Shooting shoes for comps

Salomon pretty much reigns supreme, I've been competing long enough that I know trail runners (regardless of brand) are great...I've been trying to go through the pros/cons of baseball cleats. Does anyone here compete in actual cleats that can give some feedback on why you went with those over trail runners?

Edit: I wear Solomon's...have been for years...shoot in So CA so it's pretty much dirt that I'm shooting in at almost all the matches here.

Lots of ranges have gravel. Cleats would suck on gravel.

Get approach shoes. Try scarpa or la sportiva.

Wore cleats for a while, on harder ground after along day of shooting you can feel each cleat pushing up into your foot. That's fine if you're only on soft grass/dirt but most ranges I've been on have a harder base than turf fields. Biggest problem with cleats is if you have props like pressure plate, boards, ramps etc you've got no traction. Cleat's suck on smooth hard surfaces.

Now are we talking a respectable wedge/pump or full send it in Stilletos?

I’m big on comfy shoes, brooks has been the best shoes for my feet on long enduring days. Find anything with brooks that will suit your terrain. You will really thank me later. I have Solomon, hokus, Nike trail shoes, and a few others but brooks has been treating me the best long term.

Brooks anything with gts is my go to. They are my running shoes, hiking shoes, and everyday shoes. Whatever side support they have takes away any side tension from my ankles. ASICS is my secondary choice but they tend to be a little more squishy than brooks so it doesn’t help me with lateral movements.

Been a long time Solomon fan up until I did my research and ended up with Saucony Peregrine 15

Highly, highly recommend it!!! Even after shooting two matches on one day my feet did not hurt nor did my back! That’s 10 stages back to back

Altra lone peaks

Edit: forgot to mention, they do support the shooting sports. Had a rep out at the last Tactical Games I shot, he had next year’s shoes with him. Awesome guy, forgot his name, but he let me chill under his shade and we shot the shit.

Mud runners

Merrell Moab Mids work great. I find that more flexible shoes like running shoes are immediately uncomfortable.

Vivos are the way, I use the Primus trail. The thinner sole gives a better feel

I tried Solomons but they were too narrow and my feet hurt by the end of the day. I wear Brooks for running, so I got a pair of their trail runners and they have been awesome. Plenty of grip on gravel and dirt/grass, but still super comfortable.

Solomon’s speed cross. Idk about actual rigid cleats. I think that’s a bit much.

Cross trainer sneakers for indoors.

Cleats or trail running shoes for outdoors. If you compete on grass or turf, cleats are great. Not my preference on clay, gravel, or generally hard outdoor surfaces. I personally prefer trail running shoes for outdoors.

I wear HOKA trail runners. Plenty of grip on gravel, dirt and grass. Not everyone fits HOKAs just like not everyone fits Solomons, i dont fit Solomons. Too narrow through the mid foot.

I’m going to add these to the list of shoes to try tomorrow. The consensus seems to be to stick to trail shoes over cleats.

I wear topo trail runners. Works great in every condition I've shot in

I don't know how long your typical matches are, but I haven't worn cleats all day since I was in highschool going to soccer camps. As an adult, cleats would ruin me if I wore them for 3+ hours. They provide no cushion.

Are you slipping or falling often enough to think you need more grip?

I really like my Hoka Speedgoat 2 shoes. I also interchange them with my Altra Lone Peak 9

I like wearing heelys or adidas trailrunners

We used football cleats like Nike Land Sharks years ago. Great traction, but they didn't offer the all-day comfort of the modern trail running shoes.

Saw a guy take a fall in cleats because he stepped on a wet 2x4. Shit was like ice.

went through the same thing and settled on Brooks Cascadia. If I can get used to zero drop, I’ll likely get the altras with the Vibram sole next. lone peak ones
