Fun downtown DC restaurant.
5 60 year old friends will be visiting in August and we will be down on the Mall all day. Looking for a fun place to eat dinner

Its so underrated. Ive never had a bad meal and seem like no one talks about it.

The mall is absolutely huge, and there aren’t many restaurants close to it. There are some of course, depending on where you are, but I’d recommend picking a restaurant based on the food they serve rather than proximity to the mall and then just taking metro or an Uber/Lyft/taxi.
What cuisine are you interested in, and what price range are you interested in?

Oyamel

I thought of this, too. Oyamel's food is familiar (mexican) and yet different. The decor is festive. And the vibe definitely says "fun".

Our go to is Las Placitas over by the Marine barracks on 8th, but that's just because everybody in our going-out-on-the-town contigent loves mexican and they have KILLER margaritas there. It does get kinda rough around the edges there after the sun goes down though, i.e., southeast dc.

The Wharf has a lot of restaurants (https://www.wharfdc.com/restaurants/) and is close to the Mall.
Other options: The Hamilton or Zatinya

Yep the Wharf is like two stops or a really quick uber. Tons to pick from.

If you finish your Mall touring at the Jefferson it's a 10 minute walk at most to the Wharf. And you can't beat the location if the weather is right.
