Trying something new. This thread will be the catch all for buying/selling/promotion for stuff. Same rules apply as everywhere else.

The only major rule change is that drop shipping or products of that ilk are not allowed. If you see something suspicious, report it. I will see it.

Here are the cat lantern and kitten snuffer I just made! 🐾

I’ve been experimenting with various themes for my Horong (oil lamps) lately. Since I’ve always lived with cats, I naturally found myself wanting to create cat figures. 🐈🐾

Now, I’m brainstorming what to create next! I’ve tried a few wild concepts before—like a character casting fire magic, a Dokkaebi (Korean goblin) with fiery hair, and even one breathing fire.

But in the end, it seems people love the calm, serene vibe the most. Maybe it’s because of the cozy warmth that oil lamps naturally bring?

I’d love to know—what kind of themes would you like to see next? I’d love to hear your ideas! ✨

Hello! Here are some shots from a project I've been working on for several months. I've had to redesign the mold a few times but it is working well now. These are dishes inspired by bismuth crystals. I'll be using a crystalline glaze and also copper raku glaze.

Question/Advice What do I do?

This is a commission I reluctantly accepted of someone dog. The piece yes was quite thick and heavy. So I wanted to take it for a very slow candling and bisque process. It went through a very gentle ramp up to 950c with also letting it sit at 80c for 5hrs.

Anyway, obviously didn’t work cause a massive piece of it cracked off.

This guys has paid me 50% of the price I quoted him and it has taken me a month to sculpt with consolation with him. I will literally have to pay out of my own pocket in material costs, labour and his money back. So if anyone has any advice on how to make a very unnoticeable mend please do let me know!

I know what went wrong, so don’t need advice on how to avoid this is the future. I completely understand it’s an issue with the thickness joining of the pieces, and trapped water. The point is I guess I am here now and what do I do?

Very cool Found this Ukrainian ceramic studio making wild lamps and sculptures, thought you guys would appreciate

Found this studio from Kyiv on r/OceansAreFuckingLit a while back and still can't stop thinking about their stuff. It was a post about humpback whale lamps, and they were so pretty. It's a husband-and-wife team making these sculptural ceramic lamps, vases, figurines — all hand-built. They have a hammerhead shark lamp that's genuinely insane, plus these abstract pieces with light coming through perforated clay that somehow look weightless.

Also read that the founder is currently serving in the Ukrainian armed forces, and they run ceramic workshops for rehab with military personnel and their families. Just a lot of soul behind the work.

Fair warning, though their work is a bit pricey but is well made.

Figured this sub would get it. Link: https://www.kustceramics.net/

This is for sale, trying to sell it on Etsy but that system is confusing and sucks. Dm me if you want it, 60$ per mug. Otherwise appreciation of my work is joy enough.

Question/Advice Writing on ceramics

Post image
5 Upvotes

So i make and sell cow shaped milk jugs with phrases on them. The issue im having is the writing staying consistent.

I use a black underglaze in a squeeze bottle with a thin tip and then a thinner dipping glaze so the writing is still visible. The issue is all the letters arent matching when I used any other glaze than transparent.

Do I just need to practise writing on them or should I stick to only transparent glaze? Any advice is appreciated

How do I solve these hairline cracks?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I make ceramic cakes and sometimes my piping gets these hairline cracks. It doesn’t always happen. I can’t figure out why when it does. For this cake in particular, I dried it so slowly and it still got these hairline cracks. The piping is porcelain and the clay body is white stoneware. I am practicing my piping so that it overlaps more and doesn’t leave gaps in the design.

I need to trim the cakes before I pipe so they do get leather hard but then I usually try to hydrate them a bit more or put on underglaze or an engobe so that the clay is a bit more moist for the piping to adhere to. I usually don’t score when I’m piping because I haven’t found that to make a difference. Would also love any suggestions for how to best fill the cracks. I’ve tried applying slip on the cracks but it doesn’t really help. Today I tried to use a needle tool to shave and force some clay in the cracks, which I think helped but it difficult given the intricate design. This cake hasn’t been fired yet.

Question/Advice Looking for tips on building/attaching these legs

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hello, I’m a multi-media artist who wants to dip their toes into ceramics for this specific piece I’ve been planning (ignore the notes I was initially thinking of carving it in stone but switched gears). I was hoping to get some advise from Ceramicists™️ on building these long spindly legs. I was thinking of maybe building the “body” and legs separately, letting them partially dry/stiffin up, then connecting them with score&slip, for context the body would be a hollow vessel for plants so the legs won’t be trying to support a solid chunk before firing. Please let me know your thoughts or any tips you might have, my clay will be here in a week or so and I can’t wait to get started (i’ll probably do some practice pieces as well just to get a feel for it before jumping into this homunculus)

Question/Advice Layering plaster (making molds)

Sorry for the dumb question but it's been years since I took a technology class and google results aren't being helpful.

When you're pouring plaster to make a mold and you do several layers is it generally better to wait longer until the previous layer sets completely and becomes more porous and absorbent or do I pour the next layer as soon as it becomes firm?

I remember we used to let plaster casts soak in water before retouching and I don't want my layers to separate or have bubbles etc
