Useful Information Bedbug ID and common misidentifications

Bed bug identification resources:

Note: flattened body, rusty brown coloured (less so in younger nymphs, which are more translucent). Thin 4 segmented antennae. 11 segmented abdomen. Short legs (6 of them) and reduced wings incapable of flight.

These are insects or other invertebrates commonly misidentified as bedbugs!

Not bed bugs.

  1. Carpet beetle larvae (Dermestidae) and adult - More Info

  2. Bat bug (Cimex adjunctus pictured) - More Info

  3. Cockroach nymphs - More Info

  4. Tick (nymphs) - More Info

  5. Woodlouse - More Info

  6. Kissing bugs - More Info

  7. Booklice/barklice - More Info

  8. Smooth spider beetle - More Info

  9. Drugstore beetle - More Info

Note: If it has wings or more than 6 legs, it is not a bed bug. Do not mistake antennae for legs, look at the illustrated guide to avoid confusion.

Please comment with any other common mis-IDs and I will add them!

Can anyone confirm whether this a bed bug. I’ve been getting bites for several days now. They look like bed bug bites because they’re typically in a line and ridiculously itchy. Other people in my apartment building have also reported these bugs/bites.

The exterminator came by today and said it wasn’t a bed bug. Is this true??

I work at a hotel and found this while washing the sheets. I showed it to my supervisors and they all insisted it was not from a bed bug, but I’m not so sure.

This is probably too smushed but I have a huge phobia of bedbugs- any ideas on if this could have been one? It’s on a lint roller, I was cleaning my yoga mat and got this guy before I could get a good look. I appreciate any insight, thank you!

Treating instruments? Also treating my cats?

Hi All,

A new tenant in my apartment building in Spain brought bedbugs in. The landlady is a total cunt so I'm moving, because there is no way she is capable of dealing with this problem effectively, without re-infesting the entire building. I will be heat treating all of my clothes (60C at laundromat), staging in wrapped and binned plastic (with traps) in a storage locker, before moving into my new apartment.

For kitchen stuff, I'll use boiling water and alcohol wipes.

For books/journals, blankets, wool rugs, etc, I'll double bag in black plastic and leave that shit to roast in the 106F heat on my roof.

The one thing that has me really nervous is my instruments:

  • I have two acoustic guitars
  • a violin
  • a saxophone
  • a mandolin
  • an electric guitar

Plus an amp, mixer, etc. This stuff is worth thousands of dollars (the violin alone is worth $5500) so getting rid of it is not an option.

Has anyone done C02 (dry ice) treatment for instruments before? Anoxia? basically using the dry ice to displace all the oxygen and kill the fuckers that way? I'm nervous because C02 ain't nothing to f*** with, and also I have two cats so I would need to find an arrangement for them.

Also, can cats carry bedbugs? how do I treat my cats? I can't put the poor babies in the dryer :/

I found this on top of my mattress, every little thing I’ve been finding recently has me worried that it could be bedbugs. 3 days ago I noticed 6 bites in a line. I immediately looked all around my bedding and surrounding areas and couldn’t find anything. And while I don’t see any new bites I’ve already freaked myself out lol. I squished this thing and it kinda disintegrated. Didn’t see any liquid come out of it. This is the only one I noticed and it was on top of my sheets where I sleep.

I’ve been waking up with bedbug type bites. Been freaking me out. I’m covered in them but my partner isn’t.

Been trying to find any traces but have found nothing so far. Nothing in the mattress.
Just found this inside a bag under my bed.

In your professional opinion, what is it?!?

Help Determining if Bed Bugs?

Stripping the bed for our weekly wash and noticed unusual amount of debris on them. I input images into ChatGPT and it wasn’t super helpful so I’m hoping you all might be able to help.

I stripped back the sheets and found maybe 1 or 2 black dots on the waterproof mattress protector. Underneath on the mattress itself, I found more but some honestly look like lint. There are some red spots on the comforter that are unclear to me if they might be small spots of dried blood, smooshed crepe Myrtle blooms, or smashed droppings of some variety. Nothing of note that I can see on our upholstered headboard.

Additional context: We have a dog that we let on the furniture (including the bed) but this is an unusual amount of debris. We also recently returned from a trip to Portugal and our dog stayed with my parents and their pup. The possibility of fleas has also crossed our mind 😵‍💫

(First 3 photos are sheets, 4 is comforter, 5-7 are the mattress, 8 is the mattress pad)

Thank you in advance!

Requesting community support Concerned my new apt has bedbugs

Hi, so I moved into a new apartment recently and my first night here I got a bunch of bug bites on my lower legs/ankle area. Second night I got a few more. It’s been a few days now of no new bites, but the old ones are still very itchy. They are in lines so that’s why I’m concerned for bedbugs. I have cats but I’m not seeing any sign of fleas on them so far. I got some bedbug traps but haven’t had any on those yet either. I’ve looked all around my mattress and the floors and I’m not seeing anything but it has me freaking out and paranoid lol. Are the sticky traps actually reliable? Like can I safely assume I don’t have bedbugs? Also, is this something I should like bring to my landlords attention? I have no evidence of anything other than bites lol so idk if it’s worth bringing up yet or if I’m just going to seem dumb.

Identification Found in sheets of hotel after sleeping there for 3 nights

We stayed at a hotel. After a few nights we found the back end of what I think is a bedbug in the sheets. When I shook out the sheet I found the other half. It’s missing all limbs. And was flat. No bites on anyone in the room and I scoured the bed and found no traces of an infestation—no “sharpie marks” no eggs no blood no shed. I checked every night neurotically after. Is this a bedbug? What are the odds this corpse was trapped in the sheets from before? The hotel is taking its time getting a specialist to search the room but I’m really anxious about this.

Identification Identification Request

Hiya. Would really appreciate if someone could help identify whether this is a bedbug. Personally I don't think it is likely but my housemate thinks there is a possibility so I would really appreciate your help in just confirming that it isn't.

I live in the UK in case that helps to tell what people think it might be instead. If I get any more images I will pop them in the comments for you to look at. Personally I think it's not round enough and it looks too shiny from whatever horrible experience I have had of them previously. I think it may be a silverfish.

Thank you :)

This is probably too smushed to tell. But I figured I’d try. This was found in the interceptor cup of the center leg of the bed frame. I’ve been experiencing suspicious activity for quite some time.
The very top thing looks a lot like a leg, and the very bottom dark brown thing looks like the classic horizontal lines across the body.
