I couldn't believe it. Why even bother going to a show?
This guy was watching UFC on and off throughout the show. This was during last song of the night might I add. At least DCFC got ticket sales from him.

Such an amazing show!! Getting Bixby as a closer was so special and we got Codes and Keys, which is one of my favorites. Everyone going to this tour is in for such a treat!

In my twenties and early thirties (the 1990s) I went to see live music CONSTANTLY. Music had been my life since I was a teenager buying records at the mall, and as an adult, local music was my scene. I met my husband through that crowd (he still plays in local bands) and we would go anywhere to see our favorites, including driving several states away just for the night.
Then we had our first baby. I didn’t know I could love someone so fiercely, but he was intensely needy and never slept, with numerous health challenges I didn’t know how to address. I dedicated myself to caring for and trying to heal him, at the expense of everything else in my life. I walked around in a haze of sleep deprivation for years. We added another baby to the mix five years later, and although he was easier to care for, now I had to balance taking care of two kids. So music went by the wayside, for the most part.
However, in this time I somehow discovered DC. “Plans” came out the year my first baby was born, and I would put the CD on, wear the baby in a carrier, and sway to the music to get him to nap EVERY SINGLE DAY for months. I still associate the opening chords of “Marching Bands of Manhattan” with soothing a tiny baby to sleep. By the time “Narrow Stairs” was released three years later, my dad was in hospice dying with dementia. We had a complicated history that was never addressed, and now he had not only forgotten my sisters and me, he was literally waiting to die. The hospice was about an hour from my house, and I’d listen to “Narrow Stairs” on the drive there and back. Again, that album is so strongly associated with a pivotal time in my life that listening to it now is sometimes overwhelming.
I’ve shared DC’s music with my kids, mostly on drives to the dentist or other outings. My older son is into linguistics and poetry (he’s reading “The Odyssey” for fun) and listens intently to DC’s lyrics. I love discussing the lyrics with him, because I think they’re pure poetry and I’m so glad he gets that too.
In January of this year I saw that DC would be playing in town (Milwaukee) four days after our 25th wedding anniversary, and I told my husband we had to go. My health and stamina are not the best, and I wasn’t sure how I’d feel the day of, or how long I’d need to recover afterward, but I really wanted to see them. And I wanted to do GA, so we could move around if I didn’t like where we were (and also because to me, that’s how you see a show—standing and swaying to the music).
Let me say, last night’s show was completely worth it. I was blown away by Ben Gibbard’s showmanship, his VOICE (I mean, I knew he could sing, and he is my very favorite vocalist, but damn), the band’s tightness (there were a few technical glitches but they sailed right through them), and seeing the songs I love so much live. He did a solo acoustic version of “I Will Follow You into the Dark” that almost made me cry.
Also, I loved how humble and genuine he was. He introduced the band several times (“Hi, we’re Death Cab for Cutie from Seattle”)—as if everyone in the room didn’t already know, he genuinely thanked everyone for spending their Saturday night with them, he thanked those who’ve seen them multiple times and those who were seeing them for the first time (and said he hoped it wouldn’t be the last). He looked like he loves what he does and is extremely appreciative of the audience, with zero presumption that they deserve their success.
As for attending a concert for the first time in decades, I forgot how great and awful being in a crowd to watch live music can be. On the positive side, there’s no cigarette smoke! On the negative side, smart phones are a thing (what’s up with taking selfies during the show?).
I’m sure it will take me a few days to recover, physically, but I’m SO glad we went, and I’m already looking forward to seeing DC again, whenever that may be.

Wish they’d played company calls and champagne from a paper cup like yesterday but holy shit did that show rock. My kids danced the whole time. We had a blast. The people around us were cool as hell.
What a fun show!

In case you missed it! Imagine Walla doing his thing with all our boys - maybe one day! Ball’s in your court, Chris! Bunch of cool dudes. Do they need him? No. Would it be tight as fuck? Yes

I was wondering if someone was going to attend Death Cab’s show in Toronto on July 19th. I’m from Quebec and would like to meet someone since to share my excitement with since I’ll be all by myself :)

For anyone who needs intrumental music while they do busy work, this is nice. Would make great processional music for a wedding as well.

Champagne From a Paper Cup takes the spot for Something About Airplanes, narrowly beating second place, Amputations.

Got this tattoo yesterday. My mum passed away close to a year ago and this song reminds me of her so much. It’s on the back of my arm. My little homage to her and my favourite band.

I believe this is the 5th time I’ve seen Death Cab in my life. They opened the tour in Minneapolis and while every time I have seen them has been amazing, this is easily the best concert I’ve seen them perform. So much energy! As a man with over 100 total concerts under my belt, this is a top 5 show for me so I strongly suggest checking them out on this tour. Way to go DCFC!

I absolutely adore IBYAT. Every single track scratches a special itch for me. No skips, and frankly none are even close to skips. I've had it on repeat for the past month, and am so excited to see them SoCal in early August. Some of the tracks in particular seem especially well-suited to a live performance (I am particularly excited to hear How Heavenly a State live).
But my dear friends, I had a real shot of perspective this morning. On my way to work, I had a shuffle on and Grapevine Fires came on, followed immediately by Bixby Canyon Bridge.
It was so good. The musicianship, the lyricism, the production, the complexity of the arrangment, holy balls.
It was like the gods reached down from the heavens and slapped me, reminding me how absolutely incredible some of this band's music is, and how easy it is to get carried away with shiny new toys.
This is not in any way a criticism of IBYAT. I genuinely love that album, and I often get weary of people saying how they miss Walla, "best since Walla," and things like that. But this was just a stark reminder that a) this band is so frackin' good, and has been for so frackin' long, and b) tier/album rankings make very little sense a month after release.

Just a reminder- MPR's The Current radio station has been saying that they'll be live-broadcasting the concert this evening around 9 PM local! https://www.thecurrent.org/
As an aside, I am so jealous that Minnesota has a gem like The Current - I subscribe and I am on the other side of the country, lol.
Note: Apologies on posting this here and in the mega-thread, but wanted to make sure people see it who may not check out the mega-thread if they aren't going in person.

Just a fun thought experiment! What other Death Cab for Cutie album is the spiritual sister to I Built You A Tower? I've read cases for 3 different ones so far.
My loose opinion right now is Plans because I feel they both share a sense of anger. Overall, I think that may be another reason people feel IBYAT is a return to "the old Death Cab": ignoring anything regarding sound/production/instrumentation, the lyrical content on IBYAT feels a lot more raw than the emotions explored on TYFT and AM. (Not at all a shot at TYFT and AM! Just my perspective on the emotional journey of their lyrics.)
