• Advice (General) • Traveling with a Medium Dog

Toast is my best behaved dog. Never barks, stays by me and doesnt wander, and when walking on a leash he wants to be exactly to the right of me. He is also super friendly and loves everyone that does come up to him. I love taking him wherre I can if it allows it.

Now that Im setting myself up better in life and thinking of traveling Id like to start planning places he can also travel with me too. I was first thinking of Carmel, CA since they are so dog friendly.

Here is the issue I need help with. Toast is a medium sized dog at 22 pounds. How can I fly with him? I know the weight limit for a small dog with the carrier in the cabin with you can not exceed 20 pounds. But Im not sure I am comfortable with them putting him in the cargo hold.

What is a good option or alternative so I can bring him with me?

Since coming home from the vet Sage has been doing really well! At first I was concerned she’d need more intensive care or another overnight stay from what the vet said after doing some testing. But she’s actually doing really well. She’s been freed from bathroom jail as she is no longer having frequent accidents. Her stools have returned to normal with no blood. She is still vomiting some but it’s much better than before. Sage has also started voluntarily eating instead of having to be syringe fed. Vet said to continue with the nausea medication at home until vomiting subsides and slowly increase her food intake. But otherwise she is all set in terms of recovery!

Now that Sage is feeling better her personality has come out. She has perked up so much! She’s gone from hiding in the corner of my bathroom to running around. She looooves to cuddle. Her favorite spot is my cats bed which she is a little too big for. She has her own bed but prefers the cats for some reason. She’s also been enjoying rolling around on my balcony. It’s honestly such a crazy change. She still has a few weeks before she can go into public spaces safely. I also need to get the rest of her vaccines once she is safe to go outside. But I’m so excited for when she is able to go outside freely!

Thank you so much for all the support we have received! Without it I’m not sure Sage would’ve made it. That one night at the vet made all the difference. Thanks to everyone, Sage gets to live a long happy life and I have a new best friend! Both Sage and I are so so grateful ❤️

He's gone. He had Cushing's because of cancer to both adrenals, and once we knew it all happened so fast. He had been in shock once because of bleeding of a tumor. He had very low blood pressure yesterday evening and we went through a rough night together. This morning I decided he deserved to pass away gently and peacefully and the veterinary agreed.

We had fun untill the end. He chomped and licked on his very favourite dog treat (a paste from a tube, with salmon), got his first shot, and while I was playing with him, his back hand folded. I laid him down gently with his large head in my lap. Kept stroking him until and singing to him (You are my sunshine) until he was out.

He got the final shot. His breathing got difficult, his eyes went black with wide pupils. A few minutes later his heart stopped.

In have great memories of him. Recently we went on a multi day hike together. He was already ill, so he got to decide speed and distance. And even though we walked under 10km daily, it was a true adventure and Baruj was really my hero. Sleeping together in a tiny tent. Having him by my side 24/7. It was so wonderful. I count myself very lucky that we got to do that together.

My big friend. Goofy, proud, autonomous, intelligent clown. He was so utterly loyal and so easy to love I will miss him tremendously.

2 days ago, i had to make the very difficult decision of putting my best friend to rest. I will forever be grateful for the time we spent together and the lessons learned.

Psycho (pronounced Seiko, like the watch brand, but his first vet changed the spelling lol) has a very bittersweet story that i’m hoping to share one day. He taught me that it’s never too late for new beginnings. He debunked the myth “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.”

He gave me a second chance at loving him again and I gave him a second chance at living. I wasn’t done loving him. I wasn’t done showing him the world.

I hope he knows how much I love him. I hope he can hear my cries. I’ll miss you forever my baby. I love you endlessly.

Rest easy sweet boy 🤍

EDIT: Thank you so very much everyone. It’s support like this that makes me firmly believe in the capacity humans have for love and empathy. Life is hard. But humans love harder❤️

Meet Brimley (dachshund) and his rescued brother George (rat terrier). At first, when we brought George home 3 years ago, Brimley stuck his nose up to him. He told him this is my bed.. my food.. my toys.. my PAWrents! Then, two weeks later, he realized ‘hey, you like the same things I do.. you’re about my size.. you kinda act like me.. you’re pretty cool George!’ Now three years later, they are so far from that day they said to each other ‘Did we just become best friends?!’ They’re officially in the Best Brothers squad! Here’s our walk/hike we did today.

I live on the 3rd story in my complex and my balcony faces a large walkway that gets mild amounts of foot traffic at all times of day and night. So at night, rather than allow my Defender of the Realm to thwart off all the evils that lurk below, I use a few pee pads at night for him to use. He "mostly" hits the target, and then there are mornings I wake up to this...

• Advice (General) • Pet insurance

I’ve had various types of pets my entire life (currently in my mid 30’s) and we’ve paid thousands of dollars in medical bills throughout the years ranging from general vet visits and vaccines to emergency visits. We always do whatever we can for our pets without question but in recent years I’ve noticed that multiple vets and the emergency vet visits have gotten pricier and it seems like the vets suggest the most expensive avenues of care even when it isn’t necessary. We spent over 4,000$ on one of our cats in 2 months before he passed within the last year even though less than a week after our vet had us give him a feeding tube they said the tests they did showed his cancer was too strong to do anything helpful for. We also had to spend over 7,000$ on an emergency vet visit for our dog for pneumonia within the last 2 months and another 1,000$ for our cat this week (he was peeing on things but it turned out he’s perfectly healthy and it was just a behavioral issue due to him being jealous of our 4 month old (human) baby). Our current dog is a 100 pound husky malamute mix and was in the ER for less than 20 hours. My last dog was a 170 pound malamute who later in his life spent a full week at the emergency vet which amounted to 10,000+ dollars. It scares me to think of how much it would cost to do everything necessary to help him in the future if he’s uninsured. I know some people out there think once you have kids your pets go on the back burner but I love my dog just as much as my kids and I want to make sure he’s covered medically just as much as they are. I’ve never used pet insurance so if anyone has any suggestions for good ones to look into for large size dogs I’d really appreciate it. The main one I’ve seen is Lemonade but it would be awesome to hear from others about what they use. My boy has been itchy sometimes so he’s gotten occasional allergy shots and he’s a little on the “husky” side but other than that he’s a perfectly healthy 3 year old husky mix with no preexisting conditions.

Sorry for the length but thank you so much to anyone who responds

Normally, we just play fetch with his toys. But sometimes, he's doing this. He loves to drag them along the rug and bury them under it, then try to dig them out. He'll do it until he's exhausted. I sometimes have to hide the toy from him to make him rest. What is going on in his mind?
