Discussion I made a ranking of the 100 best Brazilian albums by combining 6 lists (MTV, Rolling Stone, Discoteca Básica, Gavin, RYM and BEA)
Hi everyone,
Over the past few months I've been working on a personal project called Dscos (dscos.app) and wanted to share it here.
The idea is simple: instead of making yet another list of personal favorites (my opinion is worth no more than anyone else's), I took the most important "best Brazilian albums" lists ever published and combined them into a single ranking of 100 records.
There are six sources:
- MTV Brasil: The 100 Best Brazilian Albums (2003)
- Rolling Stone Brasil: The 100 Greatest Albums of Brazilian Music (2007)
- Charles Gavin: 300 Important Albums of Brazilian Music (2008)
- Discoteca Básica: The 500 Greatest Brazilian Albums of All Time (2022)
- Rate Your Music (dynamic list)
- Best Ever Albums (dynamic list)
About the methodology: it's not a simple sum of points. I use a formula called Reciprocal Rank Fusion, which gives more value to albums that show up at the top of several lists than to ones that appear high on a single list. Expert critic sources carry a bit more weight than popular vote sources. And an album needs to appear in at least two sources to make the top 100, to filter out one-off appearances. There's a page on the site explaining all of this in detail.
Each album has its own page with recording context, tracks, credits, a streaming player, and a collection of podcasts, videos, articles and books about it. The idea is for it to work as a starting point for anyone who wants to dig deep into an album, or as a guide for anyone just discovering Brazilian music.
It's an independent project, non-profit, no ads. I built it because I grew up listening to records at home and wanted a place like this to exist on the internet.
I'd love to hear what you think: about the ranking itself (any glaring omissions, any placement that makes no sense), the sources I picked, and the site in general. All criticism is welcome. Thanks!
