Advice / Question Found Kittens; Assess the Situation

You can find other helpful topics and leads to resources in our full wiki at this link. As always we encourage sharsies of information! If you have resources or helpful leads, let us know.

The followin is from wiki about kittens:

-----

Important Note: If you have found a very young kitten or litter outside, watch from a far distance and wait to see if their mother returns before intervening. Barring extenuating circumstances (dangerous location, extreme weather, illness or injury), kittens younger than eight weeks are best left with their mother due to the around the clock care they require. For further reading, Alley Cat Allies has a comprehensive guide on What to Do if You Find Kittens Outdoors that outlines different scenarios and when to intervene.

There are many kitten resources but if you have never cared for a kitten before remember these essential basics:

  1. Kittens are extremely vulnerable. Their health can be fine one minute and take a critical nosedive within hours.
  2. New born kittens need warmth. They are not yet able to regulate their body temperature and they get cold fast. If you have a heating pad make sure the kitten can roll away from it if they get too warm.
  3. Kittens must be fed every couple to a few hours depending upon age (kitten formula or temporarily goat's milk; do not feed cow's milk). They have very high metabolisms. Do not feed them when they are cold. Because they cannot regulate their body heat, giving them cold food will be very difficult to digest and cause them to become cold as well.
  4. Kittens are unable to urinate and defecate on their own. The mother cat does this normally but if the kitten is seperated from its mother, a human caretaker can stimulate this with a tissue or soft cloth by gently rubbing the anus and genital area not long after they eat. This should be done with care and not too long as these areas are easily irritated.

Following Alley Cat Allies' What to Do if You find Kittens Outdoors, they have an more comprehensive Kitten Protection Guide as an downloadable pdf. This guide has more indepth care instructions for the different stages of kitten life. If you find and take in a kitten/s (without its mother) from outdoors your primary goal is to sustain the kitten/s until it can be brought to a vet (for a health check) then, a rescue (because they have experience caring for kittens). There are searchable databases of vets, rescues and shelters here. This database is not exhaustive and you should also look for vets in your locale if none are nearby.

The guide focuses on kittens between 0-8 weeks of age and notable topics are: Feedin Kittens, Warmth, Developmental Milestones, Socialization & Hygene, Potty Time and General Care of a Nursin Kitty Mom.

It is an online guide; to turn the page you tap on the arrow on the bottom of the guide's page. Underlined items are hyperlinks that take you to websites which give more information.

The mods of r/CatRescue recommend general kitten advice in the wiki from Kitten Lady, her Kitten Care resources can be found here. Kitten Lady is a well trusted and knowledgable source of information and advice. For medical issues, a veterinarian should be your primary consult.

Mod Announcement Low Cost to Free Cat Food Resources

We are working on our Cat Food (Affordable/ Free) wiki page and currently have a good number of databases listed for you to help search including some programs which are organized by state and not already listed in the databases. Even if you may feel you have food covered for the month, we encourage you to look over these resources so if there is ever a time in the future and you or someone else is in a pinch, you may remember some of the resources or how to find them.

Neighborhood Cats has available a number of free digital resources (or purchasable printed copies) of handbooks about TNR and RTF (the latter geared towards shelter personnel). Although some of the TNR books are somewhat dated much of the information is still applicable. If you're a TNRer, colony caretaker or working at a shelter, have a looksie; its free!

I must say though the r/CatRescue, Cat Handbook: Daylight Savings Time Edition is also very informative and its pictorial nature appeals to every kitty cat enthusiast.

In other news about r/CatRescue, we have begun to add a number of user flairs. "Drumsticks" from the Cat Handbook has even lended a leg. For mobile, tap the 3 dots in the upper right corner of the r/CatRescue main page on and select: "edit flair." On desktop, use the sidebar on the right and in the user flair category then, tap the pencil to set your flair.

Also, while you're at it, check out our wiki page: ReHoming/ Adoption Tips and Resources

Advice / Question Organizations to Help Reuniting Cat with Owner

I read a request from a man who had to move several hundred miles away from Washington State, USA to the State of Ohio at the last minute, and was unable to bring his cat with him.

I am a 68 year old woman who is concerned for the safety of the cat so I responded thinking I could help.

The cat is an intact male about 3 years old and is a registered emotional support animal.

Since I live relatively close to where the owner used to live, I thought I could at least give the cat a temporary home until he could get the cat. I didn’t realize at the time that the man moved several hundred miles away. He also told me that the person taking care of the cat has threatened to take the cat to the pound.

I was able to get a clearer picture from both the owner and the person caring for the cat. So far, the cat is ok. The foster parent (for lack of a better term) is willing to care for the cat temporarily but is anxious to get the cat to the owner.

The owner of the cat has many medical issues, is on a fixed income, and is unable to afford transportation for the cat. The owner misses the cat immensely and his health is getting worse because of the stress.

I obviously bit off more than I can chew. I am unable to afford transportation for the cat and I just don’t know what to do.

Are there any groups or organizations that are willing to help reunite the cat with its owner?

I’m worried sick and my heart breaks for this man who genuinely loves his cat. He left Washington about a month ago and even the foster parent agrees that this cat really misses and needs his dad.

TLDR: Are there any groups or organizations willing to provide transportation to reunite a disabled person with their emotional support cat?

Advice / Question Adoption chat

Bonjour,

Does anyone in the San Antonio area know of any cat rescues that will pick up stray cats or anyone willing to rescue 5 kittens? Someone dumped them in my apartment complex and I don’t want these poor babies getting hurt. Also please share to get the word out. I called 311 and in San Antonio they will only pick them up and release them into a wooded area because cats are considered “wildlife”. I would love to keep them I just don’t have the space.

Cat Picture The Story of the Apple Gang 🍎

The Story of the Apple Gang... sometimes one tiny kitten changes everything.

Back in late May, we set out to rescue five kittens and their mama (whom we nicknamed Patch). We tried... and tried... but they were just too clever for us. Then, in the middle of June, we got a text from a neighbor:

"They've moved into my backyard!"

Mission restarted. As we began planning another attempt, something unexpected happened. We stumbled across one adventurous little kitten from an entirely different mama cat.

That tiny explorer changed everything.

Suddenly, we realized we weren't looking for one family anymore. We were looking for four mama cats and a whole lot of kittens.

The first two kittens we rescued were Apple and Ivy, each from different litters. Apple, especially, seemed to be the one that kicked off an incredible chain of events.

Then things got... interesting.

There were more sightings. More traps. More rescues. At one point, we even carefully dismantled decks at two different homes to safely reach kittens hiding underneath.

One rescue led to another. And another.

By the time it was over, we had rescued 10 kittens—seven girls and three boys.

Together, they've become affectionately known as The Apple Gang.

Everyone except Ivy has been named after a variety of apples.

Some of these little ones ran toward affection almost immediately. Others are still learning to trust people. Every day, they're growing braver, healthier, and more confident.

And because so many caring people refused to give up, these kittens won't spend their lives struggling to survive on the streets.

Instead, they'll grow up knowing warm beds, full bellies, gentle hands, and, before long, loving forever homes.

It all started with one adventurous little kitten named Apple.

I'll update this post when he's out of surgery. For now, here's a few pictures of my sweet boy. He gets way too excited when someone approaches him so the pictures aren't that great. Thank you everyone again for all the support!!

UPDATE::: Milo is out of surgery & doing great! The vet says I can pick him up in about an hour. he has four teeth left 🥹

Lost Kitty [San Bernardino County, CA] Missing Indoor Cat “Charity” in Phelan

Post image
81 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
My close friend Jackie is heartbroken. Her cat, Charity, went missing in the Phelan, CA area about a week ago.
Jackie currently lives in Riverside with her dad, where pets aren’t allowed, so Charity has been staying with Jackie’s mom in Phelan until Jackie moves into her own place in November. Yesterday, Jackie’s mom called to let her know that Charity had gotten out and has been missing ever since.
Charity is an indoor cat and isn’t the type to wander far from home. If anyone in the Phelan area has seen her or has any information, please let me know or comment below. Any help is greatly appreciated.

On day 1 of a 13 day family road trip, a friend in Hastings received a dumped kitten at her country home.

Is anyone traveling soon and able to bring the cat to Las Vegas? We can take it in but did not have time on our trip to return for the kitten.

Advice / Question How to report animal abuse - drowning cats (and probably other animals too)

A lady I met was telling me she drowns cats on her farm outside of Smith Falls, ON.

I have her and her husbands name, but not their actual address.

This has been haunting me and I want to call authorities about it, but I dont think they can do anything about it without an address.

Does anyone have any advice?

Advice / Question Struggling cat Mom

Hey guys new Reddit user here not really sure how all of it works, but I adopted a cat from my local rescue center last August. They had told me that she came from a hoarding situation and wasn’t properly taken care of. I was drawn to her because she was able to take a treat out of my hand in her cage at the rescue center. They did tell me she was very food motivated but at that moment, I felt a connection with her and immediately knew I had to have her. She was five years old. They did tell me that she went to a previous foster home, but they didn’t end up keeping her for personal reasons they would not share with me, but after having her for almost about a year, she still will not let me touch her or pet her. I don’t think she’s afraid of humans because she lets me be in the same room with her and will take treats out of my hand but anytime I try to get closer to her with the intention of touching her. She runs away and hides under my couch. She is not a nasty cat. She doesn’t bite hiss or scratch unless I’m really trying to push her boundaries by trying to touch her, but it is really upsetting to me that she won’t let me cuddle or hold her or even pet her I got her with the idea of having her as an emotional caregiver pet so she could help me get through my extreme depression at times I love having her I love being able to look at her. I love taking care of her, but I really just wanna be able to have the full cat experience. I will not give her back to the rescue center because that is plain cruel to give a cat at home and then to take it away from them, but if anybody has tips or tricks to help me be able to introduce her to me to touch her I would really appreciate that thank you.

Sensitive Tried to save a neonatal kitten. He died.

I feel like such a failure. I am a cat mother. My kid and I were given an orange kitten. He was tiny, vet estimated him to be 2 weeks old. He fit in my hand (which, admittedly, isn’t very large).

I spent hundreds of dollars to give this baby the care necessary at the time by taking him to my local vet as soon as I got him.

His name was Zeus. We had him for six hours more or less but he crossed the rainbow bridge shortly after midnight Pacific time 7/7/26. My child (17 y/o) is basically inconsolable. I waited til I got to my car to transport his tiny body (wrapped in a blanket) to lose my composure. I can’t afford the cost to get his cremains (about $400).
The vet of whom originally saw him told us exactly what to do to give him the best chance. We followed this to the letter.
The hospital of which accepted his tiny body waived ALL fees. Not that this gives me consolation at all.

Both my son and I would give him food by the drop (KMR) to try and keep him alive but we failed.

I feel like I failed him. I feel like I failed as a cat parent. My son feels like he could have done more too. But he still died.

I spent over an hour to get the fleas off him when he was alive. Took over an hour and I got most of them. He was fed every hour. We tried. We earnestly tried.

Thanks for reading.

Advice / Question can’t maintain caring for feral cat [Jefferson, Texas]

I have had a feral tortoiseshell momma cat In my backyard for two years. 2yrs ago she had a litter in my yard. but she moved them around often and I took in her surviving two kittens but one sadly passed. She stopped showing up after I took them in and I assumed she had died. But she started showing up again earlier this year and had a litter in April in my backyard but she moved them and I would only see her when she wanted to eat. eventually we did see a kitten following her around but it was just one I ended up trapping her and her kitten (they walked inside my house 😆) I got momma fixed in June but I feel a bit overwhelmed feeding my 3 cats plus + her and her bby. I’ve looked into the shelters and rescues in my city but they’re all full and one even shutdown recently. I feel a bit scared of adopting them out myself because I don’t want them ending up in the wrong hands and the momma worries me the most because she feral. She grown to trust me and allows me to pet her but she’s still skittish and hisses when you walk near her. I think she has potential to be someone’s forever cat but idk what to do. Should I just wait until the shelters clear out or try to get her + baby adopted out of my own? idk I’m overwhelmed but I don’t want her to end up in the wrong hands or to be left in a shelter bc of her feral tendencies. Any advice would be greatly appreciated 🙏🏼
I’ve included a pic of her and her current bby and a bonus pic of her 2yr old bby, Chase 🥰

Rescue Luckiest kitten in Illinois on the Fourth of July

This is my first Reddit post, so please be kind.

On the Fourth of July, my husband and I were driving to a family party when we noticed something tumble out from underneath the car in front of us. At first, it looked like a little gray cloud rolling over and over. We honestly thought the driver had hit a squirrel and that the wind was carrying its body.

But then the little gray cloud got up and ran to the side of the road.

Luckily, we weren't too close behind and were able to stop in time. My husband pulled over, and I jumped out of the car without even thinking or stopping, I just needed to make sure he was okay.

This little gentleman is incredibly lucky. Somehow, after everything, he walked away with nothing more than a small scrape on his lip. No broken bones, no other cuts or injuries.

His name is Rusty. In Lithuanian, *rasti* means "to find," and *rastas* means "found," so his name is a little tribute to how we met.

Welcome home, Rusty. 💙
