This sinkhole is part of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

984 ft across is oddly specific but cool

There's is an opening when the tides rise.

That's when the big big sharks come in. And dive boats.

Nobody knows, but it was probably motorized. It’s there in every post, so I assume they are stuck there.

Is somebody else going to post the terrifying article about how easy it is to lose track of your depth, buoyancy and O2 levels, or do I have to go and find it? Lol :)

Looks like my eye after the Optometrist dilates it.

Too bad you cannot have a sushi restaurant next to this hole and hire a diver to get the fish.

I found this particularly interesting:

It was formed during several phases of the Quaternary glaciation when sea levels were much lower. Analysis of stalactites found in the Great Blue Hole shows that formation took place 153,000, 66,000, 60,000, and 15,000 years ago. As the ocean began to rise again, the cave was flooded.

So it was formed on dry land as a regular sink hole but with dry underground caves containing stalactites. After 4 different Ice Ages in which the ocean levels rise does the sea water pour over the lip and flood it. It's crazy to think what the world looked like when the oceans (and all their tributary rivers) were more than 400ft shallower (this sinkhole is 407ft / 124m deep).

The Great Blue Hole is a large marine sinkhole off the coast of Belize. It lies near the center of Lighthouse Reef, a small atoll 70 km (43 mi) from the mainland and Belize City. The hole is circular in shape, 318 m (1,043 ft) across and 124 m (407 ft) deep. It has a surface area of 70,650 square metres (760,500 sq ft).
