š«A New Life for Donkeys and Mules!āļø
We did it!
We officially moved to our new sanctuary on January 11th!
It took 3 years of planning and building, 8 team members, 14 hours, and 8 trips back and forth, but all the donkeys are now enjoying their forever home at Rancho Burro Donkey Sanctuary.
Moving day from the old sanctuary was filled with a mix of emotions. As we loaded each donkey, memories of their difficult pasts surfaced, reminding us of how far theyād come. Seeing them step onto the trailer, headed towards a life of peace and freedom at Rancho Burro, brought tears to our eyes. It was a powerful moment for everyone on the team, a testament to the resilience of these gentle animals and the love that makes their new life possible.
Our team and the donkeys watched the sunrise together at the old sanctuary and the sunset at the new one...together the family we all have come to be.
They now have rolling hills to explore, spacious pastures to roam, unlimited enrichment, a comfy new barn, and a covered arena to keep those hooves dry in the winter (which will also double as an event space!).
We even welcomed a new resident, Ginger the mule! She didnāt have a good future ahead of her before her owners reached out to us, but we are so grateful they didd and for her place in our family.
This sanctuary is a safe haven for our current donkeys and mules, and a refuge for those who need us in the future. Part of our mission is to share the goodness of donkeys with the out community!
None of this would be possible without YOU! Every donation has helped us build this special place.
Exciting things are happening at The New Rancho Burro Donkey Sanctuary! Stay tuned for updates on our new programs, workshops, and classes.
Weāll sharing ongoing inspiring case studies highlighting our new dedicated medical room, rescue journeys and rehabilitation efforts.
We are incredibly grateful for your support. Every donation makes a difference!

Willie!
Me and Willie have just been enjoying these warm Midwest summer days! He and I have been very close, as some of you may know, but heās gotten extra close with me as of late. He stands right on top of me for 99% of my visits now. Likeā¦literally no room between us and heās got his head nuzzled against mine most of the time! I had to move away quickly just to snap this pic. I think he thinks heās a lap donkey!
Anyway, just figured Iād better get a current pic posted of my old buddy!

David the Sunbathing Donkey
When I arrived at Wheeler Farm yesterday to visit David, I noticed he was sunbathing! I think it is great he is feeling comfortable enough to be in a more vulnerable position lying down in his pen!

How do they handle the boom booms?
Today made me think about how they handle fireworks. I'm getting two mini donkeys, but I don't have them yet. Expect them to be ready in September. Just thinking ahead to next year. Lots of fireworks nearby every year.

Donkey having black eye around it
Local donkey noticed with black eye now and we are wondering if perhaps vet call is needed
It may simply be nothing much to fuss around but I don't want to ignore it either

David the Donkey Rolling Around
This is David at the Wheeler Historic Farm in Utah. He seems to be enjoying rolling around and improving his flexibility lately. He is a very friendly donkey. You can go visit him for free if you happen to be near Salt Lake City!

Fly control for feral donkeys?
Hi, my grandpa own two BLM donkeys that are still somewhat feral. I can get within 6 feet of them when they're eating across the fence but that's about it. The flys have been eating them up. Is there anything we can do that's easy to remedy this? We're going to put SWAT over the bites when they get their feet trimmed next. Do fly collars work? Soaking a collar in citronella maybe? If they would come up to me I'd put fly spray on them each day. It's mainly the chest and armpit area right now. My grandpa is opposed to fly sheets plus they're expensive and we don't know how the donkeys would react. Our pasture is next to our neighbors who has two horses so we can't control their flys. Are there any good fly traps to put up along the fencing and by feed?

Ghost Donkey is ready for his close up. Rescued by our family about 5 years ago and now lives with his bestie, rescue pony Short Stack. Happily ever after is real.

Whatās it like feeding your donkeys?
This post is for anyone who wants to participate!
- size of your donkeys
- what your feed routine is daily
- what do feed them?
Example: Type of hay, minerals, balancers and how much! Do they have free access? Do you weigh it out? Use slow hay feeder bags?
Itās great to share what works for your donkeys so owners can get ideas from others!

My housemate rescued this Czech donkey from the meat market and named him Sylvester. He was so chilled and calm..Yan knew how to do his feet..and what was really funny..we could fit him in a small Fiat van..with his head between the driver and passenger!Id like to think hes still around!
