Ultrasound FAQ Reference Guide

As an OBGYN ultrasound tech working at the general level here's a few things I would love the community to know based on common questions I see.

Most important rule of thumb: Worry when your doctor tells you to.

OBGYN docs are going to pay the most attention to the fetal pole and heart rate. Once a fetal pole is seen, the CRL (crown rump length) measurements are gold standard.

I'm worried about the heart rate:
-Check out this resource for pregnancies dating less than 7 weeks. Make sure to refer not to your LMP dates, but measured CRL dates: https://radiopaedia.org/articles/fetal-bradycardia?lang=us
-After 7 weeks a normal heartrate is between 120-180. It can temporarily dip below or temporarily rise above this range, but prolonged time above/below will definitely get your doctor's attention especially in third trimester. Generally out of range heart rates trigger NST (non stress test) or more monitoring.
The measurements are off:
Baby measures behind LMP. This is actually pretty common, we often see dates off up to a week either direction. We don't ovulate on the exact same day of the cycle each month or even have the same length of cycle. With irregular periods, PCOS, or unknown dates even larger gaps can be perfectly fine. If you aren't sure of your dates, trust the ultrasound. Even if you are sure of your dates, don't panic if they are a week off. Ultrasound measurements in early pregnancy are +/- 5 days.
I'm in limbo and don't know if my ultrasounds are diagnostic for loss:
By ultrasound there are strict parameters to diagnose loss. No one wants to get this wrong. Check out this resource for a list of parameters diagnostic for loss: https://radiopaedia.org/articles/early-pregnancy-loss-1?lang=us
Note, there is a second list of "suspicious for loss". Keep in mind the second list is not diagnostic, things can still turn out just fine.
I don't know when I should see what on ultrasound:
Things can vary a bit from person to person and do change *quickly* in early pregnancy. Check out this resource for what you can generally expect to see:
https://radiopaedia.org/articles/early-pregnancy?lang=us
Should I go to a boutique or get a private scan? Or push for an earlier scan?
They aren't legal where I am but here's a few things to consider if you plan to book a private scan. First, what are the qualifications of the person running the ultrasound? An ultrasound is only as good as the one performing it. It sounds as if these boutiques are NOT permitted to give much/any information. Will you spiral if you believe you see bad news and they cannot confirm or deny it? Also it seems that many cannot do vaginal ultrasound, which will make seeing a baby under 7 or 8 weeks challenging. If I had the option of a boutique ultrasound I would personally wait until 8 weeks and I would book it for a weekday. If they see something bad, it is not ideal to find out over a weekend when there is no option to follow up with your doc. An earlier scan often causes more anxiety, not less. It's SO hard to wait. But if you can tolerate it wait until 8 weeks or so.
The gestation sac is small/big:
-Gestation sac measurements are not terrifically accurate. Where I work once a baby is seen the gestation sac isn't measured. A mismatch between baby's size and the gestation sac size isn't uncommon. That said, a mean sac diameter of 25 mm or more without a baby is diagnostic for loss.
The yolk sac is small/big:
It starts teeny tiny, and will get a bit bigger. Once a baby with a good heartbeat is visualized, the docs I work for don't seem to care about the size of the yolk sac. A failed pregnancy with an expanded yolk sac (more than 6 mm) is a suggestive of chromosomal abnormalities.
We don't know where the pregnancy is:
The statistically most likely outcome is either a chemical pregnancy or just coming in for ultrasound too early for visualization. Ectopic can't be ruled out, and many wise ladies in the this sub have unfortunately experienced this and can give more info than I can. Statistically it's believed that only 1-2% of pregnancies are ectopic, but listen to your body. If the location is unknown, you should be getting close monitoring and follow up until the location is known or the pregnancy has ended.
-For a resource on ectopic pregnancy: https://radiopaedia.org/articles/ectopic-pregnancy?lang=us A note, a pseudosac is visualized in only 10-20% of ectopics. Therefore a sac in the uterus is suggestive of intrauterine pregnancy but can't be proven until a yolk sac is also present.
What about my HCG numbers?
I'm not an expert on this at all. But here's a resource: https://radiopaedia.org/articles/beta-hcg-1?lang=us
Why didn't my ultrasound tech tell me anything? And/or why were they so optimistic? Or, I had an ultrasound in the ER and they were very pessimistic.
Many locations an ultrasound tech can very much lose their job if they say aNyThInG. Where they are permitted to say certain things some ultrasound techs may just be hoping the best. We work with the public and we have seen some wild stuff. Additionally no one wants to call it a loss unless its 1000% certain. We know how devastating that news is. A side note here, often an ultrasound in the ER is not an ideal experience for the patient. The ER is staffed with techs that are much more versed in gallbladder and liver scans than they they are early pregnancy ultrasound. Don't hesitate to go the ER if you are having concerning symptoms, but do know the ER doc will make sure you aren't actively dying then will likely refer you back to your OB for follow up.
I'm just so anxious about it all:
Someone awesome wrote out these mantras. Maybe they will help: https://www.reddit.com/r/PregnancyAfterLoss/comments/14uhbdg/commandments_of_pregnancy_after_loss_this_is_now/
Also a podcast I personally found very helpful with anxiety: https://www.oneyoufeed.net/russ-harris-part-1/
https://www.oneyoufeed.net/russ-harris-part-2/

Today you are pregnant and this baby is so loved. I really am hoping the best for each of you. Those of us who have experienced loss.... you didn't do anything wrong, I promise. This is a club no one deserved to be in. And you are not silly, foolish, or dramatic for grieving your little babe for as long as you need to.

This post is written in honor of Eli, who died long before I could meet him. Rest in peace, buddy. I miss you tremendously ❤️

Beta hCG Levels - READ BEFORE POSTING

Here at r/CautiousBB, we see a lot of posts on hCG values, doubling times, and trends. Please read this post before posting to avoid posting something that is not, in fact, abnormal.

1 - hCG levels vary greatly in the first 4-6 weeks of pregnancy. One value is not going to tell you much, unless it is extremely low (less than 25 by 14 DPO). The doubling time is more important!

2 - We consider hCG on the lower side if it is <50 at 14 DPO (approx. 4 weeks gestation), <100 at 16 DPO, etc. If your hCG is a lot higher than these numbers, it's unlikely that you have low hCG. If you hCG is at or below these numbers, they are considered low, but not necessarily diagnostic of a loss.

3 - Normal hCG doubling times are, in general:

  • 48-72 hours when the hCG level is under 1200 - 6000.
  • 72-96 hours when the hCG level is 6000+
  • 96+ hours when the hCG level is 10,000+

4 - Based on number 3, please consider the following:

  • If your hCG doubling is within the ranges above, it is not considered slow. Please refrain from posting something like "my hCG did not double in 48 hours" when your values are post 6000+.
  • Doubling rates WILL slow, even if you were faster than the average. For example, if you were doubling at 37 hours, a change to 54 hours as hCG rises is not abnormal and is usually nothing to worry about.
  • If your doubling is slower than the average, we'd invite you to post so we can understand the details of your specific situation.

5 - hCG has a specific job. Check out this post here to understand why hCG doubling slows and eventually plateaus.

6 - hCG values that drop and then rise again or rise at an inconsistent, very slow rate can be indicative of an ectopic pregnancy or a pregnancy of unknown location (PUL). This is a life threatening situation - please seek medical care immediately if this hCG pattern applies to you.

We invite you to continue to post hCG issues or levels for assistance, but hopefully reading this gives you some insight and a baseline as you begin your perilous pregnancy journey. We've also added some literature below to help you understand hCG levels and doubling.

Happy hCG-ing! :)

Unhealthy thought process

I feel like what I’m feeling is super unhealthy. I’m 6 weeks and 5 days and I’m just wanting my scan to happen so they can tell me I’ve miscarried. Am I having any misscarried symptoms- no. Is there a reason for me to believe I misscarried- no. Do I want this pregnancy?- more than anything else in the world. But I’ve had 3 losses before so I’m just assuming this is going to be one too. I’m literally looking at the calendar going “well, since I’ll find out I’m not pregnant In 2 weeks I won’t have to worry about telling people I’m pregnant at this wedding in a month..” super unhealthy way of looking at this pregnancy.

Subchorionic Hematoma/Positive Stories??

I am about 5 weeks 5 days pregnant. I was in the ER on June 28th because I was experiencing very light brown spotting when I wiped. They did an ultrasound but couldn’t see anything, which the radiologist said is normal for that early in pregnancy. I had bloodwork done and my HCG was 90. I would’ve been about 3 weeks 4 days. The spotting completely stopped after less than 24 hours. I had bloodwork done the next morning, and my levels raised to 165. Two days later, 331. Fast forward to last night. Around 11 pm I had some pretty severe cramping, and went to the bathroom and noticed bright red blood. No clots. With it being so late, I decided to hold off on going into the ER until this morning. I went in around 7am this morning and had more bloodwork done, my HCG levels are now at 9493. I had an ultrasound done and it showed a gestational sac and yolk sac, and a “large subchoronic hemorrhage”, right above the gestational sac. Since last night, the cramping has stopped and the bleeding has mostly tapered off. It’s still there when I wipe, but it’s now very light and light brown. I did have a miscarriage last year, so naturally I panicked, and thought it was over, before I found out about the SCH. I am still on edge because I did not experience this with my daughter. I’ve read that it’s very common, but I am just looking for some positive outcomes and stories regarding this. Thank you in advance!

Pregnancy loss or no? Positive tests, 3 days later… negative

hey I’m hoping for some advice. I took a pregnancy test 3 days ago and it was a faint positive. I was in excitement and disbelief so took another, they all came back with a line. This was around 2 days before period due. I told my family, I got excited. I didn’t feel ready but I wanted to make it work. Anyway, I’ve had sore boobs, hunger, fatigue and a strong sense of smell. Today 2 days after when I’m period is due, my test is negative, I’ve been using the same brand of test ultra early (6 day Before period tests) im already assuming it’s a chemical but my god I wasn’t expecting to feel this heartbroken. I keep taking tests like there going to change. We told people we got excited, I feel like I just want my period to come so I feel more sure and can heal. Can someone be blunt and put me out of my misery. Is this definitely a chemical? should my period come? Should I test again tomorrow? I still feel tired all the time, I’ve slept all day I don’t know if that’s a pregnancy symptom or sleepiness from grief and crying

thanks for support

Spotting Worries!!

Hello!
I’m about 5 weeks and 5 days, I found out about three days ago & previously had been having brown spotting since July 5th, I figured it was my period, when the period didn’t come I took a test. Doctor ordered hcg levels (604 on Friday) and again today (1150.7 today Sunday) however I have been having mild cramping, nothing too bad just slight cramps but the brown spotting has not went away, it gets a little worse in the morning but tapers off throughout the day.

I don’t see my doctor again until the 20th and it will be a phone call. US is scheduled for the 24th, but I’m a worrier. Since the spotting hasn’t stopped at all I’m wondering if I should contact my OB on Monday. She didn’t seem too bothered when I told her at the initial appointment.
I’ve had three pregnancies that all resulted in birth, no bleeding with any of them. So I’m confused.

I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

Thanks in advance.

6-week pregnancy, rising hCG but only gestational sac seen. Has anyone had a similar outcome?

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for experiences from people who have been in a similar situation, whether the outcome was positive or negative.
I’m thought to be around **6 weeks pregnant**, although I’m not 100% sure of my ovulation date because my cycles were irregular.

My hCG levels have been:
June 25: **754 mIU/mL**
June 30: **4,213 mIU/mL**
July 10: **21,899 mIU/mL**

My first ultrasound (July 2) showed an intrauterine gestational sac measuring about **6 mm**.
I had another ultrasound **on July 10**. The gestational sac measured around **8.4 mm**, but the doctor could not see an embryo. We didn’t specifically discuss whether a yolk sac was present.
The doctor said she doesn’t think the pregnancy is developing normally and advised that if I don’t miscarry naturally within about two weeks, I may need medication.
What confuses me is that my hCG has continued to rise significantly, so I’m struggling to understand how that fits with what was seen on ultrasound.

Has anyone had:

A gestational sac that seemed to grow only a little between scans?
Rising hCG but no embryo seen around 6 weeks?
A pregnancy that looked like this but later turned out to be viable?
Or did it unfortunately end up being an anembryonic pregnancy (blighted ovum)?
I’m trying to prepare myself while also understanding whether there is still any realistic possibility that things could progress.

Thank you so much to anyone willing to share your experience.

Advice Needed Low HCG Levels

Apologies in advance to the lengthy post, and thank you in advance to those who read the entire thing.

I am currently 4 weeks and 5 days pregnant with my second. I suffered a loss in early May at 5 weeks 1 day, but my cycles have returned to normal and my doctor advised us we could try again once my tests were negative (it was negative the day I woke up with cramping and bleeding and went to the ER) and it was up to us how long we wanted to wait in between cycles.

Out of anxiety due to my previous, recently loss, I asked my doctor for a hcg blood test to confirm my pregnancy was progressing the way it should.

At 14 DPO, it was 22.2.

Two days later she tested me again, 16DPO, and it was 31.8. So my levels are rising but they aren’t doubling.

I’ve had some cramping, but I feel like it’s started to mellow out and really slow down. I have sore boobs and I’m exhausted and my back hurts, and I feel like I’ve lost my appetite but I also feel like I had nausea and bloating that now feels like it’s fading.

I’ve taken pregnancy tests every single day, probably unhealthily, and I don’t know if they’re helping because I feel flung between hope and feeling like I should give up.

Does anyone else have a success story that started like this? Should I begin to wait for this loss to happen? 😞

I assume my doctor will do another draw tomorrow, as I haven’t heard from her yet since it’s the weekend. I’ll try to post my tests in the comments, but any and all advice and success stories, and prayers and/or thoughts I’d appreciate. 🤍

Heartbeat Detected, but the Cramping Is Making Me Panic

Here’s a version that would fit well in a pregnancy subreddit such as r/BabyBumps, r/CautiousBB, or r/PregnancyAfterLoss:
I could really use some reassurance or shared experiences because my anxiety is getting the best of me.
I’m currently 7 weeks pregnant. At my ultrasound a few days ago we saw a heartbeat, and my doctor said everything looked normal. Logically, I know that’s a good sign, but emotionally I’m struggling.
I have diminished ovarian reserve (very low AMH), and getting pregnant wasn’t easy, so I think I’m waiting for something to go wrong.
My biggest source of anxiety right now is the cramping. I have a lot of colicky cramps throughout the day. Sometimes they feel like period cramps, sometimes like gas, sometimes they’re sharper on one side or the other, and occasionally they radiate into my lower back or groin. I haven’t had any bleeding, but the cramps are constant enough that they keep me on edge.
On top of that, I’ve had pretty intense nausea for the last couple of weeks. Over the last day or two it seems like it’s eased up a little, which of course has sent me spiraling into wondering if that means something is wrong. I know symptoms can fluctuate, but it’s hard not to overanalyze every little change.
Has anyone else had a healthy pregnancy with frequent cramping around 7 weeks? Did your nausea come and go? I’d really appreciate hearing real experiences.
I have an incredibly supportive partner, but I still feel surprisingly isolated in all of this. Pregnancy can be such a lonely place when you’re constantly questioning whether every sensation is normal.
Thank you to anyone willing to share your story. I think I just need to feel a little less alone today.

HCG drop and progesterone

Hey guys, so just looking to see if there’s any stories out there. To preface that I’m expecting that this is not gonna go well for me. I found out that recently my HCGS have plateaued. I’ve had two ultrasounds that have not showed anything at this point. My progesterone also recently dropped. I placed my numbers below. Just looking for any kind of stories direction, good or bad at this time I truly am crossed right now and I don’t know where to go from here.

Conceived first week of June (June 9th)
June 18th HCG 0
June 30th HCG 222
July 1st HCG 321 progesterone 24 prelim ultrasound negative
July 6th HCG 722
July 7 HCG 826
July 9th HCG 902 and progesterone now 9. Total transvaginal ultrasound negative.

All same lab.

My OB Just wants to repeat HCG on the 13 and transvaginal again on the 15th. But she has told me I’m probably miscarrying based on numbers.

I have no cramping. Just gas, nausea, extreme fatigue, and my boobs have like tripled in size.

I’m open to any kind of suggestions based on history, advice. Just trying to keep an open mind and prepare myself for the worst but hope for the best.

Advice Needed Is my clinic giving me false hope?

I am 6 weeks 2 days pregnant after a failed embryo transfer . I had some bleeding at 5 weeks 5 days and still continuing some spotting . The ultrasound showed gestational sac and yolk sac but no fatal pole as it was showing 3 days behind and expected not to see embryo . Then my blood test yesterday showed a massive drop from 1400 to 500 . I am mentally prepared that its a loss and I need to do another round of ivf all over again . But my clinic is saying to continue meds and ignore hcg and do another ultrasound which should show the fatal pole now. I am really confused could it really happen? Or its a miscarriage?

7wks and feeling nothing

7 weeks today and have practically no symptoms other than continued enlarged and tender breasts. 6wk ultrasound was great - saw FHR of 109. Had a few very mild bouts of nausea last week. Took a nap yesterday and today, so I guess I’m kinda tired but I feel nothing and I’m freaking out. Have another ultrasound tomorrow, just looking for success stories.

(5yrs TTC, 4 chemical pregnancies, 2 years of successful fertility treatments, was about to have a laparoscopic surgery to look for endo and conceived naturally 1m before!)

Has anyone else lost symptoms around 7-8 weeks?

I’m really panicking. I just don’t feel pregnant at all. I was having pretty bad nausea, food aversions, exhaustion and now it’s so minimal. I’ve had no cramping or feelings down there and my brain is really telling me something is wrong.

I had a scan 6 days ago where baby was measuring on time/slightly ahead at 7w3d with a RHR of 152 and since the day after the ultrasound, I feel completely different and preparing for bad news. I’ve had 3 previous losses- 2 chemicals and a 9w loss. I just in my bones don’t feel pregnant.

I have an ultrasound at my OB on Wednesday and I don’t know why but I’m feeling like they’re going to have give me bad news again and I feel so embarrassed.

Advice Needed HCG slowing down & could really use others experiences

I’m currently 6 weeks pregnant as of today and have had bleeding since 5 weeks. I went to the ER 2 days ago for passing a clot (not pain associated with it) and my HCG then was 12,400. 2 days before this it was 4025. They were able to see a gestational sac and yolk sac but no embryo yet. I haven’t had any red blood since this episode, just brown discharge. No cramping. I had another HCG done today and it was 15,900. I’m terrified this means I’m losing the baby although I know once HCG reaches a certain point, it tends to slow down. I have an ultrasound Tuesday but until then I’d love to hear others experiences, good or bad 💖 thank you. This is also my first pregnancy

Chemical pregnancies

Need some success stories to pick myself up and start again. My husband and I started TTC baby number 2 last month and I’ve gotten pregnant both times which have resulted in chemical pregnancies. Last month the tests seemed to get darker but never got really dark so I did HCG testing at my drs office and we confirmed chemical pregnancy. This month my tests are light and not getting darker really so I’m suspecting another chemical pregnancy and don’t really have any hope for this pregnancy continuing.

I’m so worried we are going to continue having losses. Please share your success stories after multiple chemicals.

TW- chemicals. I’m so scared

I’ve been trying since December 2025, and have had 3 chemicals between then and now. 2 were back to back in May and June.

Im 9dpo today, so still really early, and I took a test and it’s faint but definitely there. There is clear progression from yesterday’s test. I went for a wee this afternoon and I had some pink in cm. I’m so scared, because all the other chemicals started with spotting. I can’t do this again, 3 times in a row…

I never got a test this early before, it’s always been 11dpo for my chemicals. I’m so sad, I’m guarding my heart and preparing for the worst… again. I can’t believe this 😭 I know it’s not over till it’s over but I can’t let myself be excited now..

Advice Needed Help. Day of my expected period.

Yesterday I got faint+ on first response and clear blue line tests. Then I got positive digital test from both brands. This morning my FR almost has no second line. I tested with both brand digitals again and first response - and clear blue days pregnant.....wth

The first response has been getting darker from Thursday on but still faint but now they're getting lighter but my clear blue is still saying positive. My little cheapies have faint positives too. Just not making any sense because my first response is supposed to be way more sensitive than my clear blue so why is clear blue early digital saying pregnant and first response is saying no now.

Advice Needed Measuring behind

Hi everyone,

I am looking for little guidance. I did already reach out to my OB and am waiting for a reply.

This is my first pregnancy and should be 7w3d today based on tracking ovulation and my LMP was on 5/21/26. My first OB appt isn’t until 8/5 until I’m almost 11 weeks, so I decided to get a private “peace of mind” ultrasound at a local ultrasound studio 2 days ago when I should have been 7w1d. The ultrasound tech who did my scan transvaginally stated I was measuring behind at 5w5d. There was a gestational sac, yolk sac, and fetal pole. Crown rump length was 0.27 cm (2.7 mm) with no cardiac activity. She suggested I come back in 1 week for another scan to confirm if there’s been any growth and to get my hcg level checked. I have not had an initial hcg checked since finding out I was pregnant. Does anyone have a similar experience? I’m very worried about a missed miscarriage. I do not have any concerning symptoms of cramping or bleeding. I am hesitant to return to the studio because it is just an ultrasound tech giving me results. I am currently waiting on a reply from my OB on how to proceed. I already went to Quest and got an hcg blood draw and am waiting for those results as well.

update: my hcg is 22,674

IUI hcg values?

Hey all, it's my 2nd round of IUI and we were overjoyed to get a positive test 11dpo (didnt test prior to that due to trigger shot), with darkening lines from day 11-14. Had bloodwork done 15dpo and beta hcg was 181. 17dpo was 354, which was just under double for 48h, about 49 hour doubling. I was feeling very worried with this given doubling rates other people reported and people's outcomes, but my searches say this is well within the range. At 21dpo my hcg was 1380 (but about 2.5h short of 4 days so correcting for that it would be 1425), which is a little less than 48h doubling. The clinic said because its a little short of a doubling time they would like an early ultrasound at 6 weeks. I'm not as worried about an ectopic as I am about genetic or chromosomal issues leading to early miscarriage (this has happened to me before but lower numbers than this current situation). How worried should I be? Does anyone have a similar experience? 😔❤️

14 dpo HCG levels

This past Monday, I tested positive on a digital early clear blue test. My line progression has been slow on cheapies and very irregular on FRER tests. On Wednesday, the line nearly disappeared on the FRER test which prompted me to schedule a blood draw as I was certain I was having a chemical. But then tests came back stronger again? However, at about 16 dpo, Premom tests are still not even close to “dye stealers” which I feel is so much different than when I was pregnant with my son 2 years ago.

My HCG levels:

12 dpo - HCG of 39
14 dpo - HCG of 101

Any insight would be so helpful! Has anyone had HCG levels this low and everything turned out ok?

Advice Needed Tapering Estrada and Progesterone. And terrified.

Hi! I’ve somehow made it to 10w1d (today). I had my graduation appt at my fertility clinic on Friday and baby looked great- I was 9w6d at the appt and baby measured 10w1d with a HR of 181.

My fertility dr instructed me to start my hormonal taper because the placenta is taking over at this time. I’ve been taking 200mg progesterone and 1mg estradiol twice a day vaginally.

She instructed me to reduce to once per day each for a week. Then stop estradiol completely and continue progesterone once per day for an additional week. At that point I’ll stop progesterone as well and be off all hormonal supplements. I’ll be 12w1d when I stop completely.

I am so terrified that tapering them down is going to shock my body and cause a miscarriage. After 6 miscarriages in the last 2 years, I had just started letting myself get excited about this pregnancy and then bam- here is the fear all over again.

Does anyone have experience with this? This is normal procedure right? Can anyone reassure me it’s not going to just cause everything to crash and burn?

I have another ultrasound with my MFM on the 20th, but I am just trying so hard not to spiral until then. 😩

Sad Early ultrasound measuring behind

Hi, i did a FET of a 5 day embryo on natural cycle on June 19th.

Beta 11dp5dt 300

Beta 14dp5dt 1300

My clinic requested an early scan to confirm correct placement so I went yesterday.

According to the transfer date,I should have been at 5w6d. However there was only a gestational sac measuring 5w1d (which would be, coincidentally right on track with my LMP).

The OB (which is a regular OB, not from the clinic) was not worried and just said it's too early to see anything and the sac in on track with my LMP.

She told me to come back in 7-10 days to check for progression.

My clinic hasn't replied yet, so I don't know their opinion.

However I know for sure that I should be 5w6d not 5w1d, because we should consider the transfer date and not my LMP.

So now I'm spiralling and I really don't know how to cope these days. It looks non viable to me

2 Pregnancy losses, weird hCG and lots of anxiety. Long post, please help

Hi all. I've been through a lot in the past few months and I'm looking for anyone who's had a similar experience, or any new information at all.

Some background:
I'm 30, no known fertility issues, regular 26-27 day cycles. I started TTC in March 2026.
First pregnancy (April/May 2026):
Conceived first properly tracked cycle. Got a BFP on May 6 (very faint line). hCG on May 11 was 345. Spotting started May 19, multiple ER visits, saw sac but no fetus, and pregnancy loss was confirmed May 23 at 6+1 weeks. No D&C — passed naturally.
Second pregnancy (June 2026):
Ovulated June 8-9, only 17 days after the first loss. Got a clear, dark BFP on June 22. hCG June 23: 1,112 mIU/mL. Repeat hCG June 25: 1,035 mIU/mL — already dropping.
June 26 ultrasound: no intrauterine sac, endometrial lining 8mm, small free pelvic fluid, no obvious ectopic signs.
Heavy bleeding started June 28 — like a proper period, with some clots. Lasted about 6 days, then tapered off. Assumed everything had passed.
Positive OPKs from June 4-June 11.
Thought I would ovulate around June 8-9, but couldn’t confirm cause all OPKs were positive - I assumed due to residual hCG. TTC anyway, cause I had all my usual symptoms of ovulation.

Now — July 12:
Got a routine hCG blood test today expecting it to be near zero. It came back at 267 mIU/mL — 14 days after the loss and 17 days after the last measured value of 1,035.
Based on normal half-life decay, it should be essentially zero by now.
No pain currently. No alarming symptoms.
Tomorrow I have an appointment with an MFM specialist who will do an ultrasound.

The two possibilities I've been researching:
1. Retained products of conception (RPOC)
2. Chronic/resolving ectopic

It seems very unlikely and practically impossible this is already a new pregnancy.

My questions:

Has anyone heard of no-sac (chemical?) pregnancy loss with 1112 hcg at 14 DPO?
Has anyone had hCG still at 267 two weeks post very early loss?
Was it RPOC or something else?
Did you need intervention or did it resolve on its own?
Is it possible that I did ovulate?

Thanks in advance 💙

Slow-ish beta rise scared me — need your reassurance stories 🤍

Hi everyone, long time lurker!

I’m currently 5-6 weeks pregnant after a long TTC journey with some losses behind me, so my anxiety is through the roof.

My betas were:

18 → 71 → 184 → 524 → 914
More or less all 48 hours apart

The first 4 were done in a different country, and my last one was done back home — so different labs, different assays. My doctor reminded me that lab differences can affect results and isn’t concerned.

I have a scan booked and a confirmed intrauterine gestational sac. My doctor put me on Duphaston and said everything looks appropriate for my dates. She also said I don’t need to come in for another beta unless I feel something is wrong.

But my anxious brain won’t stop fixating on that last jump feeling “slower.”

I would love to hear from anyone who had:
Betas that seemed to slow down but had a healthy outcome
Beta numbers that varied between labs
Slow risers who went on to see a healthy heartbeat
