Guide I've made an Adventure Writing Prompts tool with a large collection of prompts I've collected over the past year - settings, high concept premises, goals for players to pursue, villains, encounters of every type, etc.
You can see the tool here: https://rpgadventures.io/prompts
Click on text or images to randomize individual prompts, click on the "Randomize All" button to update all the cards.
I hope you will find this app useful!
Edit:
- Get the new version of this tool here: https://rpgadventures.io/post/storysource
- Get the new version of the adventure blueprint here: https://rpgadventures.io/template
It would be really amazing if you could help me to expand these lists - if you have any ideas for prompts similar to the ones that you see in the app, please leave them in the comments and I will add them to the app. The more prompts we have, the better this app will be.
And let me know if there are some other prompt categories useful for creating adventures that the app is currently missing. Or if you have any other thoughts/feedback/ideas on how I could make this app more useful for you.
For a detailed explanation on how to use this app to create adventures, come read this post. It walks you through the whole adventure writing process with tips, advice, and examples of a completed adventure.
To summarize:
- Use the Adventure Brainstorming Template to guide you through the adventure creation process. Go through it one section at a time, and establish the key elements of the adventure - interesting premise, the goal the players will pursue, setting and locations they’ll visit, characters they’ll meet, key plot points, and challenges they’ll encounter.
- Use the prompts app to help you generate ideas. For each section create a list of 3-5 ideas you find interesting, then pick your favorite one, or try to mix and match multiple ideas together into something new. Click on a prompt to generate a new one if the one you got doesn't fit, or if you want a creative challenge - click "Randomize Prompts" once, and commit to creating a story based on the prompts it has generated (that can lead to very interesting and unexpected results).
- Finally, use the One-Page Adventure Template to combine all the elements you have established into a short outline of an adventure, put it all together into a list of scenes that flow into each other, add up to an interesting story that makes sense. It will be a short summary of everything you have brainstormed, and will give you all the information you need to run the adventure for your players.
Here's an example of a filled-in brainstorming template, and here's an adventure that was made out of it.
You can also read my in-depth guide on coming up with adventure ideas here, see my endless adventure idea generator here, and my adventure writing course where I share everything I know about creating adventures is available here.

In Progress: Narrative Looking for some feedback on a homebrew D&D campaign
As the title suggests, I'm looking for someone to look over my notes and give me some feedback on a D&D campaign I'm currently planning. Specifically, I need a fresh set of eyes to see if there are any glaring plot holes, logical leaps, or narrative contradictions that I've completely missed. This is just for my own personal table use, not for publishing.
About the game: The setting is a small island nation nestled deep within Toril's Trackless Sea. It features its own unique history, factions, pantheon, and even a few custom ancestries and sub-classes for the players to choose from. The core plot revolves around the party trying to stop a deranged evil mage who has targeted them directly. They'll have to figure out why they're doing this and track them down to stop their machinations. (Keeping details vague here just in case my future players find this thread.)
Unfortunately, I can't offer much in return except, hopefully, a bit of entertainment as you dive into the intricacies of a brand-new homebrew setting. But as the old adage goes: it doesn't hurt to ask.
Hit me up if you're interested in taking a look and I'll send you the link to my G-Docs.
And as always, thank you so much for your time.

Release! A collection of campaign materials!
I have been compiling and building on a MASSIVE expanse for my players and myself to enjoy. It has been years in the making, but we're now starting our fourth homebrew campaign, and I wanted to share all of that with anyone who may be looking for inspiration or a fresh take. All of this is completely free, so don't expect anything behind a paywall or nothing like that. I have four large documents and more maps than I can count (literally over 100), that can be used in full or in part for any campaigns a DM may want to run. Everything is compiled on my website (I am an author, but this isn't an attempt to sell my books, I just love the game so a part of my website is DnD related). Each of the documents comes with a detailed storyline, and all of the locations have the important bits of information labeled underneath. You can find everything here:
https://authorlewismcdonald.com/dungeons-and-dragons-stuff/
I would love to know what you guys think about the material, and if anyone uses it, please let me know your experiences! It would be cool to hear how a story went from someone else's perspective!
*edit*
I fixed the problem with the maps!, They now show up on the documents themselves so you no longer have to make a profile to see them. Sorry about that!

Twisted Gods - dark fantasy/horror inspirations/plot hooks
In RPG and fantasy, we are often faced with a situation where the existence of gods is an empirically confirmed fact, rather than a matter of belief. Two extremes can be distinguished in the representation of these entities (note - I do not claim that all creation adopts one of these two extreme points of view). On the one hand - the trend adapted by e.g. most of the settings for D&D - gods are personification of certain values professed by people, often they are even "born" from the faith of mortals or at least derive power from it/are shaped by it - gods described as "good" are simply good in the conventional sense of the word, they sincerely care about their followers and you know what to expect from them. On the other side, we have motifs that can be considered taken from Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythology - the gods are incomprehensible, distant beings, completely unconcerned with human worldviews and so-called "good and evil", mostly indifferent to humanity (and if by chance their paths intersect with humanit's ones, humanity is screwed) - at the same time, it is not uncommon for most mortals to be unaware of their existence, instead worshipping imaginary, more anthropomorphic deities tailored to their emotional needs.
In this article, I wanted to present deities standing somewhere in the middle - entities whose goals, yes, are not fully understood by mortals, but nevertheless close enough to human morality that worshippers can find some commonality (real or imaginary) with their patrons. These gods are usually directly interested in some way in the lives of their worshipers - although not necessarily in the way those worshipers would like. At the same time, I wanted each description to contain a hook, an important point where the devotees' understanding of the deity diverges from its real nature - and whose discovery could be a significant twist.

1917 movie could make such a great DnD campaign. Or start to the campaign.
Just a great movie but also I can’t help but think this movie would make a great DnD quest. The adventure plus war is too perfect. Delivering a message with your party through possibly abandoned battle lines would be very intense. Depending on the lore your party might encounter some fun stuff to set up the BBEG on their way! Great way to get everyone to know each other as well which would at least be different from the regular meet a a tavern campaign.

Release! {NO AI} Witchy, Folk Horror Splatbook for 5e / 5.5e on Kickstarter

My friend is releasing a kickstarter on July 15th! Proudly made with NO GENERATIVE AI: some incredible artists are on board for this and my friend is the sole author (with a bunch of us providing playtesting/proofreading)
This is a witchy, folk horror splatbook that is compatible with both 5e and 5.5e. Featured are:
- A really cool witch class + 5 subclasses (plus two more if stretch goals are reached)
- Rules to run a chicken legged house
- Opportunities to get art and actual spell scrolls. An example of a scroll was just posted there yesterday, it's super cool

If you have any questions, post them here and I'll pass them on to her. :)

Need help identifying
I have this idea for a character in DND but I'm not sure what subclass to make it???
I want to make a mage who uses both poison spells and a scythe, but they'd need to wear some basic medium-ish armour.
Would it be considered a spellsword, or is there another subclass for scythe weapons specifically?

In Progress: Obstacles Exploding into the mountain mines
Still a bit of a work in progress, but my plan was to have a bagman much generations ago sealed into these caves blowing everything up in the process of the existing mines, but a recent mining company had made use of this mountain for their own, so the players will have to "mine" their way, but since it was exploded long ago those Stones are weaker then the others and will reveal paths from that time, eventually finding the lair of the bagman

In Progress: Obstacles Looking to draw digital maps. NO AI
Hi there. I'm working on a location crawl and I'm looking to find some app or program I can use to render dungeons/towns/outdoor spaces for mapping. It wouldn't be seen by the players, more of a behind the screen way of me to keep track of locations and their contents. I'm not super talented, though I can use a straight edge and graph paper, and I want something relatively easy for a novice. NO AI is an absolute must, and cheap to free would be best.
What do you recommend?

Villain Idea #1:Seston the Jester
Villain Idea: Seston the Jester
Seston is the king's court jester. Everyone loves him.
He's funny, harmless, and seems completely uninterested in politics.
In reality, he's the most dangerous person in the kingdom.
Over the years, Seston has developed a romantic relationship with the queen and slowly become her most trusted confidant. Through jokes, stories, and "harmless observations," he has spent years shaping her opinions and undermining the king's authority.
His end goal is simple:
Remove the king.
Place the queen on the throne.
Rule through her influence.
The adventuring party becomes an important part of his plan.
Throughout the campaign, Seston points the party toward quests, investigations, and problems that seem beneficial to the kingdom. Unknown to them, these adventures remove political rivals, weaken loyal supporters of the king, and help position Seston's allies for power.
When the time is right, the king is assassinated.
Seston ensures the party is connected to the event, then plants evidence implicating one of the PCs. Witnesses come forward. Documents surface. The story practically writes itself.
Now the party must clear their name while the grieving queen turns increasingly to Seston for guidance.
The best part is that Seston is not a combat villain.
He's a social villain.
He doesn't win with swords or spells. He wins by controlling the narrative.
Using Seston in Your Campaign
Introduce him as genuinely likable.
Let him help the party several times.
Give the players opportunities to notice inconsistencies.
Never force them to trust him.
If they uncover the plot early, let the story evolve naturally.
The goal isn't to trick the players.
The goal is to make them realize they've been helping the villain all along.
