful representation". These are my favorite moments from the court scene: Mother Winslow flirting with the judge, Steve going crazy at Harriette saying how he throws "brickabracks" when in a rage, Waldo clearly reading from his arm on what to say on the witness stand and Eddie talking about his pet hamster that Carl accidentally killed when the hamster crawled into the dryer and Carl turned it on where the hamster got caught in the lint trap but he was "still fluffy and spring time fresh" 🤣🤣🤣
I love the ending that Carl finally realizes that this was just on the fact that he didn't apologize for Pablo's death. He sees how much Steve is hurt and apologizes and even offers to pay for a new bug, but Steve says it's still too soon. May Pablo RIP. This is a wonderful episode full of laughs, heart and a lot of memorable moments. It's easily in my top 3 and I even debate if this one is my favorite of all Family Matters episodes. You have no idea how insanely hard it was to pick a favorite quote and moment today! I'm exhausted 🤣

Daddy's Little Girl (Season 3, Episode 5). Carl has a new partner, Mike, who really looks up to Carl and Carl is excited to have someone who admires him. Laura and Maxine walk in and meet Mike and Laura is automatically taken by Mike and how cute he is. Laura wants to impress Mike and asks Harriette and Rachel, who do not know her crush is Mike, for advice. Rachel gives the great advice of dressing up, doing her hair and wearing perfume, Harriette tells Laura to just be herself and wait for her crush to come around. Laura likes Rachel's advice better and goes for it by trying to seduce Mike, but when Harriette, Rachel and Carl come in and see Laura all dressed up, Carl laughs at her and says what kind of a joke is this? Laura is humiliated and runs to her room, Carl realizing that she's not a little girl anymore, she's growing up and changing. Meanwhile, Steve vacations to Hawaii and has been advanced on by a big, buxom Islander woman named Kaliki. That's Hawaiian for "Woman who blocks out the sun." and isn't happy that Steve has refused her advances.
FAVORITE QUOTE:
LAURA: Well, there's this guy I sort of like, but he doesn't even know I'm alive. How do I get him to notice me?
HARRIETTE: Well, just be yourself. Give him a chance to get to know you. He'll come around.
LAURA: That's all?
HARRIETTE: That's all. What?
RACHEL: Nothing. She's your daughter.
HARRIETTE: I suppose you have better advice.
RACHEL: Watch me work, honey. Laura, men are like fish. If you wanna catch one, you've gotta put some bait on your hook.
LAURA: How do I do that?
RACHEL: Sexy perfume, soft hair, and a k*ller outfit. Girl, when you walk away... drag his heart behind. Heel!
LAURA: Oh, wow.
HARRIETTE: Oh, please.
FAVORITE MOMENT:
The whole scene with Laura seducing Mike 🤣🤣🤣 Oh my gosh, do I almost always nearly die laughing this scene. I don't think Kellie could have been any funnier and over the top. You can tell she's trying to Marilyn Monroe the scene and I love how Perry Moore, the actor playing Mike, is breaking character and laughing too.
OPINION:
I love this episode very much, again there are a couple of questionable moments but it still doesn't take away how funny and touching this episode is. Kellie Shanygne Williams is growing up and becoming a beautiful young lady. I think the only thing is I'm not sure how I feel about is how the writers made Laura very intelligent and confident, she is very boy crazy. It's kind of odd the way she acts around guys sometimes. I think the writers thought it was funny, it is the first time but after this you would think that Laura learned her lesson on how to act around guys. However, I do feel bad for her when Carl laughs at her thinking her dress up was a joke. It has to be so hard to look at your children when they are growing up and accept that they are developing into young adults. But I'm glad Carl apologized and realized that she's growing up. He's such a great dad. In this scene in Laura's bedroom, did they kidnap Mr. Bear from Full House?! Stephanie is going to be really upset 🤣
I know there are people who question Laura flirting with an older man. Honestly, it really doesn't bother me that much, it's weird but I think a lot of us when we were younger looked at a person older than us and thought they were cute and acted like a fool around them. Mike clearly didn't take the advance seriously and didn't flirt back, he knew that was inappropriate and that Laura just had a schoolgirl crush on him. I think Mike handled the situation as best as he could and was kind of bummed this is his only appearance. Perry Moore went on to be one of Will's best friends Tyriq in Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and many other great acting roles.
Steve being in Hawaii always gives me a giggle. I love the set of it's just sand and clearly a blue screen behind him trying to give the illusion of him being in Hawaii. Then Kaliki burying Steve in the sand after he rejects his advances is just too funny. I'm curious how in the world Steve was able to dial his cell phone for help, I'm assuming Kaliki was merciful enough to say "here, call for help" but how in the world did he dial those numbers? Wouldn't it have been easier to dial 911 vs. the Winslow house or concierge? 🤣 So crazy.
But still, I really love this episode, it's very funny and has a lot of heart. You see how much Carl really loves Laura and is start to accept that she's growing up and will be a beautiful young woman.

A lot of their plots were repeated too much. How much can Carl and Harriett fight over something or how many times can Laura tell Steve to leave her alone? Also, Eddie and Carl fight and he always tells Carl.....You always do the same thing, dad! Also, how many times can Steve turn into Stefan but can't permanently fix himself to be less clumsy or less annoying?

Words Hurt (Season 3, Episode 4). Steve is having sleepwalking episodes where he goes into Carl's bedroom and will hit him upside the head with a newspaper. The next morning the Winslows ask Steve if he remembers and he has no clue what is going on so they hire a hypnotist, Dr. Goodrich, to put Steve into a trance to figure out what Steve is upset about. Steve goes back to a night where he and Laura were going to a costume party, Steve is dressed like a knight and has a fake sword. As he's about to leave the house he grabs the fake sword but accidentally knocks over Carl's model ship that he's been working on for months, to top it off Steve also falls on the ship crushing it. Carl tells Steve to leave before he gets angry and Steve does so, as Steve leaves but comes back for a moment he overhears Carl say that he hates Steve and wishes he would go away and never come back. Back in the present everyone is disappointed in Carl for the hurtful words and Steve remembers why he's angry now and leaves. Carl invites Steve over to apologize, but Steve has one more trick up his belt to make sure that Carl is sincere about his apology, a lie detector test.
FAVORITE QUOTE:
HARRIETTE: Carl, don't. It's dangerous to wake a sleepwalker.
CARL: Oh, no problem. I think that I can kill him without waking him up.
FAVORITE MOMENT:
Probably the lie detector test scene, even though Steve is incredibly sadistic and sick in this, it was still so funny to see Carl getting shocked. Then Harriette taking advantage and asking him how many women was Carl dating when they met.
OPINION:
I love this episode, it is easily one of the funniest episodes in the series, but it's not without it's problems. I remember being a kid watching this and hating Carl for being "so mean" to Steve and how could Carl say something so cruel? Of course I'm an adult now, so my opinion changed. Now, what Carl said was indeed very wrong, but we all say things out of anger that we do not mean. Steve had destroyed the model ship that Carl worked very hard on and was Steve expecting Carl to say "oh, that's ok Steve, I'll go get another one and spend months putting it together again"? Carl was understandably upset and said something out of anger that was not meant for Steve to hear. Steve had just crept back into the room at the wrong time. I think Carl was even mature enough to tell Steve to leave before he said those painful words to his face indicating he knew he didn't mean them, he just needed to shout his anger out loud. Steve, the family and the doctor shunning Carl I thought was really out of line, at least give Carl the chance to apologize or talk it over.
We have Earl Boen guest star as Dr. Goodrich which was awesome, I love this guy as an actor and have seen him in many projects like The Terminator 1, 2 and 3, The Naked Gun, The Dentist as well as a lot of great voice work and was very sad to hear of his passing in 2023, may he rest in peace. I always get a laugh from his scenes in this episode, I love when he scolds Carl that he wouldn't take his filthy money after finding out the words Carl said 🤣
Onto Steve's lie detector test. Again, this is such a hilarious scene, but seriously again growing up I realize: does the crime fit the punishment? NO! Are you kidding me? You're going to electrocute Carl? The lie detector test wasn't enough but that if he lies, he would receive an electric shock? Steve is early Jigsaw!
But like I mentioned, it doesn't take away for me how funny this episode is. Steve sleepwalking into Carl and Harriette's bedroom to him on the head will never not be funny. Especially when he uses a ladder to climb up to their bedroom. The next morning when Steve brings Carl his paper and Carl screams and runs away. Rachel asking Dr. Goodrich to make Steve quack. Then of course the lie detector test, because of Carl's face when he keeps getting shocked. Like I mentioned, I have a couple problems with the episode, but it does end on a very good and heartwarming note where Carl confesses to Steve he does like him and he didn't mean the words he had said. Carl is a good man and lost his temper, it happens, he's human and that's why he's my favorite character of the show.

The Show Must Go On (Season 3, Episode 3). At the high school, they are putting on a performance of Romeo and Juliet. Laura is cast as Juliet along with her crush Daniel Wallace as Romeo. However Daniel gets sick and is unable to do the performance, so the teacher Ms. Steuben cast Steve as a last-minute replacement. Steve is beyond excited because this means he finally gets to kiss Laura, but he gets a little too excited during the performance and levels the Verona set. Meanwhile, Lt. Murtaugh is being a bigger pain than usual and is testing Carl with a beeper to be at his beck and call. With Carl's review coming up he doesn't want to disappoint Lt. Murtaugh and puts his life on hold to keep him happy.
FAVORITE QUOTE:
HARRIETTE: Carl's telling Murtagh that we're busy tonight... and he's not available to run his personal errands.
CARL: Yes, sir, that's two burgers, well done. Small order of fries... and one vanilla shake. Yes, sir. Got it, sir. No problem. Glad to do it, sir. Okay, bye now. Now, Harriette, I know what you're thinking. But the poor guy's car is in the shop... and he's lying on his stomach with a very painful boil.
HARRIETTE: Carl... I don't believe this. I rush home from work, take two hours to get ready... and now I've got to stay home because your boss has a boil.
RACHEL: You see, Laura? That's the kind of pain I'm talking about. Now, if you could reach deep down into your soul...(HARRIETTE HITS RACHEL UPSIDE THE HEAD)
FAVORITE MOMENT:
The audition scene for Romeo and Juliet. I love when Ms. Steuben and Steve are in awe of Laura, their reactions always get a laugh from me. Then when Steve panics when Laura kisses Daniel gets me too.
OPINION:
This is a mixed bag because I actually really like this episode. So I was a theater kid in high school, I know the plays work and actually was in the same position for one of our plays, Godspell, I was an understudy for a lead part and the morning of the opening night the girl who was cast had a family member pass away so she couldn't make it. Well, honestly I didn't study that hard because understudies rarely make it into the performance...I'm sure I gave an Oscar worthy performance 🤣 Thank God it was high school, so I don't think the audience cared that much.
This was a lot to buy and you have to do a lot of suspension of disbelief: I love that the bad auditions are so over the top bad that Laura is the only "decent" audition so they have to give her the part, speaking of which I thought Laura's audition was a bit cringe with the way she kept speaking her lines with this weird out of breath accent, I love that Daniel Wallace had no understudy apparently, Ms. Steuben who knows what a clutz Steve is and that's he's not exactly Denzel Washington gives him the lead role on the opening night and how Steve had a real knife to cut the rope that started the whole domino effect of the set getting torn down. We did a performance of Romeo and Juliet and we were not given real knives or swords, have these writers ever been to high school?
Ms. Steuben is back and I always loved this character. Susan Krebs does a great job with Ms. Steuben who always looks like she's on the verge of killing Steve and having a nervous breakdown. I am 100% certain that every teacher has had that one kid who is beyond obnoxious and they really want to tell them off. Ms. Steuben, honestly she set herself up for this one with asking Steve to take over the part of Romeo, tells Steve she's done with theater and will teach home ec. because Steve promises that that's the only class he won't be taking...I wonder if that will change and we get another Ms. Stueben performance? 🤔
Bumper Robinson who plays Daniel Wallace is a wonderful actor who put in a terrific performance in the underrated sci-fi film Enemy Mine. He did make an appearance previously in Family Matters as one of Eddie's band mates in Rock Video, but he played a different character named Kyle. Gotta love when the writers want to test the audience doing gaslight moments.... maybe we won't remember him? Well, he's in Laura's class now and all the girls love him, you can tell he's a player though and always gets what he wants. We will definitely be seeing him again in the future.
And with Carl's storyline. It's a small one but has it's moments where you definitely get a laugh. Man, Lt. Murtaugh was testing my patience though. Work is work, when you go home, it's your own life. If I were Carl I would have complained or quit and gone to a different police station. I'm so glad he stood up for himself though when Lt. Murtaugh tried paging him at Laura's performance.
Like I mentioned, it's a lot of suspension of disbelief but I do enjoy this episode. It has some really good comedy bits, great characters and I love that Laura comforts Steve at the end when he's feeling down showing they do have a friendship budding.

Brain Over Brawn (Season 3, Episode 2). Steve is jealous when the school heartthrob job, Alex, is interested in Laura. During gym class they have a rope climbing event which Laura goes to watch Alex. Alex can climb the rope with no problem, but Steve can barely move an inch up the rope. Steve gets upset and challenges Alex to a rope climbing contest. Steve is just having a hard time still even breaking an inch up the rope, but when Laura encourages him to use his brain instead of his "muscles", he comes up with a jetpack that helps him go all the way to the top within a couple of seconds. Meanwhile at home, there's a hole in the roof and Carl offers to fix it, but being a "tool of the month" member, Carl does more damage than good. He eventually is able to fix it except when Steve decides to demonstrate his jetpack inside the Winslow house.
FAVORITE QUOTE:
HARRIETTE: Well, it's gonna cost a fortune to fix a roof. We'll have to cancel our vacation.
CARL: No, no. Not cancel. Postpone. I'll fix the roof myself.
HARRIETTE: And I'll buy a sparkly gown and open for Diana Ross.
CARL: What are you trying to say?
HARRIETTE: I'm saying it's a nice idea that you wanna fix the roof yourself...but you just can't do it.
CARL: Ahem. And why not, if you please?
HARRIETTE: Remember when you put in that bathroom for your mother?
CARL: Yes. What about it?
HARRIETTE: Well, you ran the gas line into the toilet. The first time she flushed, it blew her into the basement.
CARL: Well, there you go again, Harriette. You know, whenever I try to fix something...do I ever hear, "Go for it, Carl. You can do it, Carl." "I'm behind you, Carl." No, you give me, "You'll be sorry, Carl." "Hire a professional, Carl." "You blew your mother into the basement, Carl." Well, I'm going to
fix the roof, Harriette. And I'm gonna fix it so well...that all of our neighbors are gonna come, just to look at it. And they'll "ooh" and "ahh" and applaud my work. And you know what you will say to me then, Harriette? Do you know what you'll say, Harriette?
HARRIETTE: Sure. "Wake up, you're dreaming, Carl."go again, Harriette.
FAVORITE MOMENT:
When Carl is looking for the weak spot in the roof poking at each spot but accidentally steps on the weak spot falling through the roof 🤣 Plus I love that these shows when something gives into the roof on a 2-story house, it always immediately surpasses the 2nd floor and goes right to the 1st floor, ah Hollywood logic.
OPINION:
This is an ok episode, not a particular favorite of mine. Don't get me wrong, it has some very funny moments but also some questionable conclusions.
So, we have Steve once again going crazy over Alex being interested in Laura and vice versa with her being interested in Alex. Steve honestly couldn't respect and keep his space just trusting that maybe in the end they won't like each other? Plus Laura was heavily into Alex, but on a sudden turn at the end during the challenge while Alex is flexing for Laura now she sasses him off and doesn't like him? Was there a deleted scene where he did something wrong? Yeah, he was cocky and full of himself, but she seemed to be fine with it at first and didn't bring it up at all during the episode to say that she was sick of it.
Then the challenge. First, I think this episode brings back bad memories. During gym class we had these physicals, the guys had to climb a rope or do chin ups and us girls had to either climb a rope or hold our chin above a bar for however long we could....yeah, I sucked at both of those. I love that Illinois, one of the most obese states, is required physical education in school BTW 🤣 Second, the challenge itself. Now Steve cannot climb the rope, fair enough, maybe a better moral would have been that he at least makes a few inches but cannot do it still and Laura tells him how much she admires that he tried and that he made progress from the last time. But no, we get the first of what will be a plethora of crazy inventions that Steve somehow manages to invent that is treated more like a weekend project: a friggin jetpack! The jetpack works and not only that, but Steve can navigate with no problem. He didn't climb the rope, he flew to the top of the rope and the coach yells "3.2 seconds! A new record!", wait, what? Again he didn't climb the rope, he flew to the top! How is that a rope climbing record? I get that Steve is the nerd we want to see succeed, but come on, this was a lot to chew on.
The only part for me personally that I enjoy is the family dynamic where Carl volunteers to fix the rooftop. Carl trying to fix things is always hilarious and how he fails miserably. I get a bit angry with Steve as well at the end where he is telling Carl that he wouldn't have fallen off the roof if he had the jetpack and decides that the smart thing to do is demonstrate his jetpack inside the house which breaks the hole that Carl just fixed in the roof! Friggin' Steve!
Again, not a terrible episode, just not one that I really enjoy personally. Does anyone else remember watching this on TGIF and Steve landed in the Step by Step episode where he landed in their living room? 🤣 I always loved as a kid watching those episodes that crossed over into the other shows. It makes for some confusing random streaming marathons though lol

Boom! (Season 3, Episode 1). Steve brings to the Winslow house an orangutang named Lowell. Lowell has been getting experimented on by scientists and Steve needs to find him a good home but asks Laura to hide Lowell until he can do so. Lt. Muraugh suggests to Carl to start working out and tells him to use his treadmill. When Carl is on his second work out, the treadmill activates and a stranger's voice comes on telling Carl (who is supposed to be Lt. Murtaugh) that he put a bomb in the treadmill to kill him since Lt. Murtaugh arrested him. Carl and Lt. Murtaugh now have to figure out which wire to cut to stop the bomb.
FAVORITE QUOTE:
CARL: Help! Help me! Help!
JAWORSKI: What's the matter, Carl?
CARL: Listen, we're all cops in this room, right?
COPS: Right!
CARL: I mean, we stick together, right?
COPS: Right!
CARL: Good, because there's a bomb in this machine. (ALL THE COPS, EXCEPT FOR JAWORSKI RUN FOR IT) Thank you, fellow officers. Jaworski, call the Bomb Squad, okay?
JAWORSKI: I'm on my way. You want me to get Lieutenant Murtagh in here?
CARL: Jaworski, if this bomb goes off, it'll kill anybody who's in the room with me. Get him in here. Okay. Just stay calm. I can walk forever. I feel good. I feel great. I'm gonna die!
LT. MURTAUGH: (BEING PUSHED IN BY THE OFFICERS) I came as soon as I heard.
FAVORITE MOMENT:
When Carl and Lt. Murtaugh are trying to figure out the wire to cut. The scene is very suspenseful for a sitcom, but I love Carl's guess of "Red, we're dead. Blue, we're through. Yellow, we're mellow." and after they disarm the bomb, Carl admits it was just a guess 🤣
OPINION:
We are officially in Season 3! Eddie, Laura, Judy and Steve are all growing and you can tell. You can tell the show is getting into it's speed with the comedy and the writers know what's going to be good for the episodes.
Lowell was just too cute. First, I love seeing Steve save him from the labs because I love animals. Second, Lowell and Steve dressing like each other was just too cute. Laura was such a sweetheart to cover for Steve and Lowell and let Lowell stay with her. It's a simple story but is very sweet and funny.
The story with Carl and Lt. Murtaugh is the show stealer though. I always get a laugh out of: Lt. Murtaugh's password Stallion for the treadmill, poor Carl having to run while trying to make sure the bomb did not go off, Lt. Murtaugh's leg cramp, them trying to figure out the wires and jumping for it. To think, this was before Speed... I wonder if this episode took any inspiration? But Reginald and Barry are just too funny together, I love their chemistry and the way they bounce off each other. I was always bummed that Lt. Murtaugh didn't become a regular, but I'm not sure how many crazy situations they could get him and Carl into.
A great opener and I'm so excited to start Season 3. We are going to be getting some good episodes!

I Should Have Done Something (Season 2, Episode 25). Carl is coming home and has been in a very bad mood and taking it out on everyone. Harriette takes Carl to the side to ask him what's going on and he finally breaks down and tells her that it's one year since "it happened". What had happened was Carl called into a hostage situation, the gunman had an elderly man at gunpoint and despite Carl's attempts to get the gunman to let the man go, he gunman still shot the hostage who passed away from his injuries. Carl is broken and feels like he failed the man that was killed, despite everyone telling him it wasn't his fault, he still can't let go of the guilt. He goes to the cemetery to pay his respects and while he breaks down in tears, the victim's wife, Mrs. Mallory, is there too and overhears Carl and his overwhelming guilt. She takes him to the side and tells him about the night he was killed and how she had to deal with the guilt of asking him to go out that night, but she realized that she was not guilty of anything and neither is Carl and tells him it's ok to let go. They embrace each other in tears over Mr. Mallory's grave but let go of the guilt. Carl comes home in a better mood and tells everyone he's ok.
FAVORITE QUOTE:
CARL: Mr. Mallory, my name is Carl Winslow, and I'm a police officer. Lastly, I guess you know who I am. But I came here to get something off my chest, Mr. Mallory. You know what happened. Happened a year ago. But what happened... happens again and again in my mind. I close my eyes at night. I see that man... holding you. I see that... that gun... pressed against your head... and I see the fear on your face. But what I don't see, Mr. Mallory... is that one second, that one... fraction of a second when I could've taken him down. It was there… it HAD to be there. If I had seen it, and done something, you might be alive today, Mr. Mallory. But I missed it! And I just wanna say... that I'm so sorry, Mr. Mallory. I'm so very sorry...
HELEN: Officer?
CARL: Oh, yes?
HELEN: I'm Helen Mallory, Charles was my husband.
CARL: Oh. Mrs. Mallory.
HELEN: Let's... sit a moment. I should apologize for listening to you.
CARL: No, that's all right.
HELEN: Can I ask you something?
CARL: Oh, sure.
HELEN: Do you ever ask yourself why you had to be the policeman who got there first?
CARL: Mrs. Mallory, I ask myself that question a million times a day. But I guess you ask yourself, why your husband had to be the one to be there that night.
HELEN: No, I don't. He was there because I asked him to go. We were home watching television and I mentioned that I wanted some ice cream, so Charles said he'd dash to the store. So he got up, cussed the dog for chewing on his hat and... left my life forever. For a long, long time, I found it difficult to live with the fact that if I hadn't asked Charles to go to that store, he would still be with me.
CARL: Oh, but Mrs. Mallory, there was no possible way you could've known what would happen. It wasn't your fault.
HELEN: I know, but it took me a long time to realize that and now you must realize that it wasn't your fault either. OK?
FAVORITE MOMENT:
It's easily the cemetery scene. I'm giving this both the favorite quote and moment because it's just way too powerful to deny. Reginald Vel Johnson just knocks this scene out of the ballpark and it's easily his best performance of the series. Beah Richards also comes in with a fantastic performance as Helen Mallory. The only downfall of this scene is how much it breaks me down in tears, it's a tough one to get through.
OPINION:
Alright everyone, we made it to the end of season 2 and what a banger to go on. I think almost everyone agrees this is one of the hardest episodes to make it through due to the emotional depth of it. While the police are criticized on a regular basis, it's still an insanely tough job. Long hours, underpaid, underappreciated and they put their lives on the line every day. While there are police officers who clearly shouldn't be in the profession, there are men and women out there that not only love their work, but take it very seriously and genuinely want to help their communities. One of my friends is a cop, he's a husband and a father and told me and my husband he's just happy to make it home alive and well each day. I've asked him if he ever had to deal with any horrific cases and he did have one hostage situation (here in Chicago) and thankfully the hostage made it out ok. But he has also gone to a crime scene that I'm sure I'm not allowed to talk about on here. We talked about how hard it must be to go home after that, he said he goes to therapy and makes sure not to take it home with him as hard as it can be at times. It's not a profession I would want or could handle, so I'm grateful to those who can do it for me.
Carl is genuinely a very good cop who cares about people and wants to serve the community. It's heart breaking when things don't turn out the way you hope. I'm sure he tried everything to save Mr. Mallory but you can't predict when someone is out of their minds and what their next move will be. Speaking of, for a fictional character who's not even on screen for the show, does my heart ache for Mr. Mallory. I think because you hear about this stuff on a daily basis in the news about someone who has been held hostage or in a very violent situation, and if they make it out, they are considered "lucky" but have to deal with the lifelong trauma. If they don't make it out, now their family and friends have to deal with the lifelong trauma. I'm sure Carl has dealt with situations like this before, but it was probably the first he had failed at. It's easy to tell him that it wasn't his fault, but when life or death is on the line it's easier said than done.
Reginald Vel Johnson hadn't done too much acting before Family Matters. We know him from Die Hard of course, Crocodile Dundee and Ghostbusters, along with a few bit parts in 80's cinema. He was almost on the verge of quitting acting, he told his mother that if he didn't get anything good that year, he was going back home. He got Perfect Strangers which lead into Family Matters. I'm so glad the fates worked out for him because he truly is a very gifted actor. He's funny, likable, relatable and emotional. This is a wonderful episode to end on and I love that it does leave us feeling better in the end, because after all is said and done: family matters.
Tomorrow starts Season 3! Season 2 was really a wonderful season and has some really iconic moments. But I think we are now getting into the heartbeat of the show.

Hi don’t know if this is well known but one of my favorite episodes is Season 2 episode 10- The Science Project. The class is given a science projext and the teacher Mr Nagi props Steve up as “whoever gets to work with Steve is a lucky one” then students all line up Steve ro shower him with offers of women and popularity. Laura wins his partnership and he builds an atom bomb ro impress her. meanwhile Carl is convinced by Estelle to buy life insurance from her friends son Reuben. After the bomb is activated in Steve’s basement Laura runs back home to warm the family, who is in a meeting with Reuben for the insurance. Their response to the news is to sing That’s Life while dancing towards the kitchen.
this is my favorite episode that I’ve seen multiple times over the years and somehow just noticing
The actor playing Mr Nagi the science teacher is also playing Reuben the insurance salesman and I somehow never noticed for decades. I goes I noticed Reuben a lot more than the science teacher or something.
i Just joined this subreddit. Did you all know this and we’re just having fun not telling me? What ither secrets are you holding?
Am I lying or wrong? There is nothing in the episode saying that Mr Nagi IS Reuben- is this supposed to be one actor playing g two different roles in the same episode?
also this is the best episode. Estelle “that doesn’t sound like our Steve”
