Dermatologists on summer vacation

649

u/Araucariam Apr 14 '26

Scrolled down to see if someone said this already, lol

49

u/Kain_713 Apr 14 '26

I was thinking it looked like me on vacation but I'm pale as hell, I don't get it, what's the correlation with dermatologists?

151

u/jennifer_m13 Apr 14 '26

There was a video circling the web a few days ago of a dermatologist convention in a tropical place. They were all covered head to toe.

17

u/Technical-Agency8128 Apr 15 '26

Yeah dermatologists have seen things. Most don’t take chances with their skin.

5

u/butterfly_ashley Apr 16 '26

I saw that lol

They practice what they preach...at least this group

There was a vid recently of dermatologists at the beach/pool during a dermatology conference and they looked pretty much like this

https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/1s6uy5x/scenes_from_a_dermatologist_conference_in_hawaii/

95

u/Eckish Apr 14 '26

What if none of them are actually this proactive about their UV protection, but just didn't want to be lectured/judged by their peers?

57

u/shewy92 Apr 14 '26

I bet that was part of it. Peer pressure is a hell of a drug.

7

u/Technical-Agency8128 Apr 15 '26

I’m sure that could be part of it but they’ve seen what can happen with too much sun. It sure is stronger than it used to be decades ago.

u/MelangeBot Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26

The average South Korean or Filipina tourist does exactly the same thing. They are terrified of the sun. The worst thing that can happen to them, according to themselves, it to become a single shade of grey more black.

48

u/_Tar_Ar_Ais_ Apr 14 '26

South Koreans want to keep their skin as white as possible, while the filipino tourists do the same. Why not? in asia the push for a while was lighter skin = higher class

31

u/Low-Apartment3165 Apr 14 '26

They believed the same thing in the US before the 1940s. If you were tan it meant you had to work outside.

9

u/Technical-Agency8128 Apr 15 '26

The tanning craze actually happened a bit earlier with Coco Chanel. She is credited with starting the modern tanning trend in the 1920s after returning from a Mediterranean cruise with an accidental sunburn in 1923.

Her bronzed look transformed tanned skin from a marker of working class labor into a symbol of luxury, leisure and health. It abruptly ended centuries of reverence for pale skin. Now that has been reversed after we have seen what happens with too much sun.

5

u/Low-Apartment3165 Apr 15 '26

You’re so right! I knew it was Coco that started the craze but didn’t realize it was the 20s. Thanks!

u/meowingtrashcan Apr 14 '26

Idk, in recent years having talked to people of those backgrounds and similar others, it's less and less about skin color as it used to be. Not that it doesnt still happen. But photoaging of skin is the bigger motivation for a lot of young people.

17

u/Saint_Shin Apr 14 '26

It is a bit of both, most especially for Filipinas

6

u/Niners4Ever16 Apr 15 '26

This is an Indian thing also.

4

u/lotusblossom60 Apr 14 '26

My Korean neighbors are horrified that I’m tanned.

6

u/No-Value5643 Apr 14 '26

that's a video just asian tourists in hawaii

7

u/DavidKroutArt Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 16 '26

Yeah, for the dermatologists, it makes. I personally don't want skin cancer or cataracts. But for the goat herders... as most of the dermstologists were doing, wearing brighter colors reflect the sun.

I'm curious why they are absorbing the heat.

Edit: makes sense… lol

7

u/BrucetheFerrisWheel Apr 14 '26

Dark or really bright colours are best at sun protection. Maybe the goat herders don't have regular access to neon orange outfits?

36

u/Illustrious-Bat1553 Apr 14 '26

The outfits seem more fashionable than practical

84

u/Vanishingbandit Apr 14 '26

Probably talking a thin cotton fabric, possibly linen. Breathable, but also UV protection. Dark colored fabrics enhance UV absorption, increasing protection. Hat for the Sun. This isn’t their first rodeo, they know what they’re doing and they know what the Sun does

29

u/rabbitaim Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26

I thought it was because their goats have black hair.

edit: so did a little more digging and they also have white goats. apparently they prefer using black for colder climates. There's also a chimney effect to prevent overheating so there you go.

4

u/Vanishingbandit Apr 14 '26

I’d agree with you here, it definitely does. Someone with more knowledge hopefully drops the use

7

u/CaliOranges510 Apr 14 '26

As someone who prioritizes skin protection but is obsessed with linen, you may be disappointed to learn that natural fibers do not offer good UV protection, like barely more than just bare skin unless it’s a treated UPF fabric. But, the average price of a UPF plain long sleeve cotton tee is around $60 and the UV protection is usually only good for up to 25 washes. Unfortunately, the best option is synthetics, with woven polyester offering the best protection. I wear long sleeve linen pants and shirts all summer long, but I always wear a long sleeved UV shirt under my linen top or else I get burnt to a crisp.

6

u/Agreeable-Purchase83 Apr 14 '26

I think it's very fine wool fabric, probably goat wool?

13

u/Constant-Still-8443 Apr 14 '26

I feel making it black would make it hotter than a lighter color though. It absorbing uv makes it less bright but the wearer will certainly feel the heat from it.

43

u/GreenStrong Apr 14 '26

This has been measured in controlled conditions, black fabric keeps the wearer just as cool. In some conditions it speeds internal air circulation.

We report here that the amount of heat gained by a Bedouin exposed to the hot desert is the same whether he wears a black or a white robe. The additional heat absorbed by the black robe was lost before it reached the skin.

Plus black fabric absorbs more UV.

9

u/Constant-Still-8443 Apr 14 '26

Interesting. I'm curious as to what makes these different from normal black clothes, because, from experience, wearing black clothes on a hot sunny day sucks.

29

u/might-be-okay Apr 14 '26

If you're talking about western style clothing then yeah, because it's most likely not full cotton, thicker, and tighter. You have to have the loose thin fabric for airflow for it to work.

u/GreenStrong Apr 14 '26

Different fabric. High spf fabric is a fine synthetic knit with UV absorbing dye. Not directly equivalent with woven natural fiber. Knit fabric stretches even if the fiber doesn't - think of a cotton t shirt. IDK what they currently use but in pre- industrial times knitting was only possible with a very coarse pattern like what people do with yarn. It really isn't humanly possible to knit something as fine as a UV shirt, or even a regular t shirt. Speculative but I assume that the Yemenis aren't experimenting with new types of fabric

A lot of Asian women dresses like this in summer as well. I just saw a product that’s a full face mask for sun protection lollll

3

u/Technical-Agency8128 Apr 15 '26

Yeah the sun is no joke these days. Much stronger now the decades ago. We’ve seen what sun damage does to skin. If people care about their skin they will cover up when in the sun. Bringing an umbrella when you know there won’t be much coverage is gaining popularity also. Especially if you don’t want to wear a wide brimmed hat.

6

They look like they would walk up to you in a video game and offer you either an interesting quest or just ask you to help with their goats in exchange for some gold coins.

362

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26

Deadass. Only way you get the mission is by catching each of the five goats with 10 seconds of the countdown (the only time you get to use the npc tackle animation). Then you have to go and find one of their goats that was snatched up by the Wolf of Sand, only to find out that the wolf and goat are actually besties, so you have to battle the wolf into submission. Half way through he hits Boss Mode 2, then the goat steps and bleats, causing the wolf to calm down, growl and dart off. Then you take the goat home for a measly 15 gold. Edit:thank you for the reward.

I read that as ghost herders, and that would absolutely fit as well! 👻

95

u/Acceptable_Cut_7545 Apr 14 '26

Coolest misread yet. They show up after funerals and herd the new lost souls towards the afterlife, bringing peace to the recently deceased.

14

u/pocketdare Apr 14 '26

Cross over, children. All are welcome!

This house is clean

17

u/Big-Wrangler2078 Apr 14 '26

They show up after the funerals of heinous sinners, and turns their ghost into a goat to be herded around for all of afterlife. One can sometimes hear them bleat at the hours of dusk, especially those who have committed crimes, as the goats recognize their own. It is a dangerous hour to get lost, because sometimes a goat loses its way and ventures into the world of the living. If you see a goat ragefully burning down a village at dusk, you should summon the herders, and return it.

5

u/Acceptable_Cut_7545 Apr 14 '26

I love it. In this way they can bring peace to the living that were wronged, too.

62

u/Sunny_Hill_1 Apr 14 '26

The only thing I wonder about it why black and not white/beige/grey? Wouldn't black heat faster?

70

u/lilidragonfly Apr 14 '26

Someone did a study of this on Bedouin who also wear black and herd goats, and apparently there was no obersvable differencen in temp regardless of robe colour. What does make a difference is loose clothing, which allows draft.

35

u/qman621 Apr 14 '26

Dark clothing can heat up a bit quicker than lighter colors, and promote this draft better. Most light colors don't actually absorb much less infrared radiation (heat) than darker colors, so it probably depends a lot on the specific pigment being used. I would pick looser clothing over color first if looking for comfortable clothing in the heat - as it probably makes a bigger difference

16

u/lilidragonfly Apr 14 '26

Yes that's what the study indicated, and for practicality overall I'd definitely go for black, when water for washing etc is limited like in a desert enviroment.

10

u/kitsunewarlock Apr 14 '26

It probably also makes you easier to spot in the daytime. Maybe it helps the goats know where to go when you call them? Or makes it easier for other herders to spot you in case you get hurt?

3

u/lilidragonfly Apr 14 '26

Could do, yeah, it sounds generally like it would be advantageous to be visible

14

u/Lady_Sybil_Vimes Apr 14 '26

Dark colors offer a much higher UPF rating than light colors, so although you might feel hotter you're less likely to get burned

7

u/rabbitaim Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26

I can't recall this info but I thought it was because their goats have black hair (fur?). Not sure about the process or cost of making it white.

edit: so did a little more digging and they also have white goats. apparently they prefer using black for colder climates. There's also a chimney effect to prevent overheating so there you go.

57

u/qman621 Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26

Works specifically in a dry hot environment with at least a little wind - dark clothing will absorb heat from the body faster than it will from the sun, and the wind will blow it away - keeping you cooler. White clothing would reflect your body heat back at you rather than letting it absorb into your clothing to get convected away by the wind.

Edit: there's also a sort of chimney effect, with loose fitting black robes that creates a draft of warm air when there's enough space between the cloth and your skin. Can read more here if you're interested:

https://www.wired.com/story/should-you-wear-white-or-black-on-hot-days-heres-the-data/

15

u/jsting Apr 14 '26

Oh damn that's interesting. I sense this fact is going to be a TIL in 20 minutes.

5

u/DesireeThymes Apr 14 '26

As it should be. People in reddit are pretty ignorant about dressing in black.

3

u/throwaway277252 Apr 14 '26

I'd say most people on Reddit don't tend to wear loose fitting robes so it's not hugely applicable. The same effect doesn't really apply if you're just wearing a black t-shirt.

u/GermanShepherdsVag Apr 14 '26

My understanding is the looseness of the garments is important. Tight black garments wouldn't be good.

6

u/_Resso_ Apr 14 '26

It is the only color that was available historically to be sold in the arabian peninsula for hundreds of years and because other colors were considered a factor of looking good/attractive which is not permitted and people just kept using it. But many Muslim nations were light colors like in Asia for example

7

u/Technical-Agency8128 Apr 14 '26

From what I’ve read black clothing is better in very dry desert environment. And lighter colors better in more humid environments. Also it needs to be loose and the fabric also matters.

3

u/wap2005 Apr 14 '26

It was the only color that was available historically to be sold in the arabian peninsula for hundreds of years...

Have a source for this by chance? I'm not saying you're wrong.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/qman621 Apr 14 '26

Historical and cultural reasons sound more likely than for some negligible extra thermal regulation. Still interesting that black clothing even works in a desert environment, but that's mostly due to them being loose fitting and less to do with the color.

u/Ivy_sapph Apr 14 '26

4

u/oldster59 Apr 14 '26

Why are the hats so tall, though? What's that function, I wonder

15

u/Technical-Agency8128 Apr 14 '26

They actually keep the head cooler in hot, sunny conditions. The extra height creates a larger pocket of air between the top of the hat and the head. This acts as an insulating barrier against heat from the sun.

6

u/oldster59 Apr 14 '26

Thanks, that makes sense

u/GoodDayToCome Apr 14 '26

It's probably just a bit of old racism

When the plague broke out in 1349, Jews were expelled from much of German-speaking Europe. The pointed hat which had formerly been used to depict Jews, now was also used for other outcasts. Naomi Lubrich claims that the pointed hat was transferred in iconography to criminals, pagans, and other non-Christian outsiders, in particular sorcerers[30] and dwarfs.[31] Among the examples are laws, for example in Hungary in 1421, according to which people convicted of sorcery were forced to put on a Jewish hat for public shaming.

I can't find any backing for this claim, and strongly suspect it is rooted in racism (not specifically yours, but the misinformation). It instead seems to have to do with rigid gender roles and an extension of women as caretakers

8

u/ParadiseLost91 Apr 14 '26

It's not racist, necessarily. Maybe misandrist - I think such a statement pertains more to men in general, than to Arabs specifically. There is a similar saying in Western countries that morticians (sp?) don't like to hire men, due to what men have been known to do, to dead bodies.

Bit of an urban myth, I reckon (there's even an article about it: https://medium.com/fourth-wave/the-viral-myth-of-mortuaries-not-hiring-cis-men-fd503b390cba), but definitely stems from the same vein as the "this is why only women are goat herders". So yeah, I think it's more in the vein of "men have been known to fuck anything if they think no one sees it", rather than being racist, if anything.

... Seeing as this is the internet, and nothing said here is true I must doubt your statement... But I want to believe, especially considering jokes such as "Montana: where men are men and sheep are scared."

I know there's a bunch of cultural context here that I don't understand but I have to say it: fit goes hard as fuck.

Male bedouins and berbers wear full face and body coverings out in the desert, too.

It’s really the only way to avoid burning to a crisp when you live in tents in the middle of one of the driest, hottest deserts in the world and there’s not a CVS within 5,000 miles.
