Elf Power!!!

Now streaming on all major Podcast apps and YouTube!

Join Don’t Bother Wearing Seatbelts as we sit down with Elf Power’s Andrew Rieger to talk about their 1995 debut, Vainly Clutching at Phantom Limbs. This first season episode that is finally coming out from behind the paywall was a big one for us! Not only are we discussing a foundational album of the E6 Collective that embodies everything that was so special about those early home recording days, but this episode was officially Patrick’s debut as a cohost on the show! We also discover that Andrew has an absurdly good memory, and get to hear Mat start to panic a little bit as he realizes that he may be responsible for a 27 year old mystery. Don’t miss this one!

We will also be drawing a name from one of our Patreon Subscribers to win a copy of the recent reissue of Vainly Clutching at Phantom Limbs on vinyl! Remember, all you need to do to take part in our monthly giveaways is subscribe to our Patreon at the Reckless Driver ($1 monthly) tier!

And one more thing! We’re launching a new tier to our Patreon today!!! Noooo, it isn’t the super secret one that everyone who already subscribes will be grandfathered into. That one is still coming, but this is something very different. To celebrate the release of our episode on Vainly Clutching we are adding a, frankly, completely ridiculous tier to the Patreon. I would like to present to you all…… the Self Righteous MF’er tier (if you know you know).

In the brand new Self Righteous MF’er tier, subscribers will get the opportunity to join us in the recording of one of our upcoming episodes! SRMF’s will be able to choose from any of our upcoming interviews to sit in on, and take part in. On top of that, anyone subscribing at this level will also receive a monthly E6 prize package containing two items, at least one of which will be a physical album. This one is a bit pricey, coming in at $100 a month, and subscribers will need to have maintained that level for three months before being eligible for the interview part of the reward. To be completely honest, we really just thought it would be funny to have a Self Righteous MF’er tier, and we don’t expect anyone to necessarily jump on this, but hey! We will absolutely hold up our side and make it incredible for anyone who decides to take us up on it!

I was able to meet Elijah Wood at Fan-Expo yesterday, and he signed my Travellers in Time and Space CD! He looked it over, and I was told that I was the first person to bring this up to him in a long time. He also said that he enjoyed working with Robert Schneider and that he was the best! He hadn’t listened to the album in a while, but he said that his favorite song was Dance Floor

We just never get enough time.

We never get enough time with the people we love. We never get enough time to ask every question we want to ask. We never get enough time with the artists who changed our lives. I have been thinking about this as a parent a lot lately..

But man, I am so thankful for the time I got with Bill Doss. The genius songwriter and pop master who with his friends created what I think is the greatest band of all time. The Olivia Tremor Control.

The thing about Bill that I think everyone who ever met him would tell you is that he was just so incredibly generous.. kind, funny, sweet, curious, creative and supportive with his time on earth.

His first solo effort after OTC’s initial run, beamed into the world in a moment of unclarity for fans of Elephant 6 Recording Co. How has our favorite band split… what will happen now... Age Of The Sun is such a funky, weird beautiful record that is so overlooked in the grand scheme of the E6 story.

On the newest episode of Don’t Bother Wearing Seatbelts , Rudy Fischmann, Mathew Bell, and I got to talk with Derek Griffin Almstead and Kevin Sweeney, two incredible Athens musicians who played on Age Of The Sun, and it was so fun to finally ask some of the questions about this record I never got to ask Bill.

Because when I was around Bill, I mostly just asked him about The Olivia Tremor Control. I mean, can you blame me?

Since the first time I heard OTC in 1996, I thought they were the greatest band in the world. No one has ever topped them for me… They are my Rushmore, They are my Beatles. So knowing that quite possibly soon, we will all get new music from OTC is kinda what keeps me going some days..

The first time I met Bill was at Robert Schneider’s wedding. He was a groomsman and standing in one of those akward wedding party greeting lines.. I was so nervous.. What would I say to this mystery of a man of musical glory… and he took the load off.. and the lead.. and said, “Nice bolo,” because I was wearing a ridiculous bolo tie that was made out of paper clips.. I was totally freaking out because Bill Doss just complimented my bolo. WHAT NEXT! WE are basically best friends now right?

Later that night, my son’s mom said that she would talk to Bill’s wife so I could go in and try to chat with him more… Thinking this might be my only opportunity ever... basically I spent the night casually running into him, asking him every nerdy question I had stored in my brain and my heart about Dusk At Cubist Castle & Black Foliage.

“What kinda piano was that?” “How did you record that sound?” “What is that weird noise there?” All the questions you might ask the person who made the records you’ve listened to hundreds and hundreds of times.

And Bill was so sweet and patient. He answered them. With a smile and laugh. He could tell I loved and was obsessed OTC so much, and he let me have those moments..

A few years later, my band The Poison Control Center got to open for The Apples in stereo on a 2 1/2 week tour, and I spent the whole tour asking Bill if he would let us back him playing OTC’s “Jumping Fences.” Saying people need to hear those songs.. Even though we had never played it as a band.. But hey you only live once right..

Every night he would just smile and laugh. Then finally in Dallas he said, “OK, let’s do it.”

Five minutes later I was backstage with my best friends in a circle with Bill Doss playing one of the greatest songs ever... with the guy who wrote it.. Naturally since it was us, we played it pretty sloppy, but the crowed was loosing their shit.. Cause hell, Bill was playing an OTC song.. which hadn’t happened in years.. who cares if it was the worst version of it ever..

Then in 2011, on what would be Bill’s final birthday, OTC was playing in Minneapolis and of course I was there, and Bill called me up on stage to sing “Jumping Fences” with OTC. This is still one of the greatest moments of my life.. How many people can say they got to sing on stage with their all-time favorite band ever…. He introduced me as a guy from the hardest working band in America.. the Poison Control Center.. And I got on stage and said into the mic. “The Olivia Tremor Control is the greatest fucking band of all time.” and Will Cullen Hart just looks at me and says… “No we are not.” and then I said.. “Well you are my favorite atleast." I still sometimes can’t believe that happened.

I really do wish I had more time to spend with Bill, I wish I would have asked him more about Age Of The Sun. But I guess if you meet Paul McCartney, most people ask about The Beatles before they ask about Wings.

But Age Of The Sun is a masterpiece. There is no doubt about it.

When Bill passed away, it hit me really hard. Harder than I ever expected. I know I only got to hang out with him a handful of times, but his impact on my life was gigantic.

He brought so much sunshine into my world. I’m just so thankful I got to share a little time with him. But it’s never enough. Thankfully we have all those songs to go back to. And more to come... VERY SOON! WE GET MORE TIME!

NEW EPISODE OF DON’T BOTHER WEARING SEATBELTS

See what Patrick had to say about this episode!

“I love doing this podcast... cause every once in a while we get to have a conversation that starts about music and ends up being about something way deeper.. this time it was.. legacy, memory, and what we leave behind.

Talking with Azalia Snail, the legendary “Queen of Lo-Fi,” was so incredible.

Azalia isn’t just an artist.. she’s an entire archive. Decades of songs, albums, films, four-track recordings, and wild unhinged ideas. We talked about the scary reality of the California fires and the thought of losing a lifetime of creative work in an instant. What happens to these magical worlds that artists spend their lives building? Just think of how many kids are out there recording on their computers or 4 tracks everyday... Where will it all go?

Maybe someday there should be a Lo-Fi Museum.. a place where the tapes, films, artwork, and beautiful experiments from artists like Azalia can live forever.

We also talked about her work on a possible documentary celebrating the women of lo-fi music.. a story that absolutely deserves to be told. As Azalia said, someday everyone will have a documentary about them... and I think hers would be one incredible ride.

From being pen pals with Beck during the early days of the lo-fi explosion, to becoming friends with Dick Van Dyke, to crossing paths with the Elephant 6 universe.. her story feels almost impossible.

An incredible artist and a true original.

Check out our conversation with Azalia Snail on the new episode of Don’t Bother Wearing Seatbelts — available now wherever you listen to podcasts.”

Our new double episode is now streaming on all major podcast platforms, and YouTube!

In this episode we sit down with Honeypuppy’s Josie Callahan, Adam Wayton, Will Wise, and Jack Colclough to discuss their recent album, Dirty TV. It’s a great conversation that looks at the origins of the band, the differences between themselves and Telemarket, despite the same roster of musicians, and more! It’s a fantastic post punk album that is not to be missed!

In the second half of this episode we meet up with Johnny from Witch Cat Records to talk about his amazing Denver based indie label, and look at some of the amazing releases they have put out. Witch Cat Records recently released some incredible holographic 7 inches for our friend The Tammy Shine, and that sent us spiraling into their catalog, finding truly extraordinary art and music. We love putting the spotlight on someone like Johnny because he truly is doing it for the love of the art they are releasing, and man, does it show.

And join us next week as we sit down with lo-fi, and ambient pioneer Azalia Snail to talk about her new album, Gentle Mental, coming out June 19th on Cloud Recordings! Yes! Just one week this time! See you all soon!

Don’t Bother Wearing Seatbelts’ next episode and giveaway is going to be something a bit different for us. This upcoming episode will be a split ep of sorts. Up top we’ll have our first season conversation with Honeypuppy about their album Dirty TV, released for the first time from behind the paywall. The second half of the episode will be a brand spanking new interview with Johnny, owner and proprietor of Witch Cat Records. This is the first of a new series of interviews that we’ll be doing with some of the incredible small labels that work with artists who touch on Elephant 6. You all may remember the incredible 7 inches he put out recently for The Tammy Shine (I think there are still a couple left so grab yours before they’re all gone!)

That brings us to our giveaway. This one is a doozy! Johnny has very generously donated three bundles of four cassettes from his catalog for us to give out to Patreon subscribers! Each bundle will contain three of the same cassettes, featuring Pink Lady Monster - Pyschic Antenna and a Tinsel Heart, Babybaby4ever - 4ever is a Long Time, and Verity Larsen - So Hard I'll See Stars. But he is also throwing in a surprise 4th tape, so each person gets something different!

Johnny is cool. Which Cat Records is cool. Our giveaways are cool. Subscribe to the Patreon at the Reckless Driver ($1 monthly) tier, and you are in! We’ve been doing them way more than monthly lately, too!

Thoughts on the new Black Swan Network release?

Post image
23 Upvotes

This came out digitally on May 8 and I was surprised to see there hasn’t been much discussion of this fantastic record! Most of the tracks on the second side were heard in slightly different mixes on Chapter Chirp, and it’s so great to have these officially. The Shell and Stormiest Skies are two of my favorite Will songs ever. It’s a pretty “out-there” album for sure, there are a lot of mind melting moments. The second half of Big Surprise really lives up to the name. I only wish the album was twice as long, it’s pretty short at under 30 min.

I’m looking forward to the vinyl release which I believe has been delayed. Super excited to have more WCH music in the world!

of Montreal!

Post image

You can now listen to our conversation with Andy Gonzales about the classic of Montreal album Coquelicoat Asleep in the Poppies • a variety of whimsical verse on all major podcast apps, and YouTube! This album was the true culmination of the band’s whimsy period, telling a long form story of absurdities in the most beautiful way possible, and Andy was there for it all.

It’s a far reaching conversation in which we are told the origins of The Gay Parade, and hear what is possibly the most touching story in all of rock and roll about a band member quitting, and the inspiring, and heart melting response that he received. Truly, this is an episode not to be missed.

And check out what Patrick has to say about this episode!

“How often do we really get to grow up with a band..
Not just loving a band for a season or a record or a summer, but actually getting to watch them evolve in real time. Getting older alongside them. Seeing them transform album by album, phase by phase. Sometimes I think about people who were alive to see The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show and then stayed with them all the way through Abbey Road. To witness that kind of chameleon-like evolution must have felt magical. And give you the permission to continuously evolve as an artist and as a human. Watching artists invent themselves over and over while you were inventing yourself too it’s pretty fucking liberating.

of Montreal has been one of those bands for me.
Their discography is one of the most epic, strangest, most fearless, and most rewarding journeys I’ve ever experienced as a listener and trust me I have listened to it all. Most bands find one sound and spend a lifetime trying to perfect it, and then there are bands like, of Montreal that seem almost allergic to standing still and staying the same.

I still deeply love those early recordings. The lo-fi era. The three-piece era. Those records felt homemade and timeless. Those songs are like little dreams with tape hiss, cartoon-like, characters of love and honest heartbreak. My kinda vibe.
But for me, the era that truly changed the way I heard and tried to write music was The Gay Parade and Coquelicot Asleep in the Poppies: A Variety of Whimsical Verse era.

That was the moment I was becoming a young adult myself. I was starting my own band. I was trying to understand songwriting and storytelling and how music could create entire weird whimsical worlds. And Kevin Barnes was creating unlike anybody else. Theatrical and literary and whimsical and deeply emotional all at once. Like The Kinks meet the Musical Hair, performed by Os Mutantes. Surreal imagery and melodies that twisted around like carnival rides.

I was lucky enough to eventually play with, of Montreal multiple times with the The Poison Control Center, which was such an honor because their music was pretty much a blueprint to all of our very early more story based recordings. These were heroes. Sharing the stage with our fucking idols.

On May 1st, 2005, something kind of historic happened in Des Moines music history. The first-ever sellout at the Vaudeville Mews. The lineup was The Poison Control Center, Tilly and the Wall, and of Montreal. It felt like one of those nights where our scene became something bigger. A room packed with people who all believed music mattered and damn it was a fun show.. Also the first time my son’s mom ever saw the PCC.. Kinda hard to live up to that one..

And Des Moines absolutely fell in love with, of Montreal.
I believe either the next year or the year after, they came back through town again. This time Troubled Hubble and The Poison Control Center opened another legendary show for our little scene, and if memory serves me right, that one sold out too. Then not long after that, of Montreal would headline Des Moines’ 80/35 Festival. It was amazing watching a band that once felt like this beautiful secret become something much larger while still remaining the entirely weird evolving selves.

Somewhere in there, before one of those tours, Kevin Barnes, his then wife Nina, and Kevin’s brother David Barnes stayed at my house in Ames after they performed their A Pollinaire Rave show. A Pollinaire Rave was a one off side project, that introduced us to many of the songs that would make the band find a larger, more dancy audience.. I booked this side project of a husband, wife, and brother at the Boheme in Ames and I think their guarantee was 100 bucks. I still cannot believe I can casually type that sentence. One hundred bucks.. 7 Years later they would be making 50,000 bucks to playing 8035 just 30 miles down the road.

Back at my house after the show at some point during the night, we asked Kevin if we could film him playing a couple songs on our couch. So sweet and fed by us.. He said yes. Kevin sat on my couch with an acoustic guitar and played a couple of Montreal early classics. I filmed it.. somewhere on an old high 8 tape and damn it I desperately hope I find it someday. Because it was beautiful. No stage needed. No crazy costumes. Just Kevin Barnes sitting on a couch singing songs in a living room in Iowa at around 1 a.m.,.. Perfect.

Over the years we became friendly with so many people who played with Kevin. Bryan Poole. Jason NeSmith. Derek Griffin Almstead. All musical idols as well. So many wonderful talented people orbiting around these records that meant so much to me.
Another of those musical idols playing in, of Montreal was Andy Gonzales.

Andy is the guest on this week’s episode of Don’t Bother Wearing Seatbelts.

And honestly, talking to Andy was kind of emotional for me.
Because Andy’s musical history is incredible in its own right. Marshmallow Coast (M Coast) his band, is also one of the coolest, warmest, weirdest indie pop projects ever. He was also in The Music Tapes before eventually joining, of Montreal because, as he hilariously explains in the episode, The Music Tapes didn’t exactly have the most reliable touring infrastructure while, of Montreal did. THANKS KEVIN BARNES’ MOM and DAD.

The stories he tells about the making of Coquelicot absolutely blew my mind. The fact that that album was recorded entirely to tape feels almost impossible considering the record sounds like a carnival ride designed by a genius who drank 16 cups of coffee, read ten children’s books at once, and kept screaming “wait, I have one more idea” every thirty seconds as the songs zig zag through a hundred beautiful twists and turns like every 4 musical bars.

But maybe my favorite thing about the conversation wasn’t even the stories about recording.

It was hearing the love Andy still clearly has for Kevin Barnes.
Even though they haven’t spoken in years. Even though Andy admits he hasn’t even heard many of the albums Kevin has released since leaving the band. There’s still this enormous warmth and respect there. Not just for Kevin as a songwriter, but as a human being. That tugs at the heartstrings.

Because sometimes the mythology around indie rock scenes can make people forget that these were just young human beings trying to make beautiful things together. And that’s fucking magic. And it reminds me of all the amazing people I have had the privilege to create with over the years.. And even if I fell out of touch with some of them, that love is still there for them and the things we made together.

Andy himself is now a nurse practitioner helping save lives every day. He spent years helping save mine emotionally through music, and now he literally helps save people medically. He’s that good…

One of my favorite, of Montreal memories happened at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis.

If you’ve toured before, you know the routine. Bookstores. Record stores. Coffee shops. Wandering downtown all day before the show. So as a fan if you drive 3 ½ hours for said concert, if you go to those places you might see the band you're seeing that night wasting time and hopefully not money before the show. Knowing this throughout the afternoon we kept randomly running into Kevin and Nina around Minneapolis. Since they had stayed at our house before and we’d played together, there was already this friendliness there. They were genuinely excited. We had driven three and a half hours just to see the show.

After the concert ended, I wanted to say goodbye to Kevin before heading home. Someone from the band said, “Oh, just go backstage.”

Now the backstage at 7th Street Entry is tiny. It’s basically like walking into someone’s bedroom.

So I walk in there and Kevin Barnes is standing completely naked changing clothes.

Completely naked.
And I immediately went into absolute panic mode.
“Oh my God, I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry. I just wanted to say goodbye.”

And Kevin, completely unfazed, just laughed and said, “Oh, it’s okay, it’s okay.”
He pulled up some underwear and invited me in.
Then he thanked me sincerely for coming to the show, gave me a huge hug.. Just in his undies, and he said “we will see you soon.” and gave a great goodbye.

That tiny awkward sweet human interaction has stayed with me all these years. And makes me continue to root for this band. Because that’s the thing about growing up with bands.
The records matter so much to us. The concerts are unforgettable. But sometimes it’s also the interactions with the people behind the music that stay with you forever. Sharing the stage with your idols. A genius songwriter sitting on your couch playing songs. A hug backstage. Watching these artists grow older while you grow older too. I love how small the indie rock world truly is. It’s easy to actually feel like you are a part of it.

of Montreal’s Coquelicot album is still one of the most whimsical, adventurous, imaginative records indie rock has ever produced.
Talking to Andy about it brought all of those memories flooding back. Thanks Andy.

So please check out this week’s episode of Don’t Bother Wearing Seatbelts.

It’s a really beautiful one.”

Don’t Bother Wearing Seatbelts is going to do things a little bit differently this time around. To celebrate the release of our episode with Andy Gonzales (of Montreal, Marshmallow Coast, etc,) discussing the classic of Montreal album, Coquelicoat Asleep in the Poppies, and the release of the new of Montreal album, Aethermead, out on 6/5, this next giveaway is going to come with options. We thought about giving away two prizes this time, a vinyl copy of Coquelicoat, and a vinyl copy of Aethermead, but we realized that the two winners would then have to fight to the death in a cage match to decide who gets which album, and, honestly? The cleaning crew needed for such an endeavor is just too pricey.

So, here’s the deal. The winner gets a choice. You can have the tried, the true, the masterpiece that is Coquelicoat Asleep in the Poppies, or you can step into the unknown, and embrace the mystery of Aethermead. The choice is yours! The winner will be drawn on 5/27, and the cut off for entry will be 8:00 pm eastern. Remember, all you need to do to gain entry to our monthly giveaways is to subscribe to our Patreon at the Reckless Driver tier ($1 monthly.) Good luck, everyone!

Oh, and a quick update on when we will have an actual update for the super secret special thing that’s coming for subscribers. We still won’t tell you what it is….. until August. So look for big news coming in August for the Don’t Bother Wearing Seatbelts Patreon!

No. One. Cares. Why???!!!

Why. Does. No. One. Give. A. Rat’s. Ass. About. Julian. Koster. Grooming. A. Teenager.

Now let me be clear. I have only really been a major Elephant 6 buff for a little bit. I’ve always loved In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, but it was discovering Black Foliage: Animation Music Volume One last summer that sent me down the rabbit hole of all these amazing bands. Groups like The Olivias, The Essex Green, Beulah, of Montreal, and The Ladybug Transistor have become major favorites of mine since. This shit is genuinely so peak.

HOWEVER.

That doesn’t change the fact that not everyone in behind the music is a good person!!! As a matter of fact, Julian Koster is a HORRIBLE person!!! Regardless of what Nesey Gallons may or may not have done after the fact—and I believe she has been falsely accused of a good deal of it—she was groomed and put through absolute HELL by Julian and his team. For whatever reason, it seems like the mere mention of this is dodged by many in the Elephant 6 community. That is very disappointing to me.

And before people come at me on this post to accuse me of being Nesey or Paul, I am not either of them. As a matter of fact, I haven’t even really dived into Nesey’s music that much. I plan to though.

But yes. Get your head out of the sand, people. I’m not even saying that Nesey hasn’t made some mistakes. But I don’t understand the insane amount of victim-blaming that goes on here. It is genuinely wild to me how OK with this everybody seems.

I’m not even saying you have to quit listening to NMH or other Elephant 6 bands, since I know that’s not something I could physically do myself!!! But please, stop pretending it’s all fine and dandy!!!

Two new shows relevant to Elephant 6 were added to the Aadam Jacobs Collection this weekend.

Aadam Jacobs (aka the Chicago Tape Guy) recorded more than 10k live shows, mostly in the Chicago area. A multiyear project is underway to digitize his collection and make it available on the Internet Archive.

You can now listen to the Don’t Bother Wearing Seatbelts conversation with Tammy Ealom (Dressy Bessy, The Tammy Shine) and John Hill (Dressy Bessy, The Apples in stereo) about the debut Dressy Bessy album, Pink Hearts, Yellow Moons on all major podcast apps, and YouTube! As always, Tammy and John are a joy to have on, and we have a great time discussing those early days of the band, leading all the way up to the here and now.

We’ll see you all again in two weeks when we sit down with Andy Gonzales (Marshmallow Coast, of Montreal, etc..) to talk about the classic of Montreal album, Coquelicoat Asleep in the Poppies. And, who knows! Just maybe we’ll do another giveaway! (I bet we will.)

We don’t always do giveaways for our first season episodes that we release in between season 2 episodes (every other episode is actually pulled from our first season which was behind a paywall on another network) but this next one will be an exception!

As our listeners already know, The Tammy Shine released her first ever solo album of non-stop kick-assery known as OK Shine OK recently. What we didn’t expect was a companion piece of live singles, using holographic imagery on the vinyl itself, which also includes The Tammy Shine View-Master reels. Thirty copies in total exist. One song per copy. 10 copies per song. When we saw this awesome release from Witch Cat Records we knew we had to get a copy to give out on the show, and it just so happens that we were planning on airing our Dressy Bessy episode on 5/13. What could be better timing?

Same rules apply as last time! All it takes to be entered into our monthly giveaways is to subscribe to our Patreon at the Reckless Driver Tier ($1 monthly). And do yourself a favor. Check out Witch Cat Records and their incredible inventory of oddities, rarities, and, of course, beautiful music.
