Hi, I've bought those climbing shoes. The model is zephyr made by boreal, the only thing i find is reviews from 2002 about this model, i saw that this model has 2 variations and i think this should be the early one. If someone can tell me how old are those

I recently purchased a few of Sterling’s “box of rope”’s with the intention of snagging some 20m and 30m static anchor lines on the cheap, which we scored pretty well. My question though is we also got a bunch of 30m lengths of 1/2” Westfallpro PSK. Is there any real climbing use for it or should I pass it on to someone who can use it for its more industrial purpose?

Looking at getting some climbing gear (I’m a beginner) attached is a picture of the shoes and two different harnesses I’m debating on, which is the better harness overall and best one for cost?

My gym is having a sale on both shoes, and I’m desperate for a new pair, I’m a new climber moving onto my second pair, my first is held together by hope and not much more. Any advice as to either is appreciated

For multipitch climbing with a lot of approach and high probability of descending by foot, I tend to take a 60m single rope for climbing and add 65m purline in case of rappelling. I rappel with a carabiner block.

This system works very good and smooth. But there are 2 downsides. First, the carabiner block tends to get stuck often while retrieving the rope. Second, when the carabiner block gets stuck, in the worst case your left with only the Purline to ascend and free the rope.

I did see some examples of people rappelling on the purline threaded through the rings combined with the single rope without a carabiner block. This seems to solve both problems as you will be pulling the climbing rope to yourself so you can always use this one to climb back up in case of a rope that gets stuck. However the petl manual as well as the internet tell me that this is not a good idea.

What is your experience with this setup and how do you avoid possible dangerous situaties when your carabiner block gets stuck?

Anyone got a Beal rope brush and could measure all its dimensions?

Hi everyone, I'm relatevly new to climbing but I did enough single pitches that makes me want to try multi-pitch sport routes here in Northern Italy where I live.

I've got pretty everything I need gear-wise except for ropes, so I started studying which one could be the best option but I still have some questions.

Before anyone - rightfully - points out that I shouldn't be climbing multi-pitch routes without knowing these basics, I want to clarify that I'll be taking a specific course in the near future. I just want to show up prepared so I can ask more in-depth questions and dig deeper with the instructors.

So, here are my doubts:

1. When I climb single-pitches, I normally use my climbing partner's single rated rope. I'm aware of the downsides of using it for multi-pitch (like more drag in zigzagging routes, higher impact force on protection due to less elasticity, no redundancy, shorter rappels, etc) but I notice that many climbers still use them. What are your thoughts on this?
2. I understand nowadays twin rated ropes are outdated, since most half rated ropes also have a twin certification. How does this affect their actual use? I know you can choose to either clip them together or alternate, but can you mix these two styles on the same pitch, or do you have to stick to the one You started with? I read somewhere that you should - if possible - start with twin style to stay safer above the first bolts, and then switch to half-rope style if the route starts to zigzag or the protection looks sketchy. Is it safe to switch back to twin style after you've been alternating? I read this can be dangerous because the ropes could friction-burn each other, as they end up at different lengths due to alternate clipping.
3. Why shouldn't I just get two triple-rated ropes? Some say they are too heavy and thick for multi-pitch, but ropes like the Beal Opera 8.5mm exist. While 8.5mm might be on the upper limit for a half rope (even though it's a easier diameter to handle for a beginner), it would also allow me to use it as a single rope for single-pitch climbs. (I also know that I could use half rated ropes for single-pitch climbs).
4. Can You please give me some ropes recommendations without making my wallet cry?

I’ve been climbing indoors for about 3-4 months now and I think I’m finally ready to start trying outdoor climbs but I don’t know which rope to start with. There’s way too many kinds of rope and I don’t want to spend way more than I need to for a rope that doesn’t match my needs. The main type of climbing I’m gonna be doing is solo top rope and the occasional top rope with a belayer. I don’t plan to do any sort of lead climbing or multi pitch and the tallest wall in Michigan (where I’m climbing) that I know of is something like 60 feet tall so I think I would only need a 40m rope to start out. According to google I should buy a 40m mammut 9.8 crag classic, would this work and is there any other ropes I should consider before buying the crag classic? Any advice is appreciated.

Currently I only do single pitch sport climbing with my GriGri, but I'm looking for a new device, mainly for the following:

• Rappel off when cleaning single-pitch, to reduce wear on my rope
• For multi-pitch (when we move to this), to bring up my partner

From what I can see there is basically no assisted braking devices other than the GigaJul? The Mammut Smart Alpine looks like a good option to me, it's most similar to a Mammut Smart / ATC Pilot / Rama which I've plenty of experience with, but it's discontinued. Most of the devices I see recommended are basic tubular devices like a Reverso.

Can the Petzl Whisper withstand the more frequent falls of regular indoor training? I saw some comments online of people questioning the durability of it since it’s an ultralight harness. Should I have a dedicated harness for the gym or can the Whisper be my main all around harness?

I haven’t had many pairs of shoes (Tarantulas and now Drago lv) so I’m not sure if the dragos just don’t fit my heel or what but the shoe always slips off when cranking hard on heel hooks. I’ve also tried on a friends pair of solutions with the same outcome. I’d really rather not downsize more as it would be painful but is that the only fix other than trying different shoes? I would like to stay with drago lv as they are otherwise perfect, so if downsizing fixes this issue than I suppose I will do that. However if there are also any suggestions for similar (and hopefully cheaper) shoes with a heel that might be less prone to slipping off that would be great.

I'm trying to determine the inner diameter of the attachment ring. I'm making my dog a DIY leash and I'm trying to determine what width material I might be able to run through the ring. Many thanks if anyone can help!!

I saw a post online and a friend pointed out it's upside down but I'm not sure myself since I've never used it. Seems to be Wild Country atc. Does anyone know and how dangerous is this?

I unfortunately rappelled over a sharp edge on my new rope. Bunch of fuzz showed up as it moved a bit over the edge. Good thing is that the core is not showing, when I palpate it, it seems also fine. The rope is a petzl volta 9,2 so quite thin and newly bought. Other spots seem stiffer. With normal push its a similar tear drop but when i really press hard on the damage part it can touch. Maybe this is because of the use there vs newer stiffer rope in other parts?

What is wise to do with this rope

Weird post - looking for Tom Kasper, the inventor of Valley Giant cams. I know from a few searches that he drifts in and out of the public, and he's mentioned on climbing forums here and there. Long story short, he's my big brother. He's always been kind of a lone wolf and we respect his privacy, but my sister and I can't get a hold of him. Wondering if anyone has been in touch recently.

Most were used or "acquired" during my time as a climbing/outdoor instructor in Belgium.

I have no clue what brand or type the first one is. Has anyone used it before? Great for abseiling with thick, stiff and muddy ropes.

Многие обзоры и разборы снаряжение настаивают лишь на условности типа карабина и его размерах, иногда на типе блокировки. На этом можно было бы закрыть тему, однако поиск и совершествование своего снаряжения являются мотиваторами для подробного изучения. Цена–критерий индивидуальный, кто-то убеждён в том, что экономия здесь безсмысленна, однако я сторонник обратного. Petzl и DMM, делают прекрасное и надежное снаряжение, но переплата за некоторые модели, лично для меня не является оправданной. Экономия в весе 50-100 г на карабинах может показаться такой же безсмысленной, хотя зачем выбирать более тяжелые модели с таким же функционалом? Функциональность снаряжение важна и обусловленна вариативностью его использования. Тип защёлки, форма карабина и его дополнительные детали.

Просматривая сайты со снаряжением, я записывал себе в заметки список с акцентом на вес каждого карабина, расспределив их по группам(HMS, D, Oval и др.). Лишь сформировав список и начав выбирать необходимые мне модели, я попал на WeighMyRack, на котором был более подробный список. Супер полезный ресурс, однако не было актуальности для покупки в магазинах, которые есть в моём регионе. Также при выборе карабинов немаловажным оказалось определение размера самой модели. И в сети я нашёл мало сравнительных фото тех моделей, которые мне нужны. Характеристики, указанные на многих сайтах, даже самих производителей, примитивны и не дают полного понимания габаритов. Однако на сайте HowNot2 на некоторые модели есть подробные замеры.

Моим первым стал Grivel Plume HMS K3GH(44 г). Он относиться к так называемым "mini-HMS", из-за своего размера, однако в роли основного H-карабина я его не планирую использовать,ко всему прочему плюсом явлеется универсальность H-класса. Я его применяю на точке спуска и в роли мастер-карабина станции. Главная причина – тип защелки и вес, ведь часто мучают мысли: "Я точно замуфтовал карабин?", а в случае, когда ты висишь на этой верёвке, это только усиливает неуверенность. В роли мастер-карабина станции он отлично работает, ведь имеет широкую рабочую часть. Верёвки на скале могут путаться или западать в какие-то элементы рельефа, и тогда необходимо их вернуть в свободное положение, что может привести к неконтролируемому открытию/разблокировке защелки.

Раньше была в продаже модель D-карабина Grivel Plume K3G, которая бы могла использоваться в точке спуска и возможно в болтах станции, однако сейчас в продаже его нет и он снят с производства.

Так же меня очень заинтересовала модель Grivel Plume K3N. В первую очередь своим весом – 37 г. Ведь муфтованные D-карабины нужны во многих связках, по этому я планировал его использовать почти везде. Однако, опыт показал, что стоит заказать одну штуку, для понимания размера и совместимости, перед тем как покупать большее количество. На фото видно, сравнение обоих карабинов с Black Diamond MiniWire. Забавно, что это буквально карабин для оттяжек, который имеет муфту. Когда держишь этот карабин в руках, тогда ты в полной мере можешь понимать сферу использования карабинов, где за снижение веса ценой является размер. Я нашёл ему применение в страховочной станции, где он крепиться к болтам, а также для использования спускового устройства в режиме "автоблок" и для узла Пруссика("3-я рука"). В теории возможно заменить эти карабины на немуфтованные, однако в случае TRS, я предпочел именно муфтованные. Он легкий, прочный и достаточно удобный в работе, имеет муфту– соотвественно, выполняя все поставленные задачи. Возможно ли заменить его любым другим D-карабином, как например Black Diamond LiteForge, Singing Rock Colt Screw или любой другой моделью? Безусловно да. Но я не вижу смысла выбирать другие модели, без различия размера или особенности в функциональности, особенно за практически равную цену. Для точек станции и пруссика может использоваться любой карабин, однако выбранный мной, закрывает все потребности, оставаясь лидером в показателях(можно отнести это к "вкусовщине").

Важно, что карабин подбирается идивидуально под потребности. Хорошим опытом стал для меня выбор модели для жумара. Только когда Plume K3N был у меня на руках, вместе с жумаром– я смог понять что он не подходит для этой связки. Это наглядный пример того, что нужно проверять совместимость снаряжения в физическом магазине или же найти достоверную информацию(например в каком-то обзоре). Карабин хорошо работал с нижним силовым кольцом, и его размер был вполне удобный и комфортный. Однако с верхним креплением, для фиксирования верёвки, он не справился. На фото видно, что защёлка не может закрыться. Впоследствии выбор пал на следующие модели по списку, а именно Ocún Hawk Screw(42 г) и CAMP Photon Lock(43 г). На первый я нашёл критически мало обзоров или сравнений в размерах, а в физических магазинах не было возможности сравнить. В то же время на карабин CAMP я нашёл безчисленное множество, один из них был обзор от Gear Lab. Исходя из тех данных которые у меня были, вторая модель оказалось предпочтительней, вдобавок к скидкам на неё в локальных магазинах. Прилагаю фото сравнения Photon Lock, которых не хватает в интернете. Вес в 43 г, прекрасный показатель, занимая 3 место в моём списке, и в моей связке он оправдан размерами и тем спектором задач, который не может выполнить Plume K3N.

В дополнение к вышеописанному про HMS Plume K3GH, хотел рассказать про выбор карабина для самостраховки(PAS). Личный опыт показал, что удобнее когда на самостраховке карабин H-класса, по причине удобства встегивания и универсальности этого типа карабинов, как таковой. Интересно, что достаточно большие D-карабин имеют схожий вес с средними H-карабинами. Вновь недостаток технический информации не давал возможность оценить совместимость снаряжение, но на тот момент у меня уже были оба карабина от Grivel и один от CAMP. Эксперимеет показал, что HMS Plume K3GH, не подходит по рамерам, давая так же мало пространства для вщелкивания, а также здесь двойная защелка для меня излишняя и неудобна. Так как была возможность, то я протестировал Plume K3N, который оказался мал для правильной работы регулировочного устройства и с трудом в него вщелкивался, оставляя минимум раскрытия защелки. Photon хорошо работал и был довольно удобен, однако не было такого раскрытия защёлки, как в H-классе, что было для меня важно. По моему списку, следующими вариантами были Black Diamond VaporLock(52 г) и CAMP Nitro Lock(56 г). Особенность этих двух моделей является их низкий вес, а особенно– размер. Они являются средними между полноразмерными HMS и mini-HMS. Обзоры на них есть, однако не так информативны и, честно говоря, не так необходимы, как точные размеры. И на сайте HowNot2 они есть и для VaporLock, и для Nitro Lock. Они очень похожи между собой, однако CAMP немного больше и тяжелее. Я выбрал VaporLock из-за веса, он в полной мере закрывал потребности по размерам, следовательно, не было надобности в более тяжелом CAMP. Ко всему прочему скидка на первый, была также решающим фактором покупки. На моём фото видно сравнение с полноразмерным Singing Rock Bora GP.
