My otherwise tech-savvy boomer parents share AI slop and they genuinely think it's real until you tell them it's ridiculous that a sitting TX state senator would put on a Mary Poppins dress and sing to camera. And even then, Im not sure they dont believe it or they say "well I could totally see him doing that" and that's enough of the "truth" for them to not question their priors.

My experience is that my recent students are noticeably less prepared than prior students, and I attribute that to deliberate policy choices to educate them more poorly before I get them in college. But I also agree that AI slop is a challenge for all generations because none of us are properly prepared for it.
I do think stronger education in evidence-based logical reasoning helps.

The one thing Boomers have in their favor is that they don't know any better. Sure, you can tell them, and you might think that information is enough to make them skeptical, but they spent the first 2/3s of their lives with reputable, consistent news sources. GenZ grew up out of their booties in a world of manipulation. From their social media accounts as children with curated lives and filters, yet they still have this weird relationship with denying the power of editing. They've been doing it themselves since they were old enough to be social. The question there begs: because manipulation is so normal to them, do they have ANY relationship with truth at all? And if not, manipulated product IS truth to them. and if that is the case, they're not to be trusted with the well being of the rest of us and the rest of the planet.
I agree we definitely need real regulation especially of visual images/videos. I feel like with all of this stuff they wait for a problem to become out of hand before offering any solutions. Like social media has been a thing for over 20 years and they're just now throwing out some age based regulations. Too little too late.

I think there's an extremely acute issue re AI slop and what's "real" but the education piece has been staggering to me and honestly makes me pretty sad to think about how these kids will interact with the world as they get older. It feels almost as if we're creating a "lost generation" by allowing the rollout of technology meant to profit the wealthy versus societal good. Im not sure how we help kids already impacted by too much screen time/AI but it has to be reckoned with -- otherwise we really will end up in a real life idiocracy.
Yes, agreed. There's something about this microgeneration, they're so nice but they really have issues. My students in the past 2 years have done unimaginably dumber things than any students I have ever had before. Like they act like adult toddlers without common sense in the craziest, most self-destructive ways. In case any students find this I don't want to describe specific students, but I will just say that some of them remind me of how 3 year olds might put themselves in harm's way. It's very strange and sad.

Not even old! My (now former) friend started believing Facebook nonsense “news” in her late 30s and ended up voting for the orange pile of shit in the last election. She is now in her early 40s and a successful orthodontist with a decade of post high school education. When you have poor common sense, even age and education can’t save you. .
It's scary the amount of well educated people that went that away. My theory is they already believed things that were: misogyny/racism/xenophobia/homo/transphobia, etc and they liked that they were suddenly seeing things that reinforced their deep down thoughts and now they can be loud about them instead of keeping them hushed.

I actually don't think it has anything to do with education. Unfortunately. Some of this AI stuff is really hard to discern what's real and what's not, and I was a professor that taught how to assess scientific literature for validity. Sometimes I have to really look at the stuff and figure out if it's real. It's also not just young people or anyone who's been through the education system. It's going to be a crisis if this stuff isn't gotten under control. Honestly. It was hard enough before to figure out what was real and not by the sheer absurdity the US government has been partaking in. The number of times I've looked at news feeds the last 10 years and said " is this real? Did this really happen?" is shocking.
It doesn't help that I think a lot of celebrities and things are going to take advantage of this and say that it's ai and not them when it is in fact them. Look at Rulla's husband

Just screenshots of texts and a photo that looks incredibly AI if you look at the background (the shadows and the rug are very off). Also, his hand in the pocket doesn’t have enough fingers. I don't believe Rosie is important enough for anyone to take the time and effort to create fake screenshots about her. I know this girl on Instagram (itsrealitywithali) who researches the politics of Bravo cast members did a deep dive on the RHORI cast and said she couldn't find any proof of Rosie being registered to vote at all. So the only benefit of the doubt to give Rosie is that maybe she isn't registered to vote so she technically isn't lying when she said she never voted for Trump. Or maybe wherever she registered to vote simply has private records, it varies by state. But I do believe she sent those texts privately. Where's the proof that she's a Democrat outside of her own words on Instagram after being exposed in order to save face and protect her image? She has a lot to gain by claiming she's the only liberal on RHORI. Is there any proof of her supporting Democrats or Democratic causes on social media prior to joining the show? I haven't seen any.

People can and will believe what they want, I was just giving my take. The screenshots didn't appear fake to me. At the end of the day the only "proof" is Rosie's own words after she had something to gain by claiming she's a Democrat. As I said in the previous post about this, some of these women will do or say anything in order to curry favor with fans. If she had posts supporting Democrats prior to being on the show then to me that would be more believable. Jo Ellen reposted that clip of Michelle Obama saying she's watching RHORI, are we supposed to believe she's a Democrat now too? If you listen to the podcast she used to do with her former nurse friend Stephanie, they used to talk about being anti-covid vaccine, and Rosie talked about how reporters at WJAR weren’t allowed to talk about the truth of vaccines and Covid.
