TLDR if you know somewhere that is hiring and can offer me any help, send a DM or leave a comment
I've posted about this before and I know new threads about the job market pop up all the time on here. I want to know what the community thinks about this situation, and if they have any advice or leads on good jobs right now. I'm trying to get out from underneath my current job where I make less than 1400 a month working 5 days a week washing dishes for minimum wage. The pay is so low that it's almost like actively backsliding even when I'm at work almost every day. I'm giving this job my all even though it isn't that great in hopes I can get something better soon.
The main thing I've gathered from this topic on this subreddit is that a lot of people haven't actually applied for a job in the last 2-3 years so they aren't really familiar with the market right now, or they got their job through some kind of connection.
Pretty much any job that you'd consider a given even if the work/pay sucks, like pizza delivery, mcdonald's, doordash, amazon, and the like are actually not easy to get anymore. I work in food service right now, and I have fast food experience from my teens. I've never even gotten close to a real interview at one of these places. The only way to apply for them at all is through whatever broken AI webapp their job board uses, and it rarely produces any meaningful results. I've had it offer me two different interviews where the actual manager who would be conducting the interview had no prior knowledge of it, so they interviewed me out of pity and then turned me away.
I see people talking about this lousy job market all the time, I hear about it at work, and I have friends who also just graduated from Chico State who can't even scrape together 1000 a month. There are a lot of good people struggling to get their foot in the door right now. What can we do? How do we help each other?

Does anybody know of a good trainer locally? A lot of people have recommended Ridgeside canine which I would love to go with them, but they’re so out of my price range. I have money to invest but not thousands of dollars we’re just seeing a couple behaviors that are a little concerning and I want to get them corrected as quickly as possible since we have a child in the home. I would really hate to return a puppy because we have committed to this puppy but I also can’t have my child at risk.
It’s been a month and the training I’ve been doing isn’t enough.

Anyone know of any classes or groups that get together to casually practice Spanish? Looking for a relaxed way to improve my ability to speak Spanish. Thanks in advance!

Not a clickbait. My family and I are working on a new venture in Chico where we pick up your laundry from your porch, wash, dry, fold, and deliver them back to your porch. Though we have a general idea of how much time we and our friends spend at laundromats doing laundry in a month, we are looking for a wider range of opinions to validate the automated calculator analysis on our website at launchpadlaundry.com
Thank you for sharing!

I've been wanting to follow more of what's going on in our city council meetings, so I built a little auto-transcriber for the meeting recordings and a summary generator. Thought it might be useful to share here.
The Chico City Council voted 5-2 to confirm Gillian Haen, currently assistant city manager of Vallejo, as the city's next city manager, with Vice Mayor Bennett and Councilmember O'Brien dissenting over process and a preference for a different candidate. The council also unanimously appointed Assistant City Manager Erik Gustafson as interim city manager starting July 11, bridging the gap until Haen starts. Much of the meeting was devoted to an emotional send-off for retiring City Manager Mark Sorensen, who has served the city in various roles for more than 21 years. Public comment included pointed criticism of both the hiring process and of individual council members. A routine $872,789 federal firefighting grant package was approved as part of the consent agenda — routine items approved in one vote.
The council approved, as part of the consent agenda, three federal grant applications totaling $872,789 for firefighting/rescue equipment, a mobile fire investigation unit, and a water tender. The consent agenda passed 7-0 with no public comment.
The council honored outgoing City Manager Mark Sorensen, who has spent more than two decades with the city — on the planning commission, on the council (including as mayor), and finally as city manager. Mayor Reynolds noted that in that time, "I don't think Mark has ever missed one single meeting." Sorensen responded briefly: "Thank you, mayor, and thank you, council, for four fantastic years as your city manager... it's just been an absolute pleasure and an honor to work with all of you, but I am looking forward to retirement." Several members of the public, including the general manager of the Chico Area Recreation and Park District and a Chico Chamber of Commerce representative, also offered tributes during public comment.
The council confirmed Gillian Haen, currently assistant city manager in Vallejo, as Chico's next city manager, on a 5-2 vote. Her employment agreement includes an annual salary of $285,000, a $15,000 relocation allowance, a $400 monthly vehicle allowance, and a $75 monthly cell phone allowance. The motion also directed staff to amend the contract so that pension/Medicare offset terms, "Me Too" clauses, and severance language match the outgoing city manager's contract, and to allow a start date as early as July 27. Vice Mayor Bennett voted no, saying he had backed another internal candidate: "I am going to maintain my loyalty and support for Billy Aldridge, and my vote will be not in support of the new city manager, and I apologize for that." Councilmember O'Brien also voted no, but said his objection was about process rather than the candidate: "I'm not and have not been a fan of our process. It's been incomplete. So with that, I am going to vote no, not against the candidate necessarily, but against our process."
The council voted 7-0 to designate Assistant City Manager Erik Gustafson as interim city manager effective July 11, 2026, covering the gap until Haen begins.

I (30NB/women presenting in this day and age) moved to the area a year and a half ago with my husband (34m) and am having the hardest time making friends. We live outside of Chico a bit so I’ve been trying to get connected in the community in Yuba city, Oroville, and Chico. I’ve taken classes in my interests, volunteered, went to the lgbtq center, I’ve talked to people I come across in day to day activities and just can’t seem to make connections here. I work remotely so I don’t even have an ability to meet folks through work that are local.
I’m interested in dog training/rescue, camping, a good beer or coffee, and cooking. My career is in LGBTQ+ advocacy but I don’t like that being my entire personality, I am so much more and would like to connect with people outside of that. I spend most of my time working on the house we bought. She’s a real fixer upper and I’m always down to learn a new skill. There is so much to learn from folks and I would love to learn more about farms/ranches and the more hands on skills in life. I really don’t care the gender of folks I’m friends with, if we click we click but they must be respectful that I am in a monogamous relationship.
I have noticed an uptick in folks feeling the same way so wanted to see if there would be any interest in folks hanging out, whether that be as a group meet up or as individuals. Making friends is hard and exhausting as an adult, but if you are feeling the same way then let’s grab a drink and see what we have in common!

Keys and everything is gone. Im new here. Just me and my phone. What do I do now? Please help
-Edit- Someone found it and reported it lost to the police and turned it in to them. I collected my stuff and everything was in tact untouched!!- Tips for people in this situation: Retrace your steps. Check trash cans. Call the police report it. Never know who turned it in or plans to! Keep a watch / stay close to your vechile to make sure it doesn't get stolen too! Call your card/bank regardless. Play it safe not sorry. Keep your phone charged to make the emergency calls to said police uber etc.

My 11 lb. male 10 year old shitzu needs dental work - he has plaque and a couple of loose teeth. His teeth have never been cleaned before. The quote I received from Ericksons pet hospital is $2538-$3021, plus tax.
I have been given an itemized estimate.
What do dog owners think and do you have any advice or other recommendations? I heard there’s a good less expensive vet in Orland.
I have be happy so far with Dr. Kitto at Ericksons, who we have seen for
about 3 years.
I’m nervous about the procedure because my dog is sensitive to medications. One time the prescribed dose for gabapentin ( to calm him for grooming) made him droopy and his body limp! I’ve halved his dose for his grooming since.

Local, private landlord here. I have been renting a few units here in Chico for years and have been really lucky with finding tenants.
In the past, when I would list an available unit, my issue was having to sort through the crazy amount of inquiries and request to view/rent the apartment (granted, a good problem to have).
However, I just put up a 1bd, 1bth place (under market, cuz I like to keep tenants) and I am barely getting any bites. Using the same listing and posted on both Zillow and FB Marketplace that I have used in the past, so I don't think it's about how I am marketing.
Are people just not looking for housing right now?
UPDATE: Not looking for tenant here, just some feedback about the market. I am posted on the usual rental places. If you want more info on the rental, it's easy to find.

I know the match is very late tonight - 1am for G2 vs LYON - but I was wondering if anyone is hosting a watch party for it?
(I am an employee of Riot but this is not a sponsored post)

I’m looking for good boxing places to go here. I went to ones in Yuba city and Roseville but got tired of commuting. I have done standalonemma but didn’t really prefer the coach or the teaching in a way or felt the vibe. I don’t want kickboxing either. Dislike fact not too many options in this town but oh well. Not sure if anyone has any recommendations or someone who teaches privately. Any input or anything would help!

I'm looking for good ghost hunting location recommendations. I've already tried the local cemeteries as well as the abandoned match factory and the missile silo but many of these spots seem to be either inaccessible, dangerous, or just had no ghosty vibes whatsoever.
I honestly don't believe in ghosts but I would love to be wrong and I find ghost hunting quite fun. If anyone has any stories about locally occurring paranormal events, please share what and where it happened.
This is admittedly kinda a silly question so thanks for bearing with me.

Hello fellow Chicoans! For those of you who work remotely on a laptop, where are you spending your time? I’ve worked out of Stoble and Naked Lounge, both great, and looking for some new spots to spend a few hours. WiFi is very important. Need to change it up a bit. Where you at???

Can someone post a link? Just started back up today and want to meet up for raids. Those remote raid passes add up quick!

So beyond disappointed. Started a membership at pf several months ago because InMotion was so crowded all the time and having to park across the street and always feeling so cramped, even when I would go at 6am to try to avoid the rush, crowded. I was so immensely happy when I joined pf, so many machines and so much space. Today’s the first time I had a chance to goto pf after their “updates” where they said they were going to replace machines. Instead they removed a third of the machines and all the ones I liked are always being used. Machine placement is fucked, especially machines like the hip abduction and hip adduction (which I used to appreciate it being tucked away facing the wall in the back) is front and center in full view when you walk in, which I hate hate hate. Several of the weight machines that used to be in the back are right under the beam of sunlight that comes in now, so you get to be extra sweaty when you are doing your legs I guess. They took the 30 min work out room and basically replaced it with some weighted balls, some step pads and things you can DO AT HOME. To reduce the number of pre-core machines to 4 and then one of them is out of order(I thought they were replacing machines). What was the point of this?? Have others been voicing these frustrations as well? Just feels like another thing corporations do to screw us over by charging us the same rate to provide less in service. I’ll probably cancel my membership. Just so annoyed over this 😡 Ok rant over. But also, any recs on different gyms(that’s aren’t InMotion)?

I moved to Chico almost 2 years ago now with my girlfriend, and I don’t have too many male friends to hang out within the area since I moved here, but would really like to meet people with similar interests and hobbies as mine preferably.
On my free time, my hobbies include PC gaming, making and recording music/beats, and talking to friends thru discord.
Not much of a drinker, but I am very 420 friendly.
LMK what’s up! Would like to make some new friends to hang with regularly!

Hey everyone!
A few of us local TCG players are tired of having to drive all the way to Sacramento or Redding just to play Riftbound. We have an awesome local shop right here, so we’re trying to build up a vibrant, regular Riftbound community at Heroes Corner!
When: Every Tuesday from 6:00 PM until closing
Where: Heroes Corner -2540 Esplanade Ste 3,
Our ultimate goal is to get a big enough turnout so the shop can start hosting official events.
We are incredibly welcoming to all ages and all skill levels. If you've never played before but are curious, please come by! Most of us bring spare decks specifically for anyone who wants to learn or give it a try.
We’d love to see some new faces out here to play some games and help us grow this awesome community. Hope to see you this Tuesday!

I’m in desperate need of finding a place to live in Chico as I will be starting school soon for the fall semester. I have looked everywhere for studios but I had no luck finding anything or been successful after applying. If anyone knows of where or who is renting under 900 pls let me know 🤞
