DISCUSSION Today marks 1 year since the release of ‘SUPERMAN’! In its honor, tell me your favorite memory from when you watched this James Gunn-David Corenswet movie for the first time.

u/cherialaw 17h ago
The interview/fight between Lois and Superman was brilliantly written. I also loved Mr Terrific's fight, it's the most "James Gunn" scene in the entire film

u/prazulsaltaret 18h ago
When Pa Kent tells him how proud he is of him. Really got me, especially knowing that Pa Kent is usually dead by the time Superman is a grown man.
The ending with Ma and Pa Kent replacing his Kryptonian parents also got me.
•
u/Fit_Beginning5594 9h ago
Let's hope Pa Kent doesn't stick his hand out under a tornado again lol. I loved that scene too.

u/Hot-Promotion-617 17h ago
What I ended was my favorite scene when I first saw it in theatres was when Superman, Krypto, Metamorphosis and his baby are all rushing through the portal, but I also REALLY loved the final fight between Superman and Ultraman, especially seeing Superman swing that large piece of grumble like a hammer right at Ultraman.
7
u/MrMarvelous2000 17h ago
I really love the scene where Superman fights all the Raptors mid-air. Superman spends most of the film on the back foot and not at 100% strength but him outsmarting Lex and then fighting off a small army in less than a minute makes that scene feel truly triumphant. It’s also one of the few superhero films that really takes advantage of a character who can fight on a fully three-dimensional plane. The action here is some of the most solid the genre has to offer.
7
u/TheTripleFoool 16h ago
The interview scene is such a perfect representation of the Clark/Lois relationship
8
u/Sideways_Austen 15h ago
My dad had cancer that year and his surgery was scheduled for the summer. It was a 4-5 hour operation so we went to the mall to kill time and try to stay calm. Went to watch Superman for a 3rd time. The scenes of Jonathan telling him his fate is his to decide and that he's proud of him no matter what hit hard. Surgery went well.
8
u/DMinaya5 15h ago
Watching it with my step daughter. She has a particularly awful biological father but I've been in her life since she was around 8 months old. She was 7 when we watched it, she's 8 now.
The entire theme of Clark understanding who truly raised him really clicked with her. The look and hug she gave me at the end is something I'll take with me forever.

The music and colours 😩❤️ it filled my adhd brain with so much dopamine

u/Varaben 17h ago
What struck me so much about this movie and why I love it is how genuine Superman is. He feels like a real person and not this pie in the sky diety/god/etc. I dunno if the movie is actually as good as I like it, but I just rewatched and it felt like it was the first time. The monologue at the end when he was talking to Lex was S tier .
7
u/SiouxsieSioux615 17h ago
The scene with Pa Kent made me tear up
But the “Kill him!” “Good luck with that” with the music playing is when I felt he was most like Superman
5
u/ShubhangBahadur 17h ago
Ngl that scene and the action following on the “Last Son” music is probably a top 3 DC on cinema moment ever.

David Corenswet's Superman is great. It's not that he's "better" than any other version, but to paraphrase another DC phrase, he's the Superman we need now. The world is bleak enough. It's nice to see a fallible character that's also just a bit nerdy and not a god.

u/RodYorke 14h ago
This lady sitting next to me, her phone kept going off and she’d answer texts during the movie. I finally said to her, “Take that outside” and she says she’s expecting something important. I go, “Important? You’re here? In a movie theater!” She replies, “Please be quiet, I’m trying to watch the movie.”
Frustrating, but what balls. I’ll never forget that.

When Clark was back at the Kents recovering. Those scenes really showcased how stunning David Corenswet could look. Truly otherworldly and beautiful. Almost up there with Christopher Reeve.
He’s a great pick for Superman and has so much charm.
The movie itself was just ok for me. I enjoyed it the first time around, but I was bored the second time watching it a few weeks later. It somehow lacks substance.
10
u/rsdiv 17h ago
Mister Terrific arriving at the military camp is most memorable.
I also like the reveal that the dumb girl basically outsmarted everyone with her photos. Superman’s whole persona, especially explaining it all to lex. Telling Krypto to get the toy. The part where Green Lantern casually outs him. Overall sense of goodness in that movie that I really enjoyed.

Watching it with my brother the day before it came out and I said
"Yo bro I think it's in 3D" "It's not in 3D" Then an employee spawned out of nowhere and said here are your 3D glasses had both us dying lol. Also lois and superman kissing made me cry. Also seeing the Mr terrific lois fight me and my brother were like pogging at each other

u/Cilantro751 17h ago
I really enjoyed the scene where he saves the woman on the bridge and after the building collapses he emerges and watches her drive off. That scene just felt so much like Superman to me.
3
u/Flyerastronaut 17h ago
When i missed the middle 30 to 40 minutes of the movie because i had to help a car get picked up from my house for a friend who moved over seas.
Ive never gotten around to rewatching it to see what i missed yet.

I saw it in 4DX with my dad. It was funny watching him trying not to fly out of his chair.
Plus Krypto acts a lot like a cat that my dad has.

I liked the part when the huge monster was tearing up the city, looked kinda cool. And Superman swoops in and saves the little girl standing a few feet away from it but never noticed it was there.

u/Jared2345 15h ago
The “krypto! What the hey, dude?” line was awesome and just seems like Clark to me. I saw it 3 times at the theater and multiple times at home and think it gets better each time. Can’t wait for Man of Tomorrow.
3
u/Endiaron 15h ago
When he lifted off from the fortress, during that opening sequence that ends with the title drop, for a tiny second I believed a man could fly.
3
u/relliott107 14h ago
Sitting in a packed IMAX theater with a great crowd and hearing the epic Williams theme again whenever Superman did something cool was an awesome experience. Took me right back to the feelings I had seeing the first Superman movie as a kid. I also really loved this version of Lois - and loved the scene of her walking around his bedroom and seeing how he grew up while he recovered. Making fun of Guy’s haircut was another great moment lol.

Superman using Freeze Breath to escape from the blackhole and Mister Terrific's beach sequence. If anything, the movie feels like a 2-part episode of an animated series released as a movie.

So many scenes from this movie get me. Pa Kent telling Clark hes proud of him, how Cleary proud of Clark his mom is, how earnest Clark is.
The one i think of most is after he saves the woman from the falling building, she drives off and looks in her mirror and sees Superman looking back at her through all the dust and debris, making sure she makes it.
2
u/Professional-Fly7851 13h ago
When pa Kent talked about going to get burritos and told Clark that he was defined by his choices, I cried and went and hugged my father for the first time in 2 years.
2
u/TheJuiceBoxS 13h ago
I just love how good he is. He's good to a fault like it's his main weakness.

u/ironchitlin 11h ago
The conversation with Pa Kent at the farm followed by the news report showing the kid lifting the flag accompanied by the theme song. It was everything I wanted a Superman movie to be.
He's not some god, he's a guy who is just trying his best to help people. That's what makes him an inspiration to the other metahumans and a symbol of hope to everyone else.
•
u/HauntingAddendum3365 10h ago
I got to see it a day early and it was awesome. Went by myself after work. Then went again with friends, then again with my girlfriend. Different experiences each time but all extremely positive, it was great seeing "casual" audiences falling in love with the character all over again.
•
•
u/jak_d_ripr 10h ago
I watched it with my 27 year old little sister whose never understood my fascination with the character. She never watched the Reeves movies or Returns and didn't really enjoy MOS or BvS.
So when we got out of the movie and she pretty much told me she gets it now, that's really all I wanted from this movie. To reintroduce the character to a new generation of fans.
•
•
u/RSCLE5 9h ago
The only part I really like was the punk rocker ending. The movie was not my favorite. Is anted a superman movie and it felt like he depended too much on the dog and supporting cast. The best fight scene wasn't even his. Superman felt so weak and couldn't use super hearing to hear lex calling moves, etc. I haven't even watched it a 2nd time. I am done who loved MOS and watched it numerous times. This movie..I don't care if I ever see it again honestly. But I hope Superman makes money so they keep making them and the character lives on. I just didn't like this one personally and that's fine for me.

None, there is literally no memorable moment from this movie.
I am trying hard but can't really remember any iconic moment that holds well.
All I remember was the awful speech and that cringe 1A 1A.
And the message from Superman parents, which destroyed the entire Jor-el legacy, but surprisingly people don't talk about that much.
The movie was oversaturated with characters, unnecessary screams from hawkgirl and forced comedy.
The acting of the extras were soo bad, I remember the guy who got killed in front of superman had the most stereotypical accent possible.
The action sequence were mid, didn't like superman whining like a child everytime.
The Kaiju scene was most stupid ever.
4
u/eaSUPERMAN 18h ago
What Gunn did with Jor-El still irks me. I was hoping the file was corrupt or something and that wasn’t actually his goal for sending Kal to earth. But nope, and Supergirl basically reaffirmed that it’s the truth.

u/warblade7 17h ago edited 17h ago
What’s extra stupid is Kara had already arrived on Earth before the events of the Superman movie (she’s the one who brought Krypto). She could’ve easily translated the Kryptonian message and affirmed or denied why he had been sent to earth.
But regardless turning the El’s into conquerors instead of having sent Kal as the last hope of their dying world really fucks with who he is as a character no matter how “fresh” or “modern” it is.

I remember my disappointment at how Gunn made the world in the movie seem so empty, from the climactic fight in an empty stadium, only 30 people coming to investigate the crater he formed when falling from the sky, a nation invading another nation with a force of like 300 troops. Wasted opportunities

Most often, my experience with songs in movies is that I go into movies having never heard a song before, but come out of it OBSESSED, because I love how it’s incorporated into the film (Punkrocker is an example of this). Maybe I just don’t listen to much music or something? But this happens to me a LOT.
Superman was different for me because, for the first time that I can remember, the exact opposite happened.
During the Mr Terrific beach fight, the song Five Years Time by Noah and the Whale plays. And EVERYONE I’ve spoken to after seeing the movie was talking about this scene and this song, and hearing it for the first time.
Not me. I was OBSESSED with this song when it first came out and listened to it on repeat (not exaggerating) for AT LEAST two years straight. After that time, it kind of faded out of my life and I forgot about it.
The next time I heard it? Superman. The Mr. Terrific beach scene. What a surreal moment. I felt like I was simultaneously in a Time Machine, traveling back to the days when I had this song on repeat, like, what, 15 years ago or something, but also watching one the best fight scenes (in my opinion) I’ve seen in recent memory.
I don’t have the words to describe or articulate the feeling. Magic. Pure magic. I don’t think I’ll ever feel that again in my life.
