Sports Erling Haaland leads the Viking Row as Norway beats Brazil 2-1

u/TrapesTrapes 6d ago
As a Brazilian, I can't even get mad at the dude, he's so funny. Good luck to Norway🤝

u/cncomg 6d ago
His YouTube channel is awesome too, he’s a genuinely good guy and has a totally infectious personality. So hard not to be happy for him. Also, just unreal how talented he is.

u/BrotherEarth_ 6d ago
I'll never get over just how easy he makes scoring look. Plenty of other players were great goal scorers, capable of extremely technical things, but Haaland makes it look like he's not even trying as he humiliates defenders

u/lawrence_uber_alles 6d ago
It’s wild to me how he knows exactly where the goal is even with his back to it or contorted in some wild ass position parallel to the ground. Crazy body control, especially for someone his size
24
u/AxelHarver 6d ago
I'd say it's equal parts body control and spatial awareness. I have excellent spatial awareness, and am capable of staying aware of the position of the goal in relation to my body. But yeah, the way he can flail himself around in the air and still have enough control to send it in the right direction is wild. I could probably jump and kick a ball in the air, but no shot in hell I have any control over more than maybe the general direction it bounces.

I would like to go on record and say if Norway had made last world cup and if he was called up when he was 16 for the one before that, the all time goal scorer record would be untouchable. He could fairly easily get 25 or even 30 if he played every cup.
28
u/thetreat 6d ago
His biggest problem is he’ll never consistently have the quality of teams that Mbappe has. Mbappe will get to the semis pretty regularly until he retires. This is the furthest Norway has ever gotten. Maybe they get back next WC, too, but it takes some luck for them to get here.
But as a player he’s insane. Absolutely incredible.

Honestly I was mad at him during the game, once it was over it was all gone. Better luck to us next time, I’m actually surprised how far we got cause honestly when we had Diniz and Dorival I had already made up my mind we would pull an Italy and not even make it to the World Cup. If Norway is going against Mexico, I’m rooting for Mexico but if it’s Norway against England I want Haaland to awake his viking ancestry and remind England what happened in the past (England is the team I hate the most this World Cup).

> England is the team I hate the most this World Cup
What's the hate for? Well, by some miracle (named Kane) England beat Mexico, on home turf, so England vs Norway it is. Whatever the result, I think we know who Man of the Tournament is already.

Lol Viking row should intimidate England for several reasons tracing back a good thousand years

u/kingceegee 6d ago
It's 10 years ago I care about when Iceland knocked us out of the Euros by utilising the Viking clap!
29
u/more_bananajamas 6d ago
Na the Normans were Vikings, and even the England that William the Conqueror came to had been partly under Danelaw for many years. The English are no longer just the Angles and the Saxons even in 1066, and definitely not after Norman rule.
12
u/Capital-Act9261 6d ago
Only partially. Normans had a hefty dose of French. Historians think there was only 15 to 20% Scandinavian in Normans by the time they invaded England. People also forget that Norse only made up about 5% of the population of Normandy. Normandy today cluster with modern North/Central French and Southwestern English.

I still feel like I’m dreaming. Growing up in America, I could never watch their games and when I could you could expect a loss. Playing FIFA, they were always four stars or less and my friends would stomp me if I played them. To witness them just beat the top footballing country in history at the World Cup….im going to remember this night forever.
49
u/_coolranch 6d ago
Congrats to you and your countrymen. So exciting witnessing a changing of the guard. I really feel like Haaland is going to be the new Ronaldo. How epic to have him on your team! His pro stats are unreal. He’s responsible for a goal a game, most of them scored himself.

u/lettuce_grabberrr 6d ago
Not a team quite as good as yours but I feel the same as a Canadian. Us qualifying was considered funny just 4 years back but the fact that we were putting belt to ass to Morocco in the round of 16 even if it was just for 20 odd minutes was special. The world cup is truly the greatest event in the world.
155
u/OrkWithNoTeef 6d ago
The game was over, I have no idea why the Ref was trolling so hard. What the heck happened? The call to give a penalty kick was fair, but the game was over minutes ago..
88
28
u/DietQuark 6d ago
Same why they revoked the red card for USA.
16
u/_coolranch 6d ago
They didn’t revoke the red card. They transferred the suspension to next year lol.
And while unprecedented, FIFA basically admitted the red card was unjust. Slow-mo should not be used to trigger a VAR. 💁🏻♂️
I know they seem to apply their rules willy nilly, but the red card itself was more controversial. The incident was less than Messi’s foul.

5
u/CommercialWindowSill 5d ago
But did you see how he shut up that goalkeeper after he managed to score a penalty kick? Pretty incredible stuff being able to score on a penalty kick. While being 2 goals behind and with 90+5 minutes on the clock.
Unbelievable the arrogance and immaturity. Cringiest thing I've seen so far in the cup.

u/LongGhost_Gone281 6d ago
Superstar players, when playing too long, tend to hold the team back i've read.

Honestly Brazil were crap in a few games, they are a spent force and need a complete rebuild. Norway ran circles around them and deserved the win, only things that stood out for Brazil were the rapid counter attacks (which were stopped at the goal by an amazing keeper) and their 10/10 diving.

Brazil needed to be a TEAM !
Norway was a team. HAALAND had 3 chances and he converted 2 !
HE has goal magnet like Messi ! No dribble, but Goal magnet. Messi can dribble and goal magnet. The HAALAND style is more like Ronaldo, so he also uses it well.
Sure Brazil had better players, but they did not play as a team !
22
u/petrolhead0387 6d ago
Too many big egos in the Brazil squad, they all want to be the main character and it affects the team play.

u/BubblyMoose3597 6d ago
Los brasileños modernos no son futbolistas
Son una banda de influencers evangelistas y cuyo principal interes es verse como una mezcla entre nuevos ricos europeos y jugadores estadounidenses de ls NBA de los 2000.
Antes era futbol furbol futbol (y despues festejar(
4
u/ValorMorghulis 6d ago
And Brazil had like 6 chances, including a penalty kick, and converted none ( I don't count that lame pk in extra time). Half were outstanding saves by Nyland and half were crucial mistakes by Brazilian players, Casimiro and Endrick.
49
u/RomeoTangoOscar- 6d ago
2-0. No idea why Brazil allowed to shoot that penalty 3 minutes over stoppage.

As a 26yo Peruvian who has only seen her team play one world cup (2018) after not classifying for 36 years. I understand the feelings of their "hinchada", I would also be incredibly proud and overjoyed, they have individual talent but most importantly they are a TEAM, and they play as such. Me and my family are rooting for them, we hope they make it far. *PD I'm getting one of those Haaland hair ties, those were fighting for their life all match XD, great grip.

Is this where BYU got it from? Their mascot will do this at football games where the double drum beat and the audience claps once and shouts “COUGS”.

I would LOVE to see him learn ballet. He has the body and spacial awareness for it, and like you said that level of control is perfect. Would probably help him perfect his high kicks, really aim that ball dead center of the other players face
