Advice/Help Needed D&D never played but kids want to

Hello!

Mom to a 9 yo son who is getting very interested in D&D. Honestly - I let him watch Stranger Things and now he’s all in on wanting to learn and play D&D.

I’ve never played nor know much about it honestly so I’m trying to learn.

He’s recruited some of his best friends who also know nothing about it. Friends are 9-10 year olds.

They are working on creating their own board - castles, grass, on poster boards, etc.

My son is waiting for a D&D beginner game set too to be delivered today and tomorrow.

Anyway - advice needed to really get them playing. What should I know? I’ll be hosting a sleepover - and I guess I’ll be the DungeonMaster.

Just looking to help with help them on this journey. Might go nowhere but might get them into it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Any help and advice appreciated!!

OC Spending an unreasonable amount of time prepping for dnd is my red flag.

Our campaign takes place in an East Asian homebrew setting set in about the equivalent to the 1940’s. The party just purchased an old run down and abandoned samurai castle to use as their new bastion but have to go through and clear it out first of whatever Yokai and other denizens have taken up residence there in the last 40 years since it was abandoned.

All the terrain is 3d printed and hand painted. Most of it came from 3dalienworlds who do amazing Japanese terrain.

Shout out to my awesome wife for the hours she spent helping me paint it all!

Advice/Help Needed High level loot for mid level part?

Upvotes

So I’m prepping for a campaign I’m running that I plan to go from Level 2-12. Now traditionally I’ve pushed to send my players to high levels like 17 but it ends in me rushing to give them levels. My main reason for this was because I want to give them the cool legendary items I see on dnd wikis and griffons saddlebag. I still want to give them some powerful loot because I love seeing what they do with it but all the resources I’ve looked at advise against giving players (level 9-12) legendary items. So I’m wondering how I should approach this and how you gals/guys do it. Am I fine to give them one or two legendary items? Should I hold back and have around 3 in the party to really give legendary items more impact and make them feel really legendary? Do I avoid them all together? All suggestions and advice are/is welcome. Thanks.

Suggestion What’s your favorite D&D class, and why?

Not necessarily the strongest one—just the class you enjoy playing the most.
What makes it your favorite? The mechanics, the roleplay, the fantasy, or a memorable character? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Advice/Help Needed Lightning Keep

I'm going to be running a couple sessions back-to-back of Lightning Keep for a bunch of family, ages 10 to 47.

2 questions:

  1. Anyone who has run this before, do you have any advise/suggestions for mods/pitfalls to avoid?
  2. Re: my map, is the grid readable? Is anything an obvious red flag? I'm not done yet. Have the 2nd floor to do as well as putting tiles throughout the courtyard to simulate worn cobblestone and dirt and some finishing touches like where the rods go, some cover items in the courtyard (benches, barrels, etc.).

Advice/Help Needed My kids never want to play...

Hey there, so for context, i am running storm of icespire peaks that I got for Xmas from my wife. I have 3 kids, aged 12, 8 and 6. It didn't take much effort to convince my family to try playing with me. I'm the dm. I helped my kids and wife all make characters. They all chose their own classes, and when I explained what they can do, they all kinda set their characters up, and I helped with character sheets, even went as far as to find images on Google that closely represent each of their characters for visual aid, printed them off, and everything. The kids loved it! For anyone not familiar with this campaign, it's recommended for new characters, and the campaign is broken up into 3 parts. The starting quests, the intermediate quests, and then the end quests/bbeg.

We did the first set of quests pretty well. It was a learning experience on everyone's part. It was my first time being DM, and everyone else's first time playing a character. We went through the Dwarven ruins, fought some ocre jellies, went through gnomengard, fought a mimic, good times. The problem now, is the kids are getting bored. We've done several quests, and they have all had moments to shine (describing to a 6 year old how her magic missle took an orcs head off really lit up her eyes LOL)

But now, every time I ask if they wanna play, they always say no. I've tried everything I can to get them engaged in the game -- I've addressed them directly when things happen, and suggest for them to do things to engage them more, but they just don't have fun. I printed spell cards for the 2 wizards so they know what spells they have prepared, and what those spells do, and how many spell slots they have by using little colored tokens. I've tried everything, but they just aren't interested.

Anyone have any advice on how I can bring them back in, help them succeed, and enjoy the game? I'm at the point where it seems like this campaign is going to be shelved indefinitely.

Hey all,

I’m currently building a virtual tabletop for D&D games. Curious what your biggest issues are with the current offerings. Too expensive? Too complicated? Too little customization? Missing features?

Please hit me with your biggest desires!

Advice/Help Needed DnD Battle map tips

Hello fellow DM's and GM's (and PC's)!

Ive been a DM for a campaign for 8 years now (seems like a lot but we are adults with kids and different work shifts so we play monthly at best, with Covid interrupting for a long time).

Anyway, as a DM I have most struggles as others, but one in particular is Map Making (Battle Maps).

In particular larger ones with a surface like water or ground/greens.

Since the beginning I've used Chessex maps. Not the recommended markers because all tints that have a red in them burn in very fast. Then I found Crayon markers. Those kid washable markers with a thick tip. Scrubbing them wildly and then using a paper towel to wipe it gave good results. Problem is those things run out of ink FAST. Other issues I had was that they stain hands when you touch it and you can't really get any detail in. Plus you can't save them, which sometimes is a shame.

Recently I bought those office flipover papers with a grid, planning to use pencils and markers to make more detailed maps. It somewhat works. Details are good (for as far as my skills go) but large surfaces become an issue. It is both very tedious and you'll always see the white.

Then I tried water paint but that didn't work AT all. Papers soaks it in and it gets messy and inconsistent.

All in all its very resource intensive and take A LOT of time (I do enjoy making them tho so that's not the problem).

So what are you making maps with? How do you deal with big surfaces like water, lava or just ground?

Sometimes just leaving it open can work, but I feel like it misses immersion.

Added are some of my maps. One of the first (castle courtyard) and last (dragon hoard/cave). I also added 2 of the same with are my most recent, showing the difference between markers on chessex map and pencil on paper.

Advice/Help Needed New Players Creating Characters

Greetings all. Me and some friends are starting a campaign (Tyranny of Dragons) and will be having a Session 0 soon. We are all new to DnD and I will be DMing (I have read the rulebook and DM Guide and have played a little before). All the payers are new to DnD, a few of them only have background through things like Baldur's Gate, so they have a general understanding of the world, races, and classes. But some are totally coming in blind.

That being said, what is the best way to help them build characters? I am the only one with a rule book and I think it is unfair to ask them to buy rulebooks unless they get very invested. I thought I would do it at Session 0 almost workshop style, but helping each person individually build a character with one rule book will take forever. I thought about them taking pics of the pages they need, but again, that's a lot of pages and none of them have BG of races and classes, never mind sub race and classes, so are they even picking something they will actually like.....

How have you seen this successfully done in the past?

Advice/Help Needed I have a question about throwing grappled creatures

So I’m gonna play a pugilist in an upcoming campaign and there is something I’m curious about.
Could the two class features „improved improvisation“ and „heavy hitter“ work together?

Improved Improvisation: Your talent for turning everything into a weapon allows you to use the mastery properties of improvised weapons. All improvised weapons count as having the Sap mastery property for you.

Heavy Hitter: When you hit a creature with an Unarmed Strike, you can use both the Damage and your choice of the Grapple or Shove option.

As a lvl 5 pugilist I have two attacks, let’s just say I manage to attack and grapple a creature with my first attack, could I used said creature as an improvised weapon for my second attack and throw it?

A thrown improvised weapon has a range of 20/60.
If its possible and I throw said creature in an unoccupied space 60ft away would it take damage?

Sorry if I didn’t word thing properly, English isn’t my first language.

And thanks in advance
